Chapter 74 - Chapter 74: The Thing He Refuses to Lose

There was no step.

No ground.

No falling.

No sensation of movement at all.

And yet—

Edrin knew.

He had crossed.

"…Okay," he whispered.

"…This is worse."

There was nothing around him.

No sky.

No ground.

No sound.

No direction.

Just—

Him.

Edrin swallowed.

"…I'm still here."

For now.

He lifted his hand.

He could see it.

Feel it.

But something was wrong.

"…No."

The connection—

Was gone.

Not weakened.

Not distant.

Gone.

Edrin's breath quickened.

"…Lyra?"

No answer.

"…Ronan?"

Nothing.

"…Kael?"

Silence.

He clenched his fists.

"…Okay."

A pause.

"…Don't panic."

He was already panicking.

"…Think."

The space didn't react.

Didn't shift.

Didn't acknowledge him.

It didn't care he was there.

Or wasn't.

Edrin's chest tightened.

"…This is what it does."

A breath.

"…It removes everything else."

Not killing.

Not destroying.

Just—

Leaving nothing to connect to.

He shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…That's not enough."

His thoughts started to blur.

Not fading.

But losing shape.

Like ideas without anchors.

"…No, no, no."

He stepped forward—

Or tried to.

There was no movement.

No distance.

No change.

"…This is stupid."

His voice didn't echo.

Didn't carry.

It just… existed.

And then didn't.

Edrin clenched his jaw.

"…I said I wouldn't lose it."

But what was "it"?

There was nothing here.

Nothing to hold.

Nothing to feel.

Nothing to remember.

His thoughts slipped again.

Names—

Fading at the edges.

"…Ly…"

He froze.

"…No."

He grabbed his head.

"…No."

That was wrong.

That wasn't allowed.

"…I said I wouldn't let go."

But there was nothing to hold.

Nothing—

Except—

He stopped.

"…Wait."

A breath.

"…That's not true."

There was something.

Not outside.

Inside.

He closed his eyes.

Not because it helped.

But because there was nothing else to see.

"…I remember."

A pause.

"…I remember falling."

Fragments.

Not clear.

Not complete.

But real.

"…I remember being weak."

Another breath.

"…I remember running."

A faint laugh.

"…I was really good at that."

The emptiness didn't change.

Didn't react.

But Edrin did.

"…I remember choosing to stay."

Lyra's voice.

Ronan's laughter.

Kael's silence.

The echoes reaching.

The figure that stayed.

"…I remember."

The space trembled.

Just slightly.

Not reacting.

Not responding.

But something—

Didn't erase.

Edrin opened his eyes.

"…You can take everything else."

A pause.

"…But not that."

The pressure came then.

Not force.

Not pull.

Removal.

Stronger now.

Trying to strip even that away.

Edrin staggered—

Or felt like he did.

"…No."

A breath.

"…That's mine."

The memories flickered.

Not disappearing.

But being tested.

"…I chose that."

Another breath.

"…I'm still choosing it."

The nothing pressed harder.

Trying to erase the meaning.

Not the memory.

The connection to it.

Edrin clenched his fists.

"…No."

A pause.

"…You don't get to decide what matters."

Silence.

The space didn't break.

Didn't crack.

Didn't collapse.

But—

Something held.

Something remained.

Edrin stood there—

In a place where nothing should exist—

Holding onto something that shouldn't survive.

"…I'm still here."

And this time—

It wasn't a question.

The nothing pressed again.

Harder.

Testing.

But it couldn't take everything.

Because Edrin—

Refused to let go of the one thing it couldn't define.

Choice.

A faint shift—

Barely noticeable—

But real.

Edrin blinked.

"…Did I just—"

The space didn't respond.

But it didn't erase him either.

He took a breath.

"…Okay."

A small, shaky smile formed.

"…That's something."

And for the first time—

In a place where nothing should exist—

Something remained.

Not the world.

Not the path.

Not even connection.

Just—

Him.

And what he refused to lose.
