Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Sanctuary of Ash

The abandoned warehouse at the edge of the industrial district smelled of rust and stagnant rain, a hollow cathedral for two souls who had officially died to the world. Xuan dragged a moth-eaten mattress into the center of the floor, his movements frantic and fueled by an extreme level of possessiveness. He stripped the sodden, ruined hospital gown from Ning's shivering frame, his hands shaking not from the cold, but from the terrifying realization of how close the river had come to stealing her. "They'll be searching the banks by dawn," he rasped, his voice a jagged edge of paranoia. "Wei Chen will have his divers out there, looking for a trophy to bury." The misunderstanding of their "death" was their only shield, yet Xuan's jealousy remained a living, breathing thing in the dark. He wrapped her in his own damp jacket, pulling her against his chest so tightly she could feel the frantic, uneven gallop of his heart. Ning didn't pull away; she leaned into the crushing grip, her extreme level of lovingness turning her into a shadow of his every move. "Let them search," she whispered, her voice a ghostly thread. "Let them cry over the silt and the weeds. I am here, Xuan. I am only here." She reached up, her fingers tracing the raw 'X' he had carved into his shoulder, her touch a mix of reverence and madness. The misery of their survival was a heavy cloak, but in the silence of the warehouse, they were finally free from the debt of the living.
