Chapter 25 - Episode 25: The King’s Shadow

As the night deepened, the atmosphere in the room changed. The raw grief had turned into a quiet, fragile peace. Alaric refused to leave Silas's side, but he was no longer demanding. They sat by the fireplace, the orange flames casting long shadows across the stone walls. Alaric sat with his back against the wall, his hand resting near Silas's, waiting for permission before making any move.

"My father is the one who taught me to be a demon," Alaric said suddenly, his voice low. "He told me that Alphas do not love; they own. He told me that if a wolf cannot lead, he should be put down. I spent thirty years trying to please a man who has no heart. I thought that by capturing you, I was proving my strength to him."

Silas looked at the Prince's profile. "You were proving his strength, Alaric. Not yours. Real strength is what you did tonight. Real strength is being man enough to cry and let go."

Alaric looked at Silas, a small, tired smile appearing on his lips. "If that is true, then you are the strongest person I have ever met. You survived me."

The peaceful moment was shattered by a violent pounding on the heavy chamber door. The sound echoed like a drum of war. Alaric stood up instantly, his entire body shifting from a grieving lover to a lethal warrior. He stepped in front of Silas, shielding him completely.

"My Prince!" a guard shouted from the hallway. "The King has arrived! He is at the main gates with his personal guard. He says he has heard talk of a 'hidden treasure' in your tower. He is demanding to see the boy you brought back from the North. He says if you do not open the doors, he will burn the tower down!"

Silas felt a cold chill run down his spine. He knew the stories of the Old King—a man who was twice as cruel as Alaric had ever been. If the King saw Silas, he would either kill him or take him for himself.

Alaric reached for his black steel sword, the blade singing as it left the scabbard. He looked back at Silas, and for the first time, there was no doubt in his eyes.

"Listen to me, Silas," Alaric said, his voice deep and commanding. "You told me I don't have to be a monster. But for my father, I will be the worst nightmare he has ever seen. He wants to take you? He will have to step over my dead body first."

Alaric walked to the door, his hand on the latch. "Stay behind the tapestry if you hear fighting. I am going to face him. I am going to tell him that you are not a 'treasure' or a 'ghost.' You are the person I have chosen to protect with my life."

He looked at Silas one last time, a look of pure devotion. "I am fighting for us now. Not for a bond, and not for a cage. I am fighting so that one day, you might actually want to stay."

With those words, Alaric threw open the doors and marched out to meet the King, leaving Silas alone in the flickering firelight, praying for the safety of the monster who had finally learned how to love.
