Chapter 71 - Chapter 71: The One Who Stayed

Edrin didn't like being watched.

Not by monsters.

Not by the sky.

And definitely not by something that understood him.

"…You're just going to stand there?" he asked.

The figure nodded once.

"…Yes."

Edrin frowned.

"…That's unsettling."

Ronan smirked. "You say that like everything else isn't."

"That's different. This one feels… polite."

Lyra studied the figure carefully.

"…It's not hostile."

Kael added,

"…But it is not passive either."

Edrin sighed.

"…Of course it isn't."

The echoes behind them remained still.

Not afraid.

Not fading.

Watching the figure the same way it watched them.

Like something familiar.

Edrin noticed.

"…They recognize you."

The figure's gaze shifted slightly.

"…They remember."

Edrin blinked.

"…Remember what?"

The figure didn't answer immediately.

Instead, it took another step forward.

Still calm.

Still steady.

"…Before."

Silence.

Lyra's voice softened.

"…Before the world broke?"

The figure nodded.

Edrin swallowed.

"…So you're from here."

"…Yes."

Ronan crossed his arms.

"…And you didn't turn into one of those things."

The figure looked at him.

"…No."

Edrin tilted his head.

"…Why?"

A pause.

Then—

"…I chose not to."

Edrin blinked.

"…That's it?"

Lyra frowned slightly.

"…It's not that simple."

The figure looked at her.

"…It is."

Kael's voice was low.

"…Choice requires something to choose with."

The figure nodded.

"…Yes."

Edrin scratched his head.

"…I feel like I'm missing something important."

Ronan laughed. "That's normal."

"Not helpful!"

The figure turned slightly—

Looking at the path ahead.

Then back at Edrin.

"…You did the same."

Edrin froze.

"…No, I didn't."

A pause.

"…I just… didn't let go."

The figure nodded.

"…That is the same."

Edrin opened his mouth—

Then closed it.

"…I don't like that answer."

Lyra smiled faintly.

"…It makes sense."

Edrin sighed.

"…I know."

The figure stepped closer again.

Not threatening.

Not intrusive.

Just… present.

"…The others could not hold."

Edrin glanced back at the echoes.

"…They almost didn't."

"…But they did."

Edrin nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Barely."

The figure's gaze softened slightly.

"…Barely is enough."

Silence.

Ronan looked between them.

"…Are we having a philosophical conversation in the middle of a broken world?"

Edrin shrugged.

"…Apparently."

Kael didn't interrupt.

Lyra didn't either.

Because this—

Was different.

The figure looked at Edrin again.

Longer this time.

"…You will face more."

Edrin groaned.

"…I figured."

A pause.

"…Can we not?"

The figure didn't respond.

Because the answer was obvious.

Edrin sighed.

"…Yeah."

The figure turned slightly—

Facing the path ahead fully now.

"…Some will try to correct."

Edrin nodded.

"…We met one."

"…Others will try to erase."

Edrin blinked.

"…That sounds worse."

Ronan grinned.

"Now I'm interested."

Edrin shook his head.

"…You would be."

Lyra's voice was serious.

"…And you?"

The figure paused.

Then answered.

"…I will watch."

Edrin stared.

"…That's still your plan?"

"…Yes."

Edrin sighed.

"…You're not going to help?"

A pause.

The figure looked at him.

Not cold.

Not distant.

Just… honest.

"…You are already helping."

Edrin blinked.

"…That's not what I meant."

Lyra placed a hand lightly on his arm.

"…It might be all it can do."

Edrin frowned.

"…That doesn't feel fair."

Kael spoke quietly.

"…This world is no longer fair."

Edrin exhaled.

"…Yeah."

The figure stepped aside.

Not blocking the path anymore.

Making space.

"…Continue."

Edrin hesitated.

Then looked at the others.

Ronan shrugged.

"Works for me."

Lyra nodded.

"…We move forward."

Kael stepped ahead.

As always.

Edrin looked at the figure one last time.

"…You really are just going to watch?"

The figure met his gaze.

"…Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"…But I will remember."

Edrin froze slightly.

"…That feels important."

Lyra nodded softly.

"…It is."

Edrin gave a small, tired smile.

"…Alright."

He turned.

Stepped forward.

Following the path once more.

And behind them—

The echoes followed.

And behind them—

The one who stayed—

Didn't move.

Didn't interfere.

Didn't change anything.

It simply watched.

And remembered.
