Chapter 14 - My Void - Your Vessel

Kaito returned from the Eastern District, his body aching under the weight of the battle. The exhaustion was not just physical; he was anxious about the state of his new disciples and about Emma. He headed to his room, number 404, to rest. He sat on a wooden chair facing his door, contemplating his situation, saying: "It is not the monsters I must beware of here. That strange feeling that I am always being watched, that feeling that I am beginning to lose my strength, has never left me since I came to this world."

After a few moments, he heard the sound of a knock on the door, and a black letter with the seal of the Fourth Department slipped out from under the door, coming to rest beside his foot.

*"The Rooftop. Midnight. Don't be late... there are things that cannot wait, and you are one of them."*

The invitation was not a mere request; it was a command wrapped in the scent of Lilith's perfume. Kaito stood up, donning his long black coat, ignoring the recurring dizziness. He walked through the silent corridors of the headquarters, bypassing sensors, guards, and employees who seemed focused on their work, until he reached the elevator leading to the top of the main tower.

The elevator door opened to face the cold night air that struck his face with force. The rooftop was vast, exposed to a clear blue sky. The city below looked like a forest of dim lights, with many people walking in its alleys, laughing, indifferent to the dangers surrounding them.

Lilith stood right at the edge, with no railing to protect her. She wore a long black dress, and her hair fluttered in the wind in an organized chaos. She didn't turn when he approached, but her delicate voice cut through the silence:

"The city looks more beautiful from here, doesn't it? From above, the flaws vanish... and the scars. Everything looks like a beautiful painting, as long as you don't look deep."

Kaito stopped a few meters away, hands in his coat pockets, his purple eyes watching her shadow. "Beauty from above is just an illusion to escape the filth of reality. Why did you summon me, Lilith? I am in no mood for joking or pleasantries."

She turned slowly. The golden circles in her eyes glowed with a brilliance under the pale moonlight, to the extent that expressions of fascination at the beauty of her eyes were drawn on Kaito's face. She said to him: "Direct as usual. I like this clarity in you, even though you are drowning in secrets."

Lilith walked toward him with confident steps, stopping beside him as she looked at the city again. "I saw what happened in the Eastern District. The Whisperer was dangerous and powerful, but you crushed it in a way I've never seen before. I expected your victory; however, I also saw how you suffered while fighting it. Your nosebleed... are you dying, Kaito, aren't you?"

Kaito gave a dry, mocking laugh. "Death is the only thing I do not desire. If this world is trying to eject me, let it try. I belong to no one, and I don't accept being part of any system."

"The system is not boring; the system is safety," Lilith replied with sudden sharpness. "Laws are what prevent this city from turning into a mass grave. Humans are weak, Kaito. They need someone to tell them where to walk, how to breathe, and what to do. And you... you are the 'Variable' that threatens this balance. You are a hole in the fabric of the system; either we patch it... or we tear the whole fabric and get rid of it."

Kaito stepped closer, his face inches from hers. "You talk as if you are this law. But the truth is, you're afraid. Afraid that someone like me—unpredictable—will come and shatter your beliefs. The freedom I speak of isn't chaos; it's the refusal to be a pawn in a chess game owned by someone I can't see."

Lilith's eyes flashed. "And who said I am not a pawn as well? Everyone serves something. I serve stability, and you serve your ego. The difference between us is that I know my limits, while you think you are immune to falling; you think you are the Void."

"The Void doesn't protect me," Kaito whispered, leaning in closer until he felt the coldness of her body clashing with the heat of his own burning body. "I am the Void. I don't fall... I am the space in which the fall occurs."

A charged silence followed. The challenge between them was palpable. Lilith looked deep into his purple eyes, while Kaito saw in the gold of her eyes an ambition hiding a fear she hadn't yet realized existed.

"You always ask me about my intentions," Lilith said in a low voice, as if confessing a secret. "The truth is, I don't care about breaking you. I fear what happens if you break on your own. If your body collapses and the Void explodes inside you, there will be no city left for us to rule."

Kaito raised an eyebrow mockingly. "So that's the secret? This is your fear. Your fear that the Organization will lose its control over the city. You don't fear for the city; you fear that you won't find a city to rule."

"Defeat is the end of meaning," Lilith said, looking away. "I've seen lineages wiped out because they lost control. The Organization... 'The Oversight'... they are all watching you. They see an opportunity in you, but I see a delayed catastrophe."

"The Oversight," Kaito repeated the name slowly. "Who is he? Human? Or just another idea you created to justify your enslavement of people?"

Lilith smiled mysteriously and didn't answer directly. Instead, she walked toward a small table in the corner of the roof, with a bottle of water and two untouched glasses. "Correct questions don't always have comfortable answers. The Oversight is the mind that sees the world completely, while we only see the reflection."

Kaito stopped beside her, looking at the glass. "You speak in symbols because you don't possess the full truth. You are just a guard of a prison you think is a palace."

Lilith reached out and gently touched his coat; her touch was as cold as ice. "And yet, you are here in my prison... and you ask for my protection indirectly. Without the Organization, your new life would have had no meaning since the first day."

Kaito looked at her hand, then into her eyes. The distance between them had almost vanished. "I am not here to ask for protection. I am here to see how far this world can challenge my patience."

Lilith said with a challenging tone: "Perhaps this challenge is what keeps you alive. You love conflict, Kaito. You love being against everyone. But remember... even the Void needs a vessel to contain it, or it scatters and is lost, and I am that vessel."

Lilith suddenly stepped away, restoring the official distance between them. She regained her cold tone as the Organization's manager. "Enough talk. Tomorrow, the second stage of the trainee test begins. It won't be a normal field mission. You will go to 'Zone Zero'; you will train them there."

Kaito narrowed his eyes. "Zone Zero? The area even guards are forbidden to enter?"

"Yes," she answered, turning her back to him. "The Oversight has started taking a personal interest in you. He wants to see how you will deal with the new disciples."

Kaito turned to leave but stopped at the elevator door and said without looking back: "Tell your boss that I do not fear... for I was born from the womb of suffering."

The elevator doors closed, and Lilith remained alone on the rooftop, looking at the hand that had touched his coat, feeling a strange shiver that wasn't from the cold wind.
