Chapter 97 - Chapter 97: The Step That Brings You Back

The space didn't collapse.

That was the first thing Edrin noticed.

When he let go—

Nothing fell apart.

Nothing reset.

Nothing disappeared.

"…Huh," he muttered. "…that's new."

For once—

Something stayed.

Not because he forced it.

Not because he held it together.

But because it no longer needed him to.

Lyra's voice echoed faintly.

"…Edrin?"

He looked up.

Still couldn't see them—

But the connection felt clearer.

Closer.

"…I'm here," he called back.

A pause.

"…I think I'm done."

Ronan's voice followed immediately.

"DONE WITH WHAT?!"

"…WITH FALLING!"

"…GOOD! KEEP DOING THAT!"

Edrin snorted softly.

"…I'll try."

He looked down.

The space beneath him—

No longer flickering.

No longer unstable.

Not a path.

Not exactly.

But something steady.

Something that didn't vanish the moment he lost focus.

"…That's different."

Kael's voice came through, calm as ever.

"…You have established continuity."

Edrin blinked.

"…That sounds important."

"It is."

"…Great."

He took a step.

The ground held.

Without effort.

Without forcing it.

Without thinking too hard.

Edrin froze mid-step.

"…Wait."

Another step.

Still stable.

"…No way."

Lyra's voice softened.

"…What is it?"

Edrin laughed quietly.

"…I don't have to fight it anymore."

Silence.

Then—

"…Of course," Lyra said.

"…You resolved what was unstable."

Edrin nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…That makes sense."

Ronan chimed in.

"SO YOU CAN WALK NOW OR WHAT?"

Edrin looked ahead.

"…Yeah."

A breath.

"…I think I can."

And this time—

When he moved—

He didn't create the path.

He didn't force it.

He simply—

Walked.

And the space accepted him.

Not because he demanded it.

But because he had already done what was needed.

"…Okay," he said. "…this is definitely better."

He took a few more steps.

Steady.

Natural.

Almost normal.

And then—

The space shifted.

Not beneath him.

Around him.

Edrin frowned.

"…Wait."

The emptiness—

Didn't close in.

Didn't collapse.

It expanded.

Or maybe—

It was clearing.

Revealing something else.

"…Oh."

Ahead—

Light.

Not bright.

Not overwhelming.

But present.

Real.

Edrin exhaled.

"…That's new."

Lyra's voice sharpened slightly.

"…Edrin… we see it too."

Ronan laughed.

"FINALLY! SOMETHING THAT ISN'T TRYING TO KILL US!"

"…Don't jinx it."

Kael spoke quietly.

"…It is an exit."

Edrin blinked.

"…That was fast."

"…No."

A pause.

"…You are ready."

Edrin smiled faintly.

"…That's a weird feeling."

He walked forward.

Not hesitating.

Not doubting.

Because for the first time—

There was no reason to.

The space didn't resist.

Didn't test.

Didn't demand anything more.

It simply… allowed.

Edrin stepped into the light—

And everything shifted.

Not violently.

Not suddenly.

Just… changing.

The ground returned.

Solid.

Stable.

Real.

Edrin blinked.

"…Oh."

He looked around.

And there they were.

Lyra.

Ronan.

Kael.

Standing just a few steps away.

Ronan grinned.

"Took you long enough."

Edrin smirked.

"…I was busy not falling."

Lyra stepped closer.

"…Are you alright?"

Edrin nodded.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Better than before."

Kael observed him carefully.

"…You are stabilized."

Edrin raised an eyebrow.

"…That's the second time you've said something like that."

Kael didn't elaborate.

Of course he didn't.

Ronan stretched.

"So what now?"

Edrin looked around.

The space—

No longer broken.

No longer shifting.

No longer reacting.

Just… there.

Calm.

Quiet.

Complete.

"…I think we're done here."

Lyra smiled softly.

"…Yes."

Edrin took a breath.

Then exhaled.

"…That was… a lot."

Ronan laughed.

"You say that every time."

"…Because it is every time."

Kael turned slightly.

"…Then we proceed."

Edrin nodded.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…We proceed."

And for the first time since entering this broken world—

They walked forward—

Not because they were being tested.

Not because they were forced.

But because they chose to continue.

Together.
