Chapter 17 - Chapter 41: The Secret Beneath the Foundation

The change didn't arrive with noise or warning—it settled into the structure of Hell University like something ancient waking beneath the surface, something that had been buried for years finally beginning to breathe again, and as Zein Shoin walked through the corridor, she felt it immediately, a strange pressure in the air that didn't belong to anything normal, something heavy and unstable that made every step feel slightly off, as if the ground beneath her wasn't entirely solid anymore, while students around her continued their routines, laughing, talking, unaware that the foundation beneath them was shifting into something dangerous, something alive, and the worst part wasn't just the presence of it—it was the familiarity, the quiet, unsettling recognition in her chest that made it feel like this wasn't the first time she had felt something like this, even if her mind refused to give her a clear memory of it.

"You feel it," Ace Craige said as he stepped beside her, his voice low but certain, as if he had already confirmed what she was still trying to process.

Zein didn't look at him immediately.

"…yes," she replied, her voice steady but quieter than usual.

"This isn't structural damage," he said.

"I know," she answered.

Ace's gaze shifted slightly, scanning the hallway as another faint vibration passed through the floor beneath them, subtle enough that most people ignored it, but strong enough that both of them felt it clearly.

"It started this morning," he said.

Zein shook her head slightly.

"No… it didn't," she said.

Ace looked at her.

"…then when?" he asked.

Zein hesitated, her expression tightening as she tried to understand something she couldn't fully explain.

"…before that," she said slowly.

Ace's eyes narrowed.

"That's not possible," he replied.

"…I know," she said, "but it feels like it."

Another tremor ran through the ground, stronger this time, causing a few students to pause and look around nervously.

"That's not normal," Zein said.

"No," Ace replied, "it's not."

Zein crossed her arms slightly, her mind already moving ahead, analyzing, connecting patterns.

"…there's something under this place," she said.

Ace didn't argue.

"I know," he replied.

Zein turned to him sharply.

"…you knew?" she asked.

"I suspected," he said.

"And you didn't tell me?" she said.

"I didn't have confirmation," he replied calmly.

Zein exhaled sharply, frustration flickering across her expression.

"…what kind of suspicion?" she asked.

Ace glanced around briefly before lowering his voice.

"There's a restricted level beneath the university," he said.

Zein frowned immediately.

"That doesn't exist in any official record," she said.

"It wouldn't," he replied.

"…who built it?" she asked.

Ace's expression didn't change.

"The organization behind this place," he said.

Zein's voice dropped slightly.

"…what organization?" she asked.

Ace looked at her directly.

"The one you weren't supposed to find out about," he said.

Zein felt that strange familiarity again, stronger this time, like something in her mind was trying to surface but couldn't fully break through.

"…this doesn't make sense," she said.

"It will," he replied.

A stronger tremor hit suddenly, shaking the entire corridor.

Students gasped, some stepping back, others starting to panic.

"…this is getting worse," Zein said.

"Yes," Ace replied.

Zein's eyes hardened.

"…we need to see what's down there," she said.

Ace immediately shook his head.

"No," he said.

Zein turned toward him.

"…why not?" she asked.

"Because if you're right, you shouldn't go anywhere near it," he said.

Zein stepped closer, her voice lowering.

"…that's not your decision," she said.

"It is if it puts you at risk," he replied.

Zein's expression sharpened.

"…you don't get to control this," she said.

"I'm not controlling it," he said, "I'm stopping you."

Zein held his gaze, unflinching.

"…try," she said.

Ace didn't look away.

"I will," he replied.

Another violent tremor shook the building, stronger than before, causing a crack to form along the wall nearby.

Students started shouting, fear spreading quickly now.

Zein glanced toward the direction of the disturbance—

Then back at Ace.

"…this isn't stopping," she said.

"No," he replied.

"…and if we wait, it gets worse," she said.

"Yes," he agreed.

Zein took a step back—

Then turned toward the restricted corridor.

"…then we don't wait," she said.

Ace moved instantly, grabbing her wrist.

"You're not going alone," he said.

Zein didn't pull away this time.

"…I wasn't planning to," she replied.

Ace held her gaze for a second longer—

Then released her.

"…stay close," he said.

Zein nodded once.

"…always," she replied quietly.

And as they moved toward the hidden section of the university—

Neither of them said it out loud—

But both of them knew—

Whatever was waiting below—

Wasn't just a secret.

It was the beginning of the end.
