Chapter 17 - The Ledger Of Balance

Morning light filtered through the thin curtains of Soren's room.

For a moment, he lay still, staring at the ceiling while the quiet sounds of the apartment slowly replaced the distant echoes of the Iron Pit.

Pots clinking in the kitchen.

Water running.

The faint murmur of Elena humming while she cooked.

It was… peaceful.

Sorenth had existed for eons among cosmic thrones, but this quiet human morning felt strangely valuable.

He exhaled and pushed himself upright.

The soreness from the previous night immediately reminded him that peace had a cost.

His ribs still ached.

His shoulder was stiff.

A faint system panel flickered automatically.

---

HP: 52 / 80

---

The increase in Vitality from the previous night had raised his maximum health again.

The damage from the fights remained.

Soren stood, stretched carefully, and got dressed.

School uniform.

Nothing about it hinted that he had spent half the night fighting in an illegal underground arena.

He stepped into the hallway just as Lucas emerged from his room.

Lucas blinked.

"You look like you got hit by a truck."

Soren shrugged.

"Training."

Lucas squinted suspiciously but didn't press.

"Breakfast is ready."

They walked into the kitchen together.

Elena stood at the stove, flipping pancakes, while Mira sat at the table scrolling through her tablet.

Daniel sat across from her, flexing his fingers slowly.

He looked better.

Still recovering from the accident, but stronger than he had been weeks ago.

Elena smiled when Soren entered.

"Morning."

"Morning."

Lucas dropped into a chair immediately.

"I'm starving."

Elena slid plates onto the table.

"Good. Eat."

Daniel rolled his shoulder experimentally.

"Doctor says I can go back to work next week."

Elena turned.

"That soon?"

He nodded.

"They cleared me yesterday."

Lucas grinned.

"Finally."

Daniel chuckled.

"Yeah. Sitting around all day was starting to drive me insane."

Mira looked up from her tablet.

"What about the car?"

Daniel shrugged.

"Insurance called yesterday."

Soren paused slightly.

Daniel continued.

"They're paying out the claim for the old one."

Lucas perked up.

"So we're getting a new car?"

"Eventually," Elena said.

"Once the paperwork finishes."

Daniel nodded.

"Shouldn't take too long."

Soren ate quietly while listening.

They weren't wealthy.

Ironhaven was expensive, and his parents had always balanced bills carefully.

Soren glanced around the table.

Lucas arguing about syrup.

Mira pretending not to watch him.

Elena cooking.

Daniel recovering.

In his previous life, he had traded stars.

Now he found himself thinking about how to make life easier for them.

Maybe the underground fights could help.

Or maybe something more efficient.

Equivalent Exchange could be applied to far more than combat.

He finished breakfast and stood.

Lucas grabbed his bag.

"Ready?"

Soren nodded.

They walked Mira to school first.

The streets were alive with morning commuters and students.

Mira stopped at her school gate and looked back at Soren.

Still suspicious.

Then she disappeared into the building.

Lucas stretched.

"Alright."

They turned toward the academy.

---

Ironhaven Combat Academy

---

Students filled the halls.

Today, Soren moved through them differently.

Cassian.

Semi-Immortals.

Lesser Daemons.

If Cassian existed in Ironhaven, others likely did as well.

Soren activated Target Assessment.

Panels flickered briefly as he passed students.

---

Name: Tessa Armin

Race: Human

---

Name: Rylor Dane

Race: Human

---

Most were normal.

But the possibility remained.

Anyone could be something else.

His first class began.

Professor Malrick stood at the front of the room.

Soren activated Target Assessment.

The panel appeared.

---

Name: Malrick Tovan

Race: Lesser Daemon

Domain Affiliation: Craving

Minor Law: Manipulation

Threat Assessment: Moderate

---

Soren dismissed the panel calmly.

Not surprising.

Malrick had always seemed… wrong.

Now it simply had confirmation.

A Lesser Daemon inside the academy.

Interesting.

Semi-Immortals.

Lesser Daemons.

Two opposing forces, both operating in Ironhaven.

Sorenth leaned slightly back in his chair.

Perhaps both sides could be used.

A plan began forming in the back of his mind.

---

Later, he entered the cultivation hall.

Students sat across the training floor.

Soren activated the Twin Pulse Method.

Two streams of Aetherion circulated through his channels.

The system updated.

---

Aetherion Regeneration Detected

Core Capacity: 47 Units

Current Aetherion: 44 / 47

---

Good.

The previous night's exchanges had drained him.

But cultivation restored the balance.

---

At lunch, Kaedin slid into the seat across from him.

"So?"

Soren spoke quietly.

"Malrick is a Lesser Daemon."

Kaedin blinked.

Then shrugged.

"…Yeah, that sounds about right."

"You're not surprised?"

"Have you met the guy?"

Fair.

Kaedin leaned forward.

"So what are you going to do about it?"

Soren paused.

"I'm not sure yet."

Kaedin frowned.

"That sounds dangerous."

"But I may have an idea."

Soren didn't elaborate.

Kaedin sighed.

"You do that a lot."

---

Afternoon sparring class began shortly after.

Students gathered around the challenge board.

Soren checked the rankings.

His rank:

54

He stepped forward.

"I challenge rank 34."

The room went quiet.

His opponent stepped forward.

Broad shoulders.

Confident stance.

A difficult opponent.

The instructor raised a hand.

But before the fight began—

The system activated.

---

The instructor dropped his hand.

"Begin."

Elias attacked instantly.

Fast.

Precise.

Soren barely blocked the first strike.

Pain shot through his arm.

---

HP: 46 / 80

---

Balanced Strike activated.

His counter landed.

Elias staggered but recovered quickly.

The fight intensified.

Elias pressed aggressively.

Soren checked his reserves mid-fight.

---

Immortal Life Source: 7 out of 22

---

Not enough.

Sorenth gathered Aetherion.

Equivalent Exchange formed.

---

Soren stepped forward.

Balanced Strike.

The impact cracked against Elias' guard.

But he retaliated immediately.

A kick slammed into Soren's ribs.

Pain flared.

Another exchange.

The world slowed slightly.

Balanced Strike again.

The rhythm of combat shifted.

One more exchange.

Elias lunged again.

Soren stepped inside the attack.

Balanced Strike.

Full force.

The blow landed cleanly against Elias' jaw.

He collapsed.

Silence filled the training hall.

The instructor raised a hand.

"Winner."

The system exploded with notifications.

New Ability Unlocked: Value Absorption

New System Capability Unlocked: Stored Value Tracking

Stored Value: 0 / 10

---

Soren stepped away from the ring and opened the new notifications.

Two new descriptions appeared.

---

Value Absorption

Allows the user to absorb the intrinsic value contained within a physical object.

When activated on an item, the system will analyze the object's total measurable value.

Upon confirmation:

• The object is consumed.

• Its physical form disappears.

• The equivalent value is converted into Stored Value.

The value can later be used for:

• fueling abilities

• powering exchanges

• reinforcing techniques

• fulfilling contracts

Higher-value objects generate greater stored value.

---

Stored Value

Stored Value is a reservoir of accumulated exchange potential.

It represents condensed value extracted from objects through Value Absorption.

Stored Value may be used as a flexible currency within the system to:

• empower abilities such as Balanced Strike

• stabilize complex exchanges

• substitute certain exchange costs

• fulfill system-based contracts

Current Capacity: 10 units

Capacity increases with level, authority growth, and artifact recovery.

---

Soren read the descriptions carefully.

Which meant he could now absorb the value of objects… and keep that value stored for later use.

That changed everything.

Very useful.

Very dangerous.

---

After school, Soren and Kaedin headed underground again.

The hidden staircase opened into the familiar marketplace.

Lanterns glowed.

Merchants whispered.

Arvel stood behind his stall.

The Ledger of Balance rested on the table.

Before speaking, Soren activated Target Assessment.

---

Name: Arvel

Race: Semi-Immortal

Domain Affiliation: Equivalent Exchange

Minor Law: Record

Threat Assessment: Low

---

Soren almost smiled.

Of course.

Arvel watched him approach.

"Back already?"

Soren placed the credits on the table.

"Four thousand."

Arvel counted quickly.

Then slid the book forward.

"Pleasure doing business."

The moment Soren touched the cover—

The system erupted.

---

---

---

Soren closed the panels slowly.

Arvel was watching him.

Curious.

Interested.

Suspicious.

Soren leaned slightly forward.

"Arvel."

"Yes?"

Soren lowered his voice.

"We should speak somewhere more private."

Arvel's eyes narrowed slightly.

Suspicion flickered.

But so did curiosity.

"…Perhaps we should."

Soren smiled faintly.

Because the game had just Started.
