Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Saintess's Sin

The North Tower was a hollow shell at this hour. The wind howled through the arrow-slits, sounding like the ghosts of executed traitors. I led Elara into the "Black Archive," a room sealed by heavy lead doors and ignored by the faculty because it contained only the records of failed students.

"Kaelen," Elara whispered, her hand glowing with a faint light to ward off the oppressive darkness. "We shouldn't be here. If the guards find us—"

"The guards are busy hunting a 'Demon Cultist' that doesn't exist," I said, turning to face her. I didn't hide my presence this time. I let the False Aura Mask slip just an inch.

The air in the room suddenly felt heavy. Elara's light flickered, turning a sickly pale green. She gasped, stumbling back as she felt the sheer, cold pressure of my mana. It wasn't the mana of a Rank F commoner. It was the mana of someone who had stood at the gates of the abyss and walked back.

"You... you're a monster," she breathed, her eyes wide with a mixture of horror and awe.

"I am a necessity," I replied, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "You saw the signature of the Void Sovereign in the infirmary, Elara. You're right. I carry the Void. But ask yourself—why would a 'demon' save the Prince from his own Berserker Elixir?"

Elara froze. "Save him? You crippled him!"

"I sealed him," I corrected, stepping closer until her golden light touched my chest. "The elixir he took was tainted. If he had finished that duel, his heart would have exploded from the strain. I used the Void to absorb the excess energy. I didn't steal his power; I saved his life. At the cost of making him look like a failure."

[Notice: 'Eye of the Abyss' is analyzing...]

[Detection: Elara's Intent is shifting. 'White' (Confusion) is turning into 'Deep Blue' (Internal Conflict).]

I was lying, of course. I had sealed him to ruin him. But by framing it as a "sacrifice" to save his life, I was giving Elara a narrative she could stomach.

"But why keep it a secret?" she asked, her voice trembling. "If you're a hero, why hide?"

"Look at this Academy, Elara," I gestured to the dark hallways outside. "Valerius is a traitor. The Empire is rotting from the inside. If I revealed my strength, the Emperor wouldn't thank me. He would chain me. He would use me as a weapon, just like he uses you."

I reached out, my gloved hand gently lifting her chin. Her skin was cold.

"You want to save people, Elara. You want to be the Saintess the world needs. But the Church and the Throne only want a puppet. Stay with me. Keep my secret, and I will show you what it really means to heal a broken world."

[Alert! The 'Vow of Silence' is being offered.]

[Context: This is a turning point. If she accepts, she becomes your 'Secret Informant'.]

Elara looked into my eyes. She didn't see the commoner Kaelen. She saw something ancient and terrifying. She saw the "Void" I had shown her—a darkness that felt more honest than the "Light" she had been raised with.

She closed her eyes, a single tear trailing down her cheek. "If the Heavens find out... I'll be burned as a heretic."

"Then we'll burn the Heavens together," I said.

[Notice: Relationship Advanced! Elara the Saintess-candidate has become: 'The Reluctant Accomplice'.]

[Reward: 2,000 Karma Points!]

[Bonus: 'Saintess's Blessing' (Passive) — Your mana regeneration is increased by 50% when Elara is within 100 meters.]

She didn't say anything else. She just nodded, her light fading to a soft, warm amber. She turned and hurried out of the archive, her footsteps quick and frantic. She had committed her first sin. She had lied for a "monster."

I leaned against a stack of rotting scrolls, exhaling a breath I didn't know I was holding.

[Current Karma Balance: 2,500 KP]

"That was a close one," I muttered.

But I didn't have time to celebrate. The Zenith Tournament qualifiers were tomorrow, and Julian von Krest was planning something much worse than a simple duel.

I pulled the Raven's Talon hilt from my belt. The black dragon-hide felt warm in my hand.

"Julian wants a show," I whispered to the shadows. "Let's give him one he'll never forget."
