She Collects Empires The notebook had six questions in it by Friday.
Amara had written them over three nights, the way thoughts arrive when you are trying to sleep and are not succeeding, one at a time, each one leading to the next the way a pulled thread leads to the one beneath it. She had written them in the small careful handwriting she used when she was being precise about something.
Who was the Benefactor?
Why me specifically?
Is anyone else receiving these missions or is it only one person at a time?
What happens when it is finished? Is there an end to it?
Does it want something from me that it has not said yet?
And the last one, which she had written at two in the morning on Thursday and which felt the most honest of all of them.
Should I be frightened?
The voice had not come since Tuesday night. She had gone to bed each evening expecting it and woken each morning in the particular silence of its absence, which was not frightening, just present. Like the space where something usually is. She was starting to understand that the voice came when it had something to say and not otherwise, which was a quality she respected in people and apparently also in ancient systems living in her head.
She put the notebook in her bag on Friday morning because she had decided to go and see the property.
Mr. Chanda had given her the address and the contact number for the property management agent, a woman named Mrs. Zulu who handled the rental arrangements and the maintenance and the relationship with the tenants. She had called Mrs. Zulu on Thursday and explained who she was, which Mrs. Zulu had taken in her stride in the way that property agents apparently took most things, and they had arranged to meet at the house at ten on Friday morning, when the tenants, a family named Mwale, would be at work and school.
She told her mother where she was going over breakfast.
Margaret looked up from her tea. "You are going to see the house."
"I want to know what I have," Amara said. "I cannot make decisions about it from a letter."
"That is sensible." Her mother wrapped both hands around her mug. "What will you decide?"
"I do not know yet. That is why I am going."
"Will you keep the tenants?"
"They have been there four years and they pay on time. I am not going to move a family out of their home because I suddenly own the building."
Margaret nodded slowly, the nod she did when she had already thought about something and was satisfied that the other person had thought about it the right way. "Good," she said. "That is the right answer."
Siya appeared in the kitchen doorway in her school uniform with one sock on and the other in her hand, which was her standard Friday morning presentation. She looked at both of them. "What is the right answer?"
"Nothing for you to worry about," Margaret said.
Siya considered this. "If it is the right answer I would like to know it in case I need it later."
"Siya," Amara said, "put your sock on."
Siya looked at the sock in her hand as though she had forgotten it was there. Then she sat down on the kitchen floor and put it on. "Where are you going?" she asked, looking up at Amara. "You are wearing the good shoes."
Amara looked down at her shoes. She had not consciously chosen them for the occasion but she had chosen them, which meant something about how she felt about the occasion whether she had admitted it to herself or not. "I am going to look at a property," she said.
Siya finished with the sock and stood up. "The house from the old woman?"
"Ruth. Yes."
"Can I come?"
"You have school."
"After school."
"Maybe another time."
Siya looked at her with the slow blink. "I want to see it," she said. "She left it to you and that means it is part of us now. I want to see where we come from." She said it the way she said all things, with a simplicity that made the logic feel so obvious it was almost embarrassing that you had needed her to say it.
Amara looked at her small sister standing in the kitchen in her school uniform with both socks on now and the absolute certainty of a child who had not yet learned to make herself smaller for the benefit of the room.
"After school," she said. "I will take you on the weekend."
Siya appeared satisfied. She picked up her school bag and went to find Gabriel.
The house was on a quiet road in Kabulonga, set back behind a low white wall with a metal gate that had been painted recently enough that it was still the right colour. There was a garden that someone had been maintaining with genuine care, not just the minimum, and a jacaranda tree in the front corner that was old enough to have opinions about the neighbourhood. The house itself was two bedrooms, single storey, with a covered veranda along the front and windows that were large and faced east, which meant the mornings would be good.
Amara stood at the gate for a moment before Mrs. Zulu arrived.
It was a solid house. That was the first thing she thought. Not grand, not showy, but built with the intention of lasting. The walls were thick and the roof was good and the garden said that somebody had lived here in a way that meant something to them even from a distance, even through a management agent, even for thirty years. Ruth Akapelwa had owned a house she had not lived in for three decades and she had made sure it was looked after as though she might come back to it.
Mrs. Zulu arrived at five past ten in a small white car and shook Amara's hand with the efficiency of a woman who had a full morning and was going to get through it on schedule. She was perhaps forty, with short natural hair and the kind of composed energy that came from spending years managing things that did not always cooperate.
"Miss Daka," she said. "Welcome. I have the keys. The family is not home today, a Friday is normally easiest. Shall we go in?"
They went in.
The inside of the house was the inside of another family's life, which was a strange thing to walk through. The Mwales had lived there four years and the house showed it in the way lived-in houses do, the height marks penciled on the door of the second bedroom where children had been measured, the hook by the front door with three coats and a school bag hanging from it, the kitchen with its specific arrangement of things on the counter that belonged to someone's particular way of doing things. There was a plant on the kitchen windowsill that was doing well, and a child's drawing on the fridge held up with two magnets, and a calendar on the wall with things written on it in different handwriting.
Amara walked through carefully, not touching anything, feeling the strange double quality of the space. This was somebody's home. It was also, on paper, hers.
Mrs. Zulu walked her through the condition of each room in the matter-of-fact language of her profession. The roof had been repaired two years ago and was in good condition. The plumbing was sound. The electrical had been updated before the Mwales moved in. The garden maintenance was included in the property management contract. The Mwales had a lease that ran until October, which gave Amara eight months before any decision about the arrangement needed to be made.
"They are good tenants," Mrs. Zulu said, in a tone that communicated she had managed enough tenants to know this was not guaranteed. "They maintain the space well. The children are young but they are careful." She paused. "Mrs. Mwale called me when she heard a new owner had inherited. She was worried."
"About what?"
"About whether they would be asked to leave."
Amara looked at the child's drawing on the fridge. It was a house, drawn with the cheerful inaccuracy of a young child, with four windows all the same size and a sun in the corner that was also the same size as the windows. "Tell her they will not be asked to leave," she said. "When the lease comes up in October, if they want to renew, they can renew."
Mrs. Zulu looked at her with a brief assessment that was not unfriendly. "I will tell her," she said. "She will be relieved."
They went back out to the veranda and stood in the morning sun for a moment. Down the road a dog was barking at something it had decided was its business, and the jacaranda tree was doing nothing in particular but doing it beautifully.
"The rental income," Amara said. "Once it transfers to me directly. What is the payment schedule?"
"Quarterly. The Mwales pay on the first of the month and we release to the owner at the end of each quarter after management fees. Three thousand two hundred dollars, as per the current lease agreement."
She had already known this number. She had known it since Tuesday night when the voice had told her, calm and precise, and she had been too tired to feel it properly. Standing here now, on the veranda of a house that had been maintained for thirty years by a woman who kept orchids and took the long way, the number became real in a way that numbers on a page cannot quite manage.
Three thousand two hundred dollars, four times a year.
She thought about her two jobs. She thought about the supermarket shift that ended at midnight and the tutoring in the afternoons and the thirty-four minute walk home and the way tired had stopped feeling temporary.
She thought about what it would mean to have this, steady and certain, three times more than she currently earned in a month and arriving without her having to stand anywhere for it or smile at anyone or count down the hours until she could leave.
She kept her face exactly as it was.
"Thank you," she said to Mrs. Zulu. "I will be in touch about the formal transfer once the estate paperwork is finalised with Banda and Associates."
Mrs. Zulu shook her hand again and drove away in her small white car. Amara stood at the gate for a while longer. She was not sure what she was waiting for. The jacaranda tree continued to have no opinion about her situation. The dog down the road had resolved whatever issue it had been having and gone quiet.
She took the notebook out of her bag and wrote one more line under the six questions.
She took care of this house for thirty years from another country.
She looked at the line. It was not a question. She was not sure what category it was. She put the notebook away and walked to the bus stop.
She was quiet at lunch, which her mother noticed.
They ate together at the kitchen table, just the two of them, with the radio on low in the background doing what midday radio does, which is fill silence without asking anything of you. Margaret had made nshima and the leftover chicken from the good-plates dinner and a tomato relish from two of the three surviving garden tomatoes, which she mentioned with the quiet satisfaction of someone whose small victory had produced an actual result.
"How was the house?" her mother asked.
"Good," Amara said. "Solid. Well maintained. The tenants have made it a home."
"Is there a garden?"
"Yes. Someone cares about it. There is a jacaranda in the front that is probably older than I am."
Her mother made a sound of appreciation. She had feelings about trees, Margaret, that went beyond decoration. She had grown up somewhere with a large shade tree in the yard and spoke of it occasionally the way people speak of something they did not know they were going to miss until it was gone.
"I told Mrs. Zulu to let the tenants know they are not being asked to leave," Amara said.
"Good."
"There are children. One of them has been drawing houses and putting them on the fridge."
Her mother looked at her. "That sounds like it meant something to you."
Amara turned a piece of chicken over with her fork. "Ruth maintained that house for thirty years from Cape Town," she said. "She never came back to live in it. She never sold it. She just made sure someone was taking care of it." She paused. "I think she always intended to leave it to someone. I think she was waiting to find out who."
Margaret was quiet for a moment. She ate a small piece of nshima. Then: "She found out."
"Apparently."
"And she was right."
Amara looked up.
Her mother's expression was the one she had when she was saying something she meant completely and did not need to elaborate on. "She was right to choose you," she said. "You are keeping the tenants and their children and their drawings on the fridge. That is the right answer again." She went back to her food. "Ruth Akapelwa knew what she was doing."
Amara did not say anything for a moment.
"Mama," she said. "The rental income from that house is three thousand two hundred dollars a quarter."
Her mother's fork stopped moving.
"That is on top of what the estate account already has," Amara said. "Twelve thousand eight hundred a year, just from the house, just ongoing. Before anything else."
The kitchen was very quiet except for the radio saying something cheerful about the weather.
Margaret put her fork down. She looked at her plate. She looked at the window, at the remaining tomato plant doing its best in the afternoon sun. Then she looked at her daughter.
"Amara," she said, very carefully.
"I know."
"That is."
"I know, Mama."
Her mother pressed her lips together. Amara watched her go through it, the arithmetic of it, the weight of it shifting and resettling. Margaret Daka had spent twenty years managing impossibilities with the precision of someone who could not afford a single miscalculation. She knew exactly what twelve thousand eight hundred dollars a year meant in a household like theirs. She did not need it explained.
"You are going to leave the supermarket," her mother said. Not accusatory. Just arriving at the conclusion that the numbers made unavoidable.
"Not immediately," Amara said. "I want to be careful. I do not want to change everything at once and then have something go wrong and have nothing to fall back on."
Her mother studied her. "That is cautious."
"I am always cautious."
"You are," her mother agreed. Then quietly: "You do not have to be as cautious as you have had to be. That is what I want you to understand. You are allowed to put some things down."
The radio moved into a song Amara half recognised from a long time ago. She looked at her mother and thought about Ruth taking the long way and wishing she had not, and about what it cost a person to carry things they did not have to carry simply because they had been carrying them for so long they had stopped noticing the weight.
She nodded slowly. "I hear you," she said.
"Good." Her mother picked her fork back up. "Eat. The tomatoes are from the garden and I would like you to acknowledge that."
"They are excellent tomatoes, Mama."
"Yes," Margaret said, with great dignity. "They are."
She was in her room that evening, going through the Banda and Associates documents again and making notes in the margin in pencil, when the voice came. Not at the edge of sleep this time. She was fully awake, sitting cross-legged on the bed with the papers around her, and it arrived with the same calm certainty it always did, as though the hour were irrelevant to it.
"You went to the house," it said.
"Yes," she said. She had stopped being startled by it. She was not sure when that had happened.
"What did you think?"
She considered the question. The voice had not asked her what she thought before. It had informed and instructed and occasionally said something that was almost dry humour, but it had not asked. "I thought it was solid," she said. "I thought Ruth cared about it. I thought it was strange to walk through someone else's home and know it is technically yours and feel like the guest."
"That is an honest answer."
"You asked an honest question."
A pause. "The next mission," the voice said, "is not a large one. It is not about money. It is about a decision you are already close to making."
She waited.
"There is a woman named Grace Mulenga. She works the afternoon shift at your supermarket. You know her slightly, not well. She is supporting her mother and two nephews on that wage. Her younger nephew has a scholarship interview at a private school next week but she cannot afford the transport to get him there and she has not told anyone because she does not know who to tell."
Amara was quiet.
"You will see her on Monday," the voice said. "That is all the mission requires. See her. Talk to her. You will know what to say."
"How do I bring it up?"
"She will tell you herself if you ask the right question. You are good at asking the right question. You do it for your brother." A brief pause. "This does not require cleverness. Just attention."
She wrote Grace Mulenga in the notebook. She underlined it once.
"Your questions," the voice said. "From the notebook."
She looked up from the page.
"I will answer one tonight because you have earned one today. You went to the house, you made the right decision about the tenants, you had an honest conversation with your mother. You are handling this well and I want you to know that is not nothing." Another pause. "Which question do you want answered?"
She looked at the six questions on the page. She read through them. She already knew which one she was going to ask because it was the one she had written at two in the morning and it was the one that sat differently from the others, heavier, more personal.
"Should I be frightened?" she said.
The silence lasted long enough that she wondered if it would answer.
"No," the voice said finally. "Not of this. Not of me. Not of what is coming." A stillness in it that felt different from its usual precision, something more careful. "There will be moments that are difficult. There will be things asked of you that cost you something real. But frightened is not the right word for any of it." Another pause. "The right word is ready."
She looked at the question in the notebook.
"Are you ready?" the voice asked.
She thought about the lottery ticket. About Ruth's letter. About the child's drawing on the fridge. About her mother's shoulders coming down a fraction when she said it is good news.
"I think so," she said.
"Good enough," the voice said. And then it was gone, and the room was the room again, and outside the window the Lusaka night was doing what it always did, which was proceed without asking her permission.
She uncapped her pen. She crossed out Should I be frightened?
She wrote one word beneath it.
Ready.
She put the notebook down and went back to the documents and the pencil notes in the margins, and the night moved around her, quiet and full and entirely hers.
