Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: First Lecture, Late Nights

Talia stepped into the lecture hall, backpack snug over one shoulder. Sunlight spilled through the tall windows, catching dust motes that danced like tiny city stars. The room buzzed with low chatter — students exchanging syllabi, debating dorm parties, and sizing up each other like cattle at a new pasture.

She had settled her school requirements, thanks to her parents covering tuition, and now she was free to focus on the life she wanted. Classes, assignments, late-night walks through New York streets… and a part-time job at a small Italian restaurant that needed extra hands after dinner rushes. Cash for herself. Independence. Freedom.

The professor entered, tall and imposing, glasses catching the light like a warning.

"Welcome to Intro to Molecular Biology," he said, voice smooth but firm. "I hope you all are prepared to question what you thought you knew."

Talia slid into a seat near the window, notebook open, but her attention kept wandering. Outside, the city moved in endless streams of honking cars, neon, and the low hum of life. For the first time in a long while, she felt small and limitless all at once.

A hand tapped her shoulder.

"Mind if I sit here?"

She looked up. Stella, her roommate, grinning like she already owned the world.

"Of course not," Talia said.

"Hope you're ready for a lecture that might actually murder your brain cells," Stella joked, dropping her bag onto the floor.

They laughed, and Talia realized she hadn't laughed like that in weeks. Not since high school drama, not since the gossip, not since… everything.

After class, Talia walked down the streets lined with coffee shops, bookstores, and food trucks, thinking about her new schedule. College wasn't just about lectures; it was about balancing life.

She had to fit in her part-time job, pay rent for dorm extras, and maybe… survive social life.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Stella: Meet me at "Luna's" tonight? First night we're free. Drinks, chaos, new friends.

Talia smiled.

"Why not?" she whispered to herself. "City lights, new faces… maybe this is really a new chapter."

And for the first time since arriving, she believed it.
