Chapter 146 - What Victory Left Behind

Scene 146 — "The Brother Who Would Not Rise"

The black flame disappeared.

The valley fell silent.

The enormous wolf was gone.

Only a dark stain remained where its body had collapsed, surrounded by drifting ash.

The Traveler stood motionless.

His injured arm hung loosely at his side.

His breathing was uneven.

He looked down at his fingers.

Nothing.

No flame.

No explanation.

His vision blurred.

The world tilted slightly.

He took one step.

Then another.

The elder sister noticed.

"Traveler..."

He didn't answer.

His knees weakened.

She moved toward him.

The Traveler tried to remain standing.

His body refused.

He collapsed.

The elder sister caught him before his head struck the ground.

His weight nearly pulled her down with him.

She struggled, lowering him carefully onto the earth.

"Traveler."

No response.

His eyes were closed.

His breathing remained steady.

Alive.

The younger sister finally reached them.

She looked at the Traveler first.

Then—

her eyes moved past him.

Toward the road.

Toward the place where their brother had fallen.

She stopped.

The elder sister followed her gaze.

Neither moved.

Their brother lay exactly where the beast had thrown him.

His spear rested several feet away.

Broken.

The younger sister's lips parted.

"Brother..."

She ran.

The elder sister remained beside the unconscious Traveler for one second longer.

Then she followed.

They reached him together.

The younger sister dropped to her knees.

She touched his shoulder.

"Brother..."

Nothing.

She shook him.

Harder.

"Wake up."

Nothing.

The elder sister knelt beside them.

Her hand moved toward his face.

Stopped.

Then touched his cheek.

Cold.

Her expression changed.

She looked down.

The truth arrived without words.

The younger sister shook her head.

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"No..."

She pulled him against her.

The elder sister remained completely still.

She stared at the broken spear.

The weapon her brother had carried for years.

The weapon he had raised when the monster appeared.

The weapon he had used to stand between them and death.

Her fingers slowly closed around its broken shaft.

She lowered her head.

For several moments—

there was no crying.

No screaming.

Only silence.

The younger sister finally whispered,

"He told us to run."

The elder sister's eyes closed.

"He always did."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

She didn't wipe it away.

Behind them—

the Traveler remained unconscious.

The same stranger their brother had protected.

The same stranger who had ultimately killed the monster.

The same stranger who had been standing when their brother could no longer rise.

The elder sister looked back at him.

Her eyes were filled with grief.

But not hatred.

Not yet.

She looked down at her brother again.

Then quietly said,

"...You saved someone."

The younger sister looked at her.

The elder sister's voice trembled.

"Even at the end."

The wind passed through the ruined settlement.

Ash from the wolf drifted across the ground.

One black fragment landed beside the Traveler's hand.

For a moment—

it moved.

Barely.

As though trying to return to him.

Then it vanished.

Neither sister noticed.

The Traveler remained unconscious.

The mountain remained silent.

And somewhere beneath the silence—

something ancient had taken notice of what had just happened.
