Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: The Echo That Shouldn’t Change

The moment the door closed—

The world shifted again.

Not violently.

Not like before.

But enough.

Edrin felt it immediately.

"…Okay," he muttered. "…something's different."

Ronan stretched.

"Everything's always different."

"No, I mean—"

Edrin stopped.

Turned slightly.

"…The echoes."

Lyra followed his gaze.

"…They moved."

Behind them—

The echoes stood closer.

Not distant.

Not hesitant.

Closer than they had ever been.

Edrin blinked.

"…That's new."

Kael observed carefully.

"…They are stabilizing further."

Ronan frowned.

"…Again?"

Edrin scratched his head.

"…I didn't do anything this time."

Lyra shook her head.

"…You did."

Edrin blinked.

"…What?"

She stepped beside him.

"…You defined something that wasn't defined."

A pause.

"…That affects more than just that place."

Edrin stared at her.

"…How?"

Kael answered.

"…Concepts are not isolated here."

Edrin groaned.

"…That sounds complicated."

"It is."

"…Great."

He looked back at the echoes again.

They weren't just closer.

They looked—

Clearer.

Less faded.

Less incomplete.

"…They look more real."

Lyra nodded.

"Yes."

Ronan crossed his arms.

"…So what, you fixed them by accident again?"

Edrin frowned.

"…I didn't fix anything."

A pause.

"…I just didn't make it worse."

Kael spoke quietly.

"…That is enough."

Edrin sighed.

"…That's becoming a theme."

The echoes took a step forward.

Not all at once.

Not perfectly in sync.

But together.

Edrin froze.

"…They're moving on their own again."

Lyra smiled softly.

"…Yes."

Edrin swallowed.

"…Okay."

A pause.

"…That's still a little creepy."

Ronan smirked.

"You'll get used to it."

"I hope not!"

The path ahead remained stable.

Still unbroken.

Still… wrong.

But now—

It didn't feel as heavy.

Edrin noticed.

"…It's lighter."

Lyra nodded.

"…Because something was resolved."

Edrin frowned.

"…We didn't fix the world."

"No," she said.

"…But we changed part of it."

Edrin looked down at his hands again.

Still slightly out of sync.

Still… not fully right.

But steadier than before.

"…I feel it too."

Kael glanced at him.

"…Your instability is decreasing."

Edrin blinked.

"…Oh."

A pause.

"…That's good, right?"

"Yes."

"…Finally."

Ronan laughed.

"Look at that. You're not falling apart anymore."

"I wasn't falling apart!"

"…You definitely were."

"…Okay, a little."

Edrin exhaled slowly.

Then looked ahead.

"…So what's next?"

Silence.

Because they all felt it.

Something ahead—

Was different.

Not hostile.

Not neutral.

Not waiting.

Something else.

Edrin frowned.

"…I don't like that feeling."

Ronan grinned.

"Then we're going the right way."

"I hate that you're always right."

Lyra's expression grew more serious.

"…Be ready."

Kael stepped forward.

"…We are close to something."

Edrin blinked.

"…Close to what?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He kept walking.

And the further they went—

The clearer it became.

Ahead—

The path split.

Not cracked.

Not broken.

Clean.

Two directions.

Edrin stopped.

"…Oh."

Ronan raised an eyebrow.

"…We've never had that before."

Lyra stepped forward slowly.

"…A choice."

Edrin stared at the two paths.

"…I don't like choices."

Ronan smirked.

"Because you have to think?"

"Yes!"

Kael observed both paths carefully.

"…They are not identical."

Edrin blinked.

"…Obviously."

Kael continued.

"…One is stable."

A pause.

"…The other is not."

Edrin frowned.

"…Which is which?"

Kael didn't answer.

Because the answer—

Wasn't that simple.

Lyra studied them both.

"…They feel different."

Edrin sighed.

"…That's not helpful."

The echoes behind them—

Didn't move.

Didn't choose.

They waited.

Edrin looked at them.

"…They're leaving it to us."

Ronan crossed his arms.

"…Of course they are."

Edrin groaned.

"…Great."

He looked at the two paths again.

One—

Calm.

Still.

Safe.

The other—

Subtle.

Unsteady.

Familiar.

Edrin's chest tightened slightly.

"…I don't like either of these."

Lyra glanced at him.

"…Why?"

Edrin hesitated.

Then—

"…Because one feels too easy."

A pause.

"…And the other feels like everything we've been dealing with."

Ronan grinned.

"So the usual?"

"…Yeah."

Kael finally spoke.

"…This is not a trap."

Edrin blinked.

"…That's new."

"It is a divergence."

Edrin frowned.

"…Meaning?"

Kael looked at him.

"…Both paths continue."

Silence.

Lyra's voice was quiet.

"…But not the same way."

Edrin exhaled slowly.

"…Of course not."

He looked at both paths again.

Longer this time.

Thinking.

Actually thinking.

"…Okay."

A pause.

"…New rule."

Ronan groaned loudly.

"Of course."

Edrin smirked faintly.

"…If something feels too safe…"

A pause.

"…It probably skips something important."

Ronan grinned.

"Now that's a dangerous rule."

Edrin nodded.

"…Yeah."

A breath.

"…But it's mine."

Lyra watched him carefully.

"…Edrin…"

He looked at her.

"…I don't want to take the easy path."

A pause.

"…Not here."

Kael nodded once.

"…Then you have chosen."

Edrin looked at the unstable path.

The one that felt—

Wrong.

Familiar.

Like everything else they'd faced.

He sighed.

"…I really need to stop doing this."

Ronan laughed.

"No you don't."

Edrin stepped forward.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…I don't."

And as he chose—

The echoes moved.

Following him.

Not the safe path.

The other one.

Lyra and Kael followed without hesitation.

Ronan grinned.

"Of course we're doing this."

Edrin shook his head.

"…Of course we are."

Behind them—

The other path remained.

Unchanged.

Untouched.

Waiting for a choice that would never come.

And ahead—

The unstable path shifted slightly.

Not resisting.

Not attacking.

Accepting.

Because the decision had been made.
