Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Spider’s Invitation

The shadow of the library's stone arches felt colder than usual. I leaned against a pillar, my lungs still burning from the "performance" I had put on in the arena.

I didn't turn around. I didn't need to. In the corner of my vision, a faint, pulsing purple haze appeared. It was the color of ambition mixed with a sharp, jagged streak of murderous intent.

"You're quite the actor, Kaelen Voss," a melodic, silk-thin voice drifted through the corridor.

Lady Seraphina stepped out from behind a statue of the First King. She was stunning—a porcelain face framed by midnight-black hair—but to my new eyes, she was surrounded by a swirling storm of dark intent.

"I don't know what you're talking about, My Lady," I said, keeping my voice flat. "I just got lucky. The machine's core was old."

Seraphina let out a soft, mocking laugh. She walked toward me, her silk dress rustling against the stone. She stopped just inches away, looking up at me.

"I saw the screw, Kaelen. I saw the way your fingers moved when you 'stumbled.' You didn't trip. You performed a perfect internal disruption strike while pretending to fall like a drunk."

She leaned in closer, her scent of lilies and expensive perfume filling the air. "The question is... why? Why would a commoner with the skills of a high-tier assassin want the world to think he's a lucky clown?"

I used [Eye of the Abyss].

Her intent wasn't hostile—not yet. It was green. [Curiosity]. And underneath it, a flicker of red. [Opportunity].

"Maybe I just don't like the spotlight," I replied, finally looking her in the eye. "Unlike your fiancé, the Prince. He seems to live for it."

The mention of Marcus made her intent spike. The purple haze of ambition turned into a deep, bruised black. [Hatred].

"He isn't my fiancé by choice," she whispered, her eyes narrowing. "He is a golden cage that is slowly closing around my family's throat."

[Alert! Secret Dialogue Unlocked.]

[Fate Branch: You have touched upon the 'Spider Queen's' True Goal.]

I smiled. This was the moment. In my past life, Seraphina had been Marcus's most loyal tool—until she poisoned him on their wedding night and was executed for it. She had failed because she acted alone.

"You want him gone," I said plainly.

Seraphina froze. The "Intent" around her turned a violent, jagged white. [Shock]. She reached into her sleeve, her fingers closing around a hidden needle coated in manticore venom.

"Careful, My Lady," I said, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous octave. "I can see the needle. And I can see the fear in your heart. You want to kill the Prince, but you know you'll die doing it."

I stepped closer, closing the gap she had tried to create.

"I don't want to expose you, Seraphina. I want to help you. Marcus is my enemy too. But if you try to strike him now, you'll lose. He's stronger than you think."

The white haze of shock faded, replaced by a slow, burning orange. [Interest].

"Help me?" she breathed. "A commoner with no rank and a 'broken' automaton to his name?"

"I have something Marcus doesn't," I said, turning to walk away. "I know how his story ends. And I'm the only one who can rewrite it."

I didn't wait for her answer. I knew she'd come find me again. She was a spider, after all, and I had just handed her a much stronger thread.
