Chapter 9 - 9: The Ash and the Spark

The forest was thick and quiet. The tall trees acted like a shield, hiding Zero from the satellites in the sky. He walked until his legs burned, following a small stream that led deeper into the mountains.

The Old CabinBy noon, Zero found what he was looking for: a small wooden cabin hidden under a cliff. It was covered in green moss and looked like it hadn't been used in fifty years.

Inside, there was no electricity. There were no wires. It was the perfect place for a man who wanted to disappear.

The Survival KitZero dropped his bag on the dusty floor. He didn't check for Wi-Fi. Instead, he checked for:

A Wood Stove: To stay warm without a heater.

A Hand-Crank Radio: To listen for news from the city.

A Box of Candles: For light at night.

"I am back to the beginning," Zero said to himself. He opened his paper notebook. The ink was dry, but the secrets inside were still dangerous.

The Radio SignalAs the sun went down, Zero turned the handle on the small radio. The sound was fuzzy at first, then a voice came through the static.

"The hunt for the hacker known as Zero continues," the news reporter said. "The Cleaners have taken over the city police. They are offering a big reward for any information."

Zero turned the radio off. He wasn't surprised. He knew they wouldn't stop. But then, he heard something else—a low humming sound coming from outside the cabin.

The Metal BeeZero looked out the window. A small, black drone with a red light was hovering just above the trees. It was a "Seeker" drone, designed to find body heat.

"They didn't use the grid," Zero realized. "They used the sky."

The Move: Zero grabbed his notebook and a heavy wool blanket.

The Trick: He lit a single candle and placed it in the middle of the room.

The Exit: He crawled out of a small back window and hid under the thick roots of a fallen tree.

The ExplosionThe drone stopped moving. It saw the heat from the candle through the window. It thought it had found Zero.

A second later, a loud BOOM shook the ground. A missile from a high-altitude jet hit the cabin. The wood turned into a ball of orange fire. The Archive of paper was gone.

Zero watched from the shadows. He didn't cry. He didn't scream. He waited until the drone flew away, thinking he was dead.

"You burned the book," Zero whispered, reaching into his boot. He pulled out a tiny, silver USB drive he had hidden there. "But you forgot that I always keep a backup."

The fire was bright, but the forest was dark again. Zero turned his back on the flames and started to climb higher into the mountains.
