Chapter 4 - Ignite the Spark - 3

The hallway was suffocatingly quiet, the only sound the rhythmic, taunting clink-clink of the silver lighter in Chloe's hand. She stepped into my personal space, the cloying, artificial scent of her strawberry perfume gagging me. It was the smell of someone who had everything handed to her, clashing violently with the sterile, cold air of the school.

"Let's see how much of a genius you are when your lucky charm is gone, you pathetic little freak," Chloe snapped. Her manicured fingers dug into the rough wool of my sleeve, pulling me toward her.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but for the first time in years, the fear didn't paralyze me. For years, I had been the "Ghost Girl"—the invisible shadow who stayed silent to survive Uncle Levi's drunken rages at home and Chloe's petty tyranny at school. But as Chloe's hand tightened around the frayed pink ribbon—the one I had untied from my mother's childhood bear before her heartbeat stopped forever—something inside me finally snapped. It wasn't just anger; it was a goddamn explosion.

"Let. Go." I said. My voice wasn't a whisper. It was a blade, cold and sharp enough to draw blood.

Chloe blinked, her mouth falling open in a stupid, confused pout. "What the hell did you just say to me?"

"I said, get your hands off me, Chloe," I repeated, stepping forward until our chests almost touched. I didn't pull away this time. I stood my ground. "Keep your expensive sneakers. Keep your shitty strawberry spray. But touch this ribbon again, and I'll make sure the principal sees exactly what a miserable bully you are when the teachers aren't looking. I have the perfect grades, the clean record, and the discipline. You're just a spoiled brat with a lighter and a loud mouth. Who do you think they'll believe?"

Chloe's grip loosened. I could see the flicker of doubt in her eyes. Behind her, Emily and Sophie exchanged nervous, wide-eyed glances. They weren't used to the "Ghost" having a pulse, let alone a voice.

"You're nothing," Chloe hissed, her face contorting. "You're just a charity case living in a dusty, depressing kitchen. You'll always be the girl with the dead parents and the trashy clothes."

"Maybe," I said, my hand resting protectively over the silk ribbon. "But I'm a charity case with a perfect score in Advanced Biology and a future that's actually going somewhere. While you're wasting your life being a bitch in high school hallways, I'm building a world you'll never be smart enough to even visit. You aren't worth my fear anymore."

I turned my back on them and walked away, my head held higher than it had been since the night of the crash. I didn't need to look back to know Chloe's face was turning a deep, humiliated red. She was vibrating with pure, toxic jealousy—not because of some boy, but because she finally realized she was powerless against me.

The spark had been ignited. I wasn't a ghost anymore. I was a goddamn flame, and I was going to burn everything down.
