CHAPTER 28 — EINDHOVEN

The flight to Amsterdam took an hour and forty minutes.
Mikkel spent most of it reviewing the preparation document Astrid had compiled — thirty pages, tabbed and indexed, the kind of thing that would have taken him three days to produce alone and had taken the office two days with everyone contributing their piece. The wage comparables. The development trajectory. The pre-agreement clause analysis. The Euro 92 probability assessment, which Rasmus had contributed to with the careful language of someone who understood he was writing about something that hadn't happened yet.
He closed it at thirty thousand feet somewhere over the North Sea and looked out the window at the cloud cover and thought about the conversation he was about to have.
Ploegsma was good. Mikkel had assessed that clearly in their two previous conversations — a sporting director who prepared thoroughly, negotiated precisely, and didn't make emotional arguments when financial ones were available. The kind of opponent who made you better at the conversation because he was good at it himself.
The target was DKK 460,000. The floor was 430,000. Below that the flexibility clause became a live tool rather than a background threat. He'd told Laudrup. A shorter silence. *"That's a low threshold for an attacking player of his profile,"* Ploegsma said. Not an objection — an observation.
*"It reflects confidence in what he'll do,"* Mikkel said.
Ploegsma almost smiled. *"Fine. 445 base, bonus structure as proposed."*
They shook hands across the table. Van Dijk produced a formal letter of intent — prepared in advance, Mikkel noted, because Ploegsma had expected to reach an agreement today. He signed it, pocketed his copy, and shook hands again with both of them.

*"More than double,"* Mikkel said. *"Yes."*
Another silence, longer. When Laudrup spoke again there was something in his voice that he didn't usually allow — not quite emotion, but the adjacent thing, the feeling of something abstract becoming real.
*"PSV Eindhoven,"* he said.
*"PSV Eindhoven. July."*
*"And if we win in Sweden —"*
*"Then the bonus clause triggers and the conversation about what comes after PSV starts from a very different position than it would otherwise."*

In the Brøndby dressing room the announcement was processed with the resigned pragmatism of a squad that had now watched its two best players arranged for departure by the same agency.
