Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: The Choice to Be Imperfect

Edrin felt… calm.

Too calm.

The fear was gone.

The hesitation was gone.

The noise in his head—

Gone.

Everything was clear.

Simple.

Correct.

"…This is better," he said quietly.

Lyra stepped closer, her voice steady but urgent. "Edrin, look at me."

He did.

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

"…I am."

Her hands trembled slightly. "That's not what I mean."

Edrin tilted his head.

A familiar motion—

But now it was precise.

Measured.

Perfect.

"…You're worried," he said.

"Yes," she replied.

"There's no need to be."

Ronan stepped forward, frustrated. "Yeah, there is. You sound like them."

Edrin glanced at him.

Calm.

Unshaken.

"…Because I understand now."

Kael's voice cut through.

"No."

Edrin looked at him.

"…No?"

Kael stepped closer.

"Understanding is not the same as surrender."

Edrin paused.

Just slightly.

"…This isn't surrender."

The figure behind him remained still.

Watching.

Waiting.

Certain.

Edrin continued.

"…This is clarity."

Lyra shook her head. "No."

A step closer.

"You're quiet."

Edrin frowned faintly.

"…That's not a problem."

"It is," she said.

"You're not supposed to be quiet."

Ronan nodded. "You're supposed to panic. A lot."

Edrin blinked.

"…That doesn't sound like a strength."

"It is," Ronan said. "It's your strength."

Edrin hesitated.

"…That doesn't make sense."

Kael spoke again.

"You removed everything it could predict."

Edrin nodded slowly. "…Yes."

"And now it gave you something it can control."

Silence.

Edrin's expression shifted—

Just slightly.

"…No."

Lyra stepped forward again.

"Edrin, listen to yourself."

"You're not choosing anymore."

Edrin's breath caught.

"…I am."

"Then choose something wrong," she said.

A pause.

"…Right now."

Edrin froze.

That word—

Wrong.

It echoed.

Uncomfortable.

Unstable.

Unclear.

The figure behind him spoke.

"Deviation unnecessary."

Edrin's mind settled again.

"…She's mistaken."

Lyra shook her head.

"No."

A step closer.

"You're letting it decide for you."

Ronan added, "You've been fighting that the whole time."

Kael's voice was quiet.

"And you were winning."

Edrin's grip tightened.

Just slightly.

"…This is easier."

Lyra nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"…That's why it's wrong."

Silence.

Edrin's chest tightened.

Just a little.

The calm wavered.

"…I don't want to struggle."

Lyra's voice softened.

"I know."

A small step forward.

"But that's you."

Edrin's breathing shifted.

Not perfectly even anymore.

"…I don't like that."

Ronan smirked faintly. "We know."

Edrin looked down at his hand.

Still steady.

Still controlled.

Still… not his.

"…This isn't me," he whispered.

The figure behind him spoke again.

"Correction optimal."

Edrin flinched.

Slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…No, it's not."

Lyra's eyes widened slightly.

"Edrin—"

He took a step back.

Not clean.

Not balanced.

A small stumble.

And for the first time—

He smiled.

"…That felt right."

The figure moved.

For the first time since touching him—

It reacted.

"Deviation detected."

Edrin laughed weakly.

"…Yeah."

Another step back—

Uneven—

Uncertain—

Real.

The calm cracked.

The fear returned.

The doubt followed.

His breathing became uneven again.

"…Okay," he said.

"…I'm scared again."

Ronan grinned. "There he is."

Lyra smiled softly. "Welcome back."

Kael nodded once.

Edrin exhaled shakily.

"…I liked it better when I wasn't scared."

The figure stepped forward.

Faster now.

More urgent.

"Correction incomplete."

Edrin shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…I'm staying like this."

Lyra raised her hand, magic forming again.

Ronan stepped forward.

Kael readied his blade.

Edrin tightened his grip.

Hands shaking.

Stance uneven.

Heart racing.

"…New rule," he said.

Ronan laughed. "Of course."

Edrin smiled faintly.

"…I don't need to be complete."

The figure lunged—

Desperate—

Trying to restore control—

Trying to finish the correction—

Edrin moved.

Not perfectly.

Not predictably.

But freely.

The attack missed.

Again.

And this time—

It wasn't because he removed everything.

It was because he chose—

To keep what made him incomplete.

Edrin stepped forward.

Fear and all.

And struck.
