Chapter 12 - chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Gap (And the First Time He Falls Behind)

Monday.

There was no session.

At 9:00 a.m., Xie Yu was alone.

The table was set.

Notebook.

Pen.

Water.

Fruit.

Uneven.

Of course.

He stared at it.

"…She's late," he said.

[No notification has been received.]

"…She's never late."

[Correct.]

A pause.

"…She said she had meetings."

[Correct.]

"…She still shows up."

[Correct.]

Another pause.

"…Call her."

[Host does not have her number.]

"…Right."

Silence.

9:10.

9:20.

9:30.

At 9:42—

His phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

"Busy today. Review chapters 4–7. I'll test next session."

That was it.

Xie Yu stared at the screen.

"…That's all?"

[Correct.]

"…No explanation."

[Correct.]

"…No time."

[Correct.]

A pause.

"…She didn't say when."

[Correct.]

Silence.

Xie Yu looked at the table.

At the fruit.

At the empty seat across from him.

Then—

Slowly—

He sat down.

Opened the notebook.

"…Review," he muttered.

He started.

Thirty minutes in—

He stopped.

"…This is wrong," he said.

[Clarify.]

"…Not the math."

A pause.

"…The pacing."

[Explain.]

"…She's pulling away."

Silence.

"…She's accelerating everything," he continued. "Work. Study. Position."

[Correct.]

"…And now she's cutting time here."

[Correct.]

"…That's not consistent."

A beat.

"…Unless—"

He stopped.

Unless this—

Was no longer the priority.

Xie Yu leaned back slowly.

"…System."

[Yes, Host?]

"…What happens in the original story around this time."

A pause.

[Relevant sections are censored.]

"…Of course they are."

He exhaled.

"…Fine. Then logic."

Silence.

"…If she's accelerating her career…"

[Correct.]

"…Then she's reaching her goal faster."

[Correct.]

"…Which means—"

He stopped again.

"…She won't need this."

Silence.

The words settled.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

"…She won't need me," he corrected.

The system did not respond.

Xie Yu looked down at the notebook.

At the problems.

At the solutions.

Then—

Closed it.

"…That's fine," he said.

[Statement uncertain.]

"…It is."

He stood.

Walked to the table.

Looked at the fruit.

Then—

Reached out.

Took a slice.

Uneven.

Bit into it.

"…This is still happening," he said.

[Clarify.]

"…The pattern."

A pause.

"…Even when she's not here."

Silence.

Xie Yu chewed slowly.

"…That's not good."

Tuesday.

No session.

Wednesday.

No session.

Thursday—

Another message.

"Friday. 8:30."

Shorter.

Tighter.

Earlier.

Xie Yu stared at it.

"…She's compressing again."

[Correct.]

"…But not here."

A pause.

"…Outside."

Friday.

8:25 a.m.

The door was already open.

Shen Cixi stepped in.

No knock.

She looked—

Different.

Not just sharper.

Not just faster.

Further.

Like the distance between them had… increased.

Without her moving.

"…You're early," Xie Yu said.

"Yes."

"…You weren't here all week."

"Yes."

"…You didn't explain."

"No."

Silence.

"…Sit," she said.

He sat.

No setup.

No pacing.

"Explain chapter 6," she said.

Xie Yu blinked.

"…That's it?"

"Yes."

"…No warm-up."

"No."

"…No teaching."

"No."

A pause.

"…You're testing."

"Yes."

He exhaled.

Started explaining.

Halfway through—

She interrupted.

"Wrong."

"…No, it's not."

"It is."

"…Where."

She tapped the page.

Exact.

Precise.

Correct.

Xie Yu frowned.

"…That's minor."

"It's not."

"…It doesn't change the result."

"It changes the structure."

A beat.

"…You've gotten stricter," he said.

"Yes."

"…Why."

A pause.

Then—

"Because I don't have time to repeat things," she said.

There it was again.

Time.

"…You had time before."

"No."

"…You made time."

"Yes."

"…Now you're not."

"No."

Silence.

"…You're pulling away," he said.

"No."

"…You are."

"I'm optimizing."

"…Stop saying that."

"No."

A pause.

"…You skipped three sessions," he said.

"Yes."

"…You replaced them with messages."

"Yes."

"…You reduced this."

"Yes."

He looked at her.

Long.

Careful.

"…So this isn't important anymore," he said.

Silence.

For a moment—

She didn't answer.

Didn't deflect.

Didn't redirect.

Then—

"It is," she said.

"…It doesn't look like it."

"It is."

"…Then act like it."

A beat.

Something—

Shifted.

Not visible.

Not obvious.

But—

There.

"…You're behind," she said.

Xie Yu stilled.

"…Because you left."

"No."

"…You removed sessions."

"Yes."

"…That's the same thing."

"No."

A pause.

"…You changed the rules," he said.

"Yes."

"…Without telling me."

"Yes."

Silence.

"…That's not fair."

"It's not supposed to be."

That—

Landed.

"…You're not even pretending anymore," he said.

"No."

A beat.

"…Why."

Silence.

Then—

"Because you noticed," she said.

The words were quiet.

But—

Clear.

Xie Yu looked at her.

"…Noticed what."

A pause.

"That I'm not doing this for the same reason you are," she said.

The air shifted.

"…And what reason is that," he asked.

She looked at him.

Direct.

Steady.

Unhidden.

"You're trying to complete the role," she said.

A beat.

"I'm trying to keep you."

Silence.

The words—

Didn't echo.

Didn't expand.

They just—

Stayed.

Xie Yu didn't speak.

Didn't react.

Didn't—

Move.

"…That's not part of the story," he said finally.

"No," Shen Cixi said.

"It's not."

She closed the notebook.

"That's enough."

Short.

Abrupt.

She stood.

He didn't.

"…You're ending early."

"Yes."

"…You just got here."

"Yes."

A pause.

"…You really don't have time."

"No."

She picked up her bag.

"…Then why come at all," he asked.

A beat.

She looked at him.

"…Because this is still necessary," she said.

"…For what."

A pause.

Then—

"For you to not fall behind me," she said.

"…Or."

Silence.

Then—

"I won't be able to slow down," she said.

And that—

Wasn't a threat.

It was a statement.

She turned.

Walked to the door.

Paused.

"…Catch up," she said.

And left.

The door closed.

Silence.

Xie Yu sat there.

Still.

"…System," he said.

[Yes, Host?]

"…She said she's trying to keep me."

[Correct.]

"…She reduced time here."

[Correct.]

"…But didn't remove it."

[Correct.]

A pause.

"…That's not withdrawal."

[Correct.]

"…That's control."

Silence.

The system didn't argue.

Xie Yu leaned back slowly.

"…I fell behind."

[Correct.]

A beat.

"…Not academically."

He looked at the door.

"…Somewhere else."

Downstairs—

Shen Cixi walked out.

Faster now.

Always faster.

Phone active.

Messages constant.

"Executive meeting confirmed."

"Equity finalized."

"Transfer authority granted."

Her reflection passed glass again.

This time—

She didn't even register it.

Her focus—

Was fixed.

"…Still behind," she murmured.

A pause.

"…Not enough."

Her grip tightened slightly.

"…He noticed too early."

But she didn't slow down.

Didn't stop.

Didn't change direction.

Because slowing down—

Was no longer an option.
