Chapter 3: The Second Lesson (And the First Miscalculation)

If there was one thing Xie Yu prided himself on—

It was that he learned from his mistakes.

Unfortunately, this required first identifying what, exactly, counted as a mistake.

At 8:58 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Xie Yu stood in front of the coffee table and stared down at it like a general reviewing a battlefield.

On it sat:

One textbook (already opened to the correct page).

One notebook (neatly aligned).

Two pens (tested for ink flow).

One bottle of water.

No fruit.

No candy.

No… "positive educational experience enhancers."

He nodded to himself.

"This," he said, "is appropriately indifferent."

A beat.

"…Right?"

The system, as usual, chose not to answer questions it found embarrassing.

Xie Yu straightened slightly and walked to the window, assuming his now-familiar Villain Position™. Arms relaxed. Expression distant. Entire demeanor suggesting he would rather be anywhere else.

This time, he lasted a full thirty seconds before glancing at the clock.

8:59.

A knock.

Exactly on time.

Of course.

"Come in," he said.

The door opened.

Shen Cixi stepped in.

Same as before. Same quiet presence, same controlled expression—but something about her felt… sharper today.

More focused.

Like a blade that had already decided where it would fall.

She closed the door and looked at him.

Then, without greeting, her gaze shifted—

—to the coffee table.

Paused.

Notebook. Textbook. Pens. Water.

No snacks.

Her eyes lingered for half a second.

Then she looked back at him.

"…You adjusted," she said.

Xie Yu resisted the urge to look pleased.

"I don't repeat unnecessary actions."

"Mm."

She walked over, set her bag down, and took her seat without waiting.

"Sit."

Xie Yu sat.

He was starting to suspect this was becoming a pattern.

Shen Cixi opened the notebook from last time, flipped through a few pages, then looked up at him.

"Explain limits," she said.

No warm-up.

No review.

Just immediate execution.

Xie Yu stared at her.

"…You're testing me already?"

"Yes."

"That's inefficient."

"It's efficient."

"…You said that last time."

"And it was correct."

Xie Yu leaned back slightly, narrowing his eyes.

This was different.

Last time, she had explained first. Established control through competence.

This time—

She was testing him before offering anything.

Measuring.

Confirming.

Like she already had an expectation.

"…Fine," he said.

He leaned forward, picked up the pen, and—after a brief internal crisis—started explaining.

Not perfectly.

Not elegantly.

But correctly.

Mostly.

Shen Cixi watched him the entire time.

Unblinking.

Uninterrupted.

When he finished, she nodded once.

"Acceptable," she said.

Acceptable.

Not good.

Not correct.

Acceptable.

Xie Yu felt something in his chest twitch.

"…That's your evaluation?"

"Yes."

"You're very strict."

"You're very behind."

"…You could be less direct."

"You could study more."

A pause.

Xie Yu leaned back again, exhaling through his nose.

There it was again.

That feeling.

Like he was not the one in control of this interaction.

Like the script had quietly shifted when he wasn't looking.

"…Continue," he said.

Shen Cixi did.

This time, the pace was faster.

Less explanation. More questions.

More pressure.

Each time he hesitated, she didn't fill the silence.

She waited.

Not impatiently.

Just… waiting.

Like she knew he would answer eventually.

Like she expected it.

And somehow—

That made it harder not to.

By the time an hour had passed, Xie Yu's posture had changed.

By the second hour, he had stopped pretending to be disinterested.

By the end—

He was frowning at the notebook like it had personally offended him.

"No," he said, tapping the page. "That step—why is that valid?"

Shen Cixi didn't answer immediately.

She looked at him.

Not at the notebook.

At him.

"…You caught it," she said.

Xie Yu paused.

"…What."

"That step," she repeated, tapping the same line. "Most people don't question it."

"…It looked wrong."

"It is," she said calmly. "I wanted to see if you'd notice."

A beat.

Xie Yu stared at her.

"You put a mistake in on purpose."

"Yes."

"To test me."

"Yes."

"…You're enjoying this."

A very small pause.

Then—

"No," Shen Cixi said.

Flat.

Immediate.

Entirely unconvincing.

Xie Yu narrowed his eyes.

But before he could say anything, she flipped the page.

"Next topic," she said.

And just like that, the moment was gone.

When the session ended, it ended just as abruptly as before.

Shen Cixi closed the notebook.

"That's enough."

Xie Yu exhaled slowly, leaning back.

"…You increased the difficulty."

"Yes."

"Without warning."

"Yes."

"That's unfair."

"It's effective."

"…You're very confident in that."

"I am."

She began packing her bag.

Xie Yu watched her.

Again.

That same quiet, precise efficiency.

No wasted movement.

No hesitation.

Like every action had already been decided in advance.

"…You planned this," he said suddenly.

She paused.

"…Planned what."

"This," he gestured between them. "The way you're teaching. The pacing. The tests."

A beat.

Then she zipped her bag closed.

"Yes," she said.

No denial.

No deflection.

Just… yes.

Xie Yu stared at her.

"…Why."

She stood.

"Because it works."

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

"It's not a complete one."

Shen Cixi adjusted the strap of her bag.

Then she looked at him.

Straight at him.

"For you," she said, "this is the fastest way."

A pause.

Something about the way she said it—

Not general.

Not theoretical.

Specific.

For you.

Xie Yu felt that small, familiar stone shift again in the back of his mind.

"…You're very sure about that."

"Yes."

"Based on what."

A beat.

Just a fraction too long.

"…Observation," she said.

Then she turned and walked to the door.

Xie Yu watched her go.

Again.

At the door, she paused.

Again.

This time, she turned halfway.

Not fully.

Just enough that he could see her profile.

"…There were snacks last time," she said.

Xie Yu blinked.

"…You noticed."

"Yes."

A pause.

"…You didn't take any."

"I took one."

"The candy."

"Yes."

"…You didn't take the fruit."

"No."

"…Why."

She didn't answer immediately.

For a moment, she just stood there.

Then—

"I'll take it when it's appropriate," she said.

And then she left.

The door closed.

Silence.

Xie Yu stood there, staring at the space she had occupied.

"…System," he said slowly.

[Yes, Host?]

"…Define 'appropriate.'"

[Insufficient data.]

"…She's weird."

[That is a subjective assessment.]

"She put a wrong step in the solution to test me."

[Correct.]

"She planned the entire session in advance."

[Correct.]

"She's—" he paused, searching for the word. "—targeting weaknesses."

[Also correct.]

"…Is that normal protagonist behavior."

A beat.

[The relevant sections are censored.]

"…Of course they are."

Xie Yu walked back to the coffee table and sat down.

He looked at the notebook.

At the corrected solution.

At the line she had deliberately made wrong.

Then, slowly, he reached for the water bottle.

Paused.

And instead—

He stood up, walked to the kitchen area, and opened the fridge.

A moment later, he returned with a plate of cut fruit.

He set it on the table.

Looked at it.

"…Next time," he said.

The system, wisely, said nothing.

Somewhere below, in the descending elevator—

Shen Cixi leaned back against the mirrored wall.

Her reflection looked back at her.

Calm.

Composed.

Unchanged.

Her hand slipped into her pocket.

Fingers brushed against something small.

She took it out.

A piece of candy.

Unwrapped.

Untouched.

She looked at it for a long moment.

Then, slowly—

She smiled.

It was not a large smile.

Not a bright one.

Just—

Precise.

Measured.

Like something had aligned exactly the way she wanted it to.

"…Faster than expected," she murmured.

The elevator continued its descent.

And somewhere far above, in a penthouse filled with expensive silence and newly opened textbooks—

Xie Yu sat at a coffee table with a plate of fruit he didn't need

—and prepared, very carefully,

to make the same mistake again.
