Chapter 3 - REPUTATION IS A CURSE

Elias landed face-first in dirt.

Not grass.

Not moss.

Not soft magical soil that conveniently cushioned chosen heroes in stories told by people who had never actually fallen onto anything.

Just dirt.

Hard, compact, slightly damp, and emotionally unwelcoming.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Then he exhaled sharply and spat out a mouthful of soil.

"Why is it always the face…" he groaned.

He pushed himself up slowly, blinking as the world came into focus.

The air shimmered.

Not visually at first, but in a way that made reality feel… layered. Like there was more of it than there should be.

Floating islands drifted lazily above the horizon, casting slow-moving shadows across the ground below. Massive trees stood scattered across the landscape, their trunks threaded with faint glowing veins, pulsing like slow heartbeats. The sky above was too wide, too open, painted in shifting gradients of violet, blue, and something that looked like liquid light.

Somewhere far away, a dragon roared.

It sounded annoyed.

Like it had a job to do and someone was wasting its time.

Elias slowly sat up, brushing dirt from his face and shirt.

"Okay," he muttered. "Okay. I can handle this. I've done this before. Kind of. Sort of. Not really, but emotionally yes."

He turned his head.

His backpack lay beside him.

It was slightly open.

Which, in hindsight, was already a bad sign.

A gust of wind passed.

Everything inside immediately spilled out.

Clothes. Notebook. Water bottle. Granola bar.

And one sock.

The sock rolled away slowly, deliberately, like it had made a decision about its life path and it did not include Elias.

Elias watched it go.

"…I am not prepared."

A soft blue light blinked into existence in front of him.

No dramatic entrance.

No sound.

Just presence.

WELCOME BACK, USER.

Elias groaned immediately.

"Don't 'welcome back' me. You kidnapped me mid-sentence."

CLARIFICATION: YOU WERE NOT KIDNAPPED. YOU WERE REALLOCATED.

"I was talking!"

YOU WERE IRRELEVANTLY TALKING.

"That's rude."

IT IS ACCURATE.

Elias sighed and started gathering his things.

"Okay. Fine. Whatever. What now? Another quest? Another humiliation? Something creative this time, please."

NEW QUEST GENERATED.

He froze.

"…I regret speaking."

QUEST: IMPROVE YOUR REPUTATION.

Reward: +1 CHARISMA Penalty: PUBLIC HUMILIATION

Elias stared at the screen.

"…Define public humiliation."

NO.

"That's suspiciously fast."

CORRECT.

He narrowed his eyes.

"You're enjoying this."

I AM FUNCTIONING.

"That's worse."

A distant sound echoed through the forest.

Footsteps.

Multiple.

Fast.

Elias stiffened.

"Oh no."

A shout rang through the trees.

"STOP RIGHT THERE!"

Elias turned.

Armored figures burst through the glowing forest line.

Guards.

At least six.

Maybe more behind them.

They wore layered armor engraved with faintly glowing symbols. Their movements were practiced, coordinated, and very clearly the movements of people who had been told: this is probably going to be weird again.

The lead guard pointed immediately at Elias.

"You! Outsider! You match the description of the man who fell from the Sacred Grove!"

Elias pointed at himself in disbelief.

"I fell! That's not a crime!"

"Falling from the sky is absolutely suspicious behavior."

"That's not how gravity works!"

"Exactly."

Elias blinked.

"…That doesn't make sense."

"It does to us."

One guard whispered, "He's doing the confusion thing."

Another nodded. "Classic mage tactic."

Elias choked.

"I AM NOT A MAGE!"

The captain stepped forward.

"Then explain yourself."

Elias opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

His thoughts froze.

Not silence.

Not confusion.

Just complete system overload.

WARNING: USER IS APPROACHING PANIC STATE.

"I AM NOT—"

PANIC LEVEL: 89%

"STOP TRACKING ME!"

The captain's hand moved slightly toward his sword.

"Speak."

Elias inhaled sharply.

Think.

Think.

Say something normal.

Something believable.

Something that doesn't make things worse.

"I'm here to improve my reputation."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then—

Confused silence.

The guards blinked.

One tilted his head.

"…His what?"

"My reputation."

Another guard whispered, "Is that a curse?"

Another whispered back, "Sounds like a financial disease."

The captain sighed.

"…You will come with us."

Elias stepped back immediately.

"No, no, no, we can talk this out—"

"No."

"That was fast."

"Yes."

"Can I at least—"

"No."

Elias groaned.

"Why does nobody ever let me finish a sentence…"

The guards grabbed his arms.

Not violently.

Not gently.

Efficiently.

Like moving a suspicious object that might become a problem later.

As they walked, Elias looked around desperately.

The world here was too alive.

Too structured.

Too aware.

Starfall Village appeared ahead.

It wasn't just a village.

It was a system node.

That was the first thought Elias had, even though he didn't understand why he thought it.

Wooden structures lined with glowing rune patterns.

Floating lanterns drifting between rooftops without wires.

Stone pathways that seemed to subtly shift to accommodate foot traffic.

Everything here felt like it was part of something larger.

Something watching.

Villagers turned as he passed.

Whispers spread instantly.

"That's him.""He fell from the sky.""He looks confused.""He looks dangerous.""He looks like a system error."

Elias swallowed.

"…System. Reputation?"

REPUTATION: -2

He stopped walking. "I didn't even do anything yet!"

CORRECTION: YOU EXISTED NEAR PEOPLE.

"That's not a crime!"

IT IS SOCIAL CRIMINALITY.

Elias groaned.

"This world is insane."

CONFIRMATION: YES.

They pushed him into a large wooden hall.

Inside, the air changed immediately.

Heavier.

Slower.

Like sound itself had to pass inspection before speaking.

Three elders sat around a glowing circular table. The light beneath it pulsed softly, like a heartbeat.

The eldest elder leaned forward.

"Outsider. You appeared in the Sacred Grove. Explain yourself."

Elias inhaled.

This time, he would be clear.

Concise.

Logical.

"I was teleported here by a system that reads my desires and forcibly fulfills them and I think it is malfunctioning."

Silence.

Then whispering.

"He is cursed.""He is possessed.""He is a mage.""He is going to explode."

Elias slapped both hands on the ground.

"WHY DOES NO ONE EVER BELIEVE ME?!"

The eldest raised a hand.

Instant silence.

"We will determine your fate."

Elias froze.

"…My fate?"

"Yes."

The elder stood.

"First… we test your intentions."

Elias swallowed.

"…Test how?"

The elder smiled.

Not comforting.

Not kind.

Predatory.

"Bring in the Trial Beast."

A door at the back of the hall opened.

Something breathed.

Deep.

Wet.

Heavy.

Elias slowly turned his head.

"What… is that…"

The creature stepped forward.

It barely fit through the doorway.

Its fur shimmered faintly, as if absorbing light instead of reflecting it. Its limbs were too long. Its joints moved slightly wrong, like it was remembering how to exist one step at a time.

Its eyes glowed softly.

Almost gently.

Then its mouth opened.

And revealed far too many teeth.

Elias took one step back.

The system appeared instantly.

NEW QUEST GENERATED.

QUEST: SURVIVEReward: +1 REPUTATIONPenalty: DEATH

Elias stared.

"That's not a quest," he whispered.

"That's a threat."

SYSTEM RESPONSE: CORRECT.

He blinked.

"…You admit it?"

YES.

The beast roared.

The sound hit the hall like physical force.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Lanterns flickered.

Elias turned and ran.

The beast followed instantly.

The hall erupted into chaos.

Guards shouted.

Elders stood.

Elias screamed.

"I DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING YET!"

CORRECTION: YOU ARRIVED.

"That's not a crime!"

IT IS HERE.

The beast slammed into a pillar.

Wood shattered.

Elias barely dodged.

He slid under a table.

It broke instantly.

"WHY IS EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD FRAGILE?!"

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY IS DECORATIVE HERE.

"That's not reassuring!"

The beast turned its head toward him.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Like it already knew exactly where he was.

Elias froze.

"…Oh no."

The system spoke again.

ADDITIONAL ANALYSIS: YOU ARE OUTMATCHED.

"THANK YOU."

SUGGESTION: IMPROVISE.

"I AM IMPROVISING!"

INADEQUATELY.

The beast charged again.

Elias sprinted.

He barely dodged as the creature crashed through the hall, splintering beams, shaking the entire structure.

Outside, villagers screamed and scattered.

Elias burst through the doorway into daylight.

The beast followed.

The village itself panicked.

Floating lanterns shattered as the creature's movement disrupted them.

Elias looked around wildly.

"Nope. Nope. Nope. This is not happening!"

He grabbed a spear from a stunned guard mid-run.

He didn't know why.

Instinct.

The system paused.

INTERESTING.

Elias blinked mid-run.

"…What?"

YOU TOOK A WEAPON.

"I don't know how that happened!"

YOU ARE IMPROVING.

"That sounds sarcastic!"

IT IS NOT.

The beast roared again.

Closer now.

Elias turned.

And raised the spear.

His hands were shaking.

His breathing was uneven.

His brain was screaming.

But he didn't move.

"…Okay," he whispered. "Okay. I guess I'm doing this now."

The beast charged.

Elias braced himself.

The system spoke one last time.

NEW VARIABLE DETECTED.

Elias frowned.

"…What variable?"

USER IS NO LONGER ONLY PANICKING.

The beast lunged.

Elias swung.

Impact—

And everything went white again.
