Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 – The Silent Rebuilding

The war was over, but the city was broken. Kasim walked through the streets, seeing walls half‑fallen, roofs burned, and doors hanging loose. The smell of smoke still lingered, mixed with the sharp scent of wet stone after rain.

Children played near the fountain, though the water was muddy. Their laughter was thin, but it was laughter all the same. Kasim stopped to watch. For a moment, he felt hope.

Arjun joined him, leaning on his staff. "The people are trying," he said. "That is how cities live again."

Kasim nodded. "But they look to me. I don't know if I can give them what they need."

Arjun's voice was steady. "You don't need to give them everything. Just give them courage. The rest they will build themselves."

The Work of Hands

Days turned into weeks. Men carried stones to rebuild walls. Women patched roofs with cloth and wood. Children fetched water and food.

Kasim worked beside them. He lifted beams, hauled rubble, and helped mend broken carts. His hands blistered, his back ached, but he did not stop.

One old man laughed as Kasim struggled with a heavy stone. "You fight like a lion, but you carry like a mule," he said.

Kasim smiled, breathless. "Then I'll be both."

The people laughed with him. It was small, but it mattered.

The Shard's Quiet

At night, Kasim sat alone with the shard. Its glow was softer now, no longer burning, no longer whispering of fire.

He touched it gently. "You've shown me war. Show me peace."

The shard pulsed faintly, like a calm heartbeat. Kasim closed his eyes. He saw not flames, but faces — the people of Lumora, working, laughing, living.

He whispered, "Then peace is your memory too."

The Council Returns

The nobles gathered again, fewer than before. Their robes were plain, their voices quieter.

Lady Seren spoke. "The people follow you, Kasim. They call you bearer, leader, even king."

Kasim shook his head. "I am none of those. I am only Kasim."

Lord Verrin frowned. "But without a crown, there is no order."

Arjun stepped forward. "Order is not in crowns. It is in trust. And trust is already here."

The hall fell silent. For once, no one argued.

The Silent Night

That evening, Kasim walked the rebuilt streets. Torches flickered, casting warm light on fresh stone. He heard voices — not shouts of war, but songs.

A woman sang softly as she baked bread. A boy hummed while carrying water. The city was alive again, not with power, but with peace.

Kasim held the shard close. Its glow matched the torchlight, steady and calm.

He whispered, "Lumora stands."
