Chapter 105 - The Cost of Standing

Scene 105 — "When the Mission Ended"

The Hunter stopped.

Broken.

Bleeding.

Barely standing.

The endless battlefield stretched around them in silence.

Fragments of shattered darkness drifted through the void.

Nothing moved.

Nothing breathed.

Nothing remained except the two figures facing one another.

The Traveler stood motionless.

Blood stained his cloak.

His breathing had become uneven.

Heavy.

Slow.

Each breath seemed to demand effort.

The Hunter felt it.

The weakness.

The exhaustion.

The limit.

Yet something deep within its ancient instincts continued screaming.

Not to attack.

Not to retreat.

To run.

An impossible instinct.

A foreign instinct.

The Hunter had crossed forgotten worlds.

Hunted things that erased kingdoms.

Walked roads abandoned by history.

It did not run.

Yet now—

its body trembled.

The Traveler slowly tilted his head.

A small movement.

Nothing more.

As though examining something unfamiliar.

As though trying to understand what stood before him.

Not an enemy.

Not prey.

Not a rival.

Simply a thing he had never seen before.

The Hunter's remaining hand tightened around its broken weapon.

The trembling worsened.

The Traveler took a step.

The Hunter attacked.

One final charge.

One final attempt.

One final mission.

The distance vanished.

Darkness exploded beneath the Hunter's feet.

The broken blade descended.

The battlefield shook.

Then—

everything stopped.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The Hunter's body froze.

The broken blade slipped from its fingers.

Its eyes widened.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

The creature looked downward.

A hand had pierced straight through its throat.

The Traveler stood directly before it.

Motionless.

Silent.

His arm buried deep within the Hunter's neck.

Dark blood dripped into the void.

Neither moved.

The battlefield seemed to forget how.

The Hunter's body began shaking.

Violently.

Its remaining tentacles twisted.

Convulsed.

Its claws opened and closed.

Searching for strength.

Searching for escape.

Finding neither.

The Traveler remained still.

Yet his own body had begun trembling.

Small tremors.

Subtle.

Barely noticeable.

The exhaustion had reached him.

The cost of the battle.

The cost of remaining standing.

The cost of surviving.

The Hunter tried to move.

Tried to strike.

Tried to complete the mission that had defined its existence.

Nothing obeyed.

The Traveler's fingers tightened.

The Hunter understood.

Too late.

Far too late.

Then—

the Traveler pulled.

A brutal motion.

Simple.

Effortless.

Final.

The Hunter's head tore free.

Dark blood scattered across the void.

The massive body staggered.

One step.

Then another.

Its remaining tentacles collapsed.

The severed head struck the fractured battlefield.

Silence followed.

The body remained standing for several moments.

An empty monument to a mission that had failed.

Then black fire appeared.

No spark.

No beginning.

One moment there was nothing.

The next—

darkness consumed darkness.

The Hunter's body began burning.

Slowly.

Quietly.

The flames produced no heat.

No smoke.

No sound.

The creature dissolved.

Piece by piece.

Ash replacing flesh.

Dust replacing bone.

Its ancient form crumbled into nothingness.

The severed head followed.

Then the blood.

Then the shadows.

Until nothing remained.

No corpse.

No remains.

No evidence that the Hunter had ever existed.

Only drifting ash.

Scattered endlessly across the void.

The mission had ended.

The hunter was gone.

Silence reclaimed the battlefield.

The Traveler stood alone.

His arm slowly lowered.

The dark-purple flicker within his eyes vanished completely.

Gone.

As though it had never existed.

The Traveler swayed.

Once.

Twice.

A breath escaped his mouth.

Long.

Heavy.

Exhausted.

The battlefield blurred.

The fractures in the void became distant.

Unclear.

His legs weakened.

The cost had finally arrived.

Not during the battle.

After it.

When there was nothing left to fight.

The Traveler took one final step.

Then another.

His body refused a third.

He collapsed.

The impact echoed softly across the shattered darkness.

No enemy remained.

No witness remained.

No road.

No village.

No answers.

Only silence.

The Traveler lay motionless upon the broken battlefield.

His white hair spread across the dark ground.

His eyes slowly closed.

The endless void watched.

Patiently.

Quietly.

As though waiting for something.

Then the darkness itself began to fade.

The shattered battlefield disappeared.

The fractures vanished.

The drifting ash dissolved.

Everything became distant.

Everything became quiet.

And the unconscious Traveler fell into a darkness deeper than sleep.

A darkness that felt strangely peaceful.

As though somewhere far away—

something beautiful was waiting.
