Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: The Voice That Knows

Edrin had one clear thought.

Don't move.

Which was unusual.

Because normally, his thoughts were more like run, panic, or fall in a useful direction.

But this time—

He stayed still.

"…Why isn't it attacking?" he whispered.

Lyra's voice was low. "Because it doesn't need to."

"I don't like that answer."

The shape ahead remained motionless.

Not shifting.

Not reacting.

Just… there.

Watching.

Edrin squinted slightly. "…I can't see it clearly."

"That's intentional," Kael said.

"That's unsettling."

Ronan stepped slightly to the side. "Then let's make it move."

"No," Kael said immediately.

Ronan paused. "…No?"

"This isn't something you rush," Kael continued.

Edrin nodded quickly. "I agree with him. I strongly agree with not rushing."

Ronan sighed. "You two are no fun."

"I like being alive," Edrin replied.

"That again."

The air shifted.

Subtle.

But enough.

Edrin felt it—

That same pressure—

But now it wasn't just watching.

It was… focusing.

"…It's looking at me again," he said.

"Yes," Lyra replied.

"I would like it to look at someone else."

"It won't."

Edrin sighed. "Of course it won't."

The shape moved.

Not forward.

Not closer.

Just… clearer.

As if the darkness itself was stepping aside.

Edrin's breath caught.

"…That's not like the others."

"No," Kael said.

It wasn't unstable.

It wasn't shifting.

It wasn't adapting.

It was—

Complete.

A tall figure, more defined than any Invader they had seen before. Its core wasn't flickering or pulsing wildly—it glowed steadily, almost calmly.

Controlled.

Edrin swallowed.

"…I don't like calm enemies."

"You shouldn't," Lyra said.

The figure tilted its head.

Then—

It spoke.

Not with sound.

Not with voice.

But directly.

Inside.

Edrin froze.

"…No," he said immediately. "No, no, no—this is exactly what I didn't want."

"What?" Ronan asked.

Edrin pointed at his head. "It's talking."

Lyra's expression tightened. "So it's true."

Kael stepped forward slightly. "What is it saying?"

Edrin hesitated.

Then—

"It knows my name."

Silence.

Ronan frowned. "That's not new."

"No," Edrin said quietly. "But this feels different."

The voice came again.

Clearer.

Sharper.

Edrin flinched.

"…It says I'm… inefficient."

Ronan blinked. "…That's rude."

"That's accurate," Edrin replied.

Lyra stepped closer. "What else?"

Edrin's expression shifted.

"…It says I'm… incomplete."

Kael's gaze sharpened. "Explain."

"I don't know!" Edrin snapped. "It's just… there."

The figure didn't move.

Didn't attack.

It simply stood—

Watching him.

Speaking only to him.

Edrin clenched his jaw.

"…I don't like being evaluated."

The voice returned.

Stronger.

Edrin's breath caught.

"…It says I'm… unpredictable."

Ronan smirked. "Well, that's true."

Edrin nodded slowly. "…It doesn't like that."

"Good," Lyra said.

Edrin shook his head.

"…No. It doesn't understand it."

A pause.

"…And it wants to."

The air grew heavier.

The figure stepped forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Edrin stepped back instinctively.

"…No, we're not doing that."

Kael raised his blade slightly. "Prepare."

Ronan grinned. "Finally."

Edrin shook his head. "No, this isn't like the others."

Lyra's voice was tense. "What do you mean?"

Edrin stared at the figure.

"…It's not trying to learn from fighting."

A pause.

"…It's trying to understand me."

Silence.

Ronan's grin faded slightly.

Kael's stance shifted.

Lyra's eyes narrowed.

The figure stopped.

Just a few steps away.

Close enough now.

Clear.

Watching.

The voice came again—

Sharper than before.

Edrin flinched.

"…It says I'm… the error."

The chamber went still.

Edrin swallowed.

"…I don't know what that means."

Kael's voice was quiet. "I think it does."

The figure raised one hand.

Slowly.

Not attacking.

Not yet.

Edrin's grip tightened.

"…This is different," he said again.

"Yes," Lyra replied.

Edrin took a breath.

"…New rule."

Ronan sighed. "Another one?"

Edrin nodded.

"…If something understands me better than I do…"

A pause.

"…I hit it."

Ronan grinned.

"There it is."

The figure moved.

Fast.

Not like before.

Not testing.

Not copying.

Direct.

Edrin reacted instantly—

But this time—

Not just instinct.

Not just panic.

Choice.

He stepped—

Turned—

Adjusted—

The attack missed.

Barely.

But clean.

Edrin's eyes widened.

"…Okay."

A pause.

"…This is definitely worse."

And for the first time—

The figure didn't hesitate.

It attacked again.
