"This was a stupid idea," Linn said, and her voice filled every inch of that cupboard.
They'd got in here when the crowd broke, through the first door that opened, and none of them had seen the inside of it before they committed. Narrow. Black. Shelves down one wall with tins on them that rattled every time somebody breathed.
The door was shut. Linn had been going since the second it closed.
"A genuinely stupid idea." She wasn't anywhere near finished. The words bounced off the shelves and came back smaller. "Even if your boyfriend was one of the people they were lining up. What was the three of us standing in a crowd going to do about it? Tell me that. What exactly was your presence going to achieve?"
"It's already happened," Venna said. Her voice sat lower, closer to the floor. Somewhere in the dark her shoulder was pressed to Mercury's arm. "We can't undo any of it from inside a cupboard. What we can do is work out how we get out."
