Chapter 13 - Chapter 3: The Decision to Survive

No one moved.

Takahashi's body—

What remained of it—

Didn't fall dramatically.

It separated.

Quietly.

Like the world had simply corrected a mistake.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unnatural.

No scream.

No reaction.

Because their minds hadn't caught up yet.

Ryuzen stood still.

Watching.

Not them—

Their behavior.

A small flame flickered in his hand.

Gray.

Unstable.

It twisted—

Collapsed—

Reformed.

Again.

Again.

As if something inside him was…

adjusting.

"…Takahashi…"

Yuna's voice broke.

But even she didn't move toward him.

Didn't dare.

Kanzaki's hands trembled—

Just slightly—

As she stared at the empty space where her device had been.

"…It absorbed it…"

Her voice was low.

"…Not destroyed…"

Pause.

"…Integrated."

Fushimi stepped back.

One step.

Then another.

"…This is wrong…"

His breathing changed.

Sharper.

Faster.

"…This isn't a target…"

Ryuzen took a step forward.

Slow.

Measured.

Everyone reacted instantly.

Weapons raised.

Aether surged.

"WAIT."

Kurose's voice cut through everything.

Cold.

Absolute.

No one moved.

Ryuzen stopped.

His head tilted slightly.

Observing.

Kurose stepped forward.

Not aggressively.

Not fearfully.

Carefully.

"…You're all doing it wrong."

Silence.

Yuna turned toward him.

"…Captain…?"

Kurose didn't look away from Ryuzen.

"…Every time you react…"

Pause.

"…it adapts."

Kanzaki's eyes widened.

"…That's why the flame—"

"Yes."

Kurose's voice stayed calm.

Too calm.

"…It's not copying."

A step.

Closer.

"…It's improving."

Silence deepened.

Ryuzen's gaze didn't change.

But the flame in his hand—

Stabilized.

Perfectly.

Yuna stepped back again.

"…No… no, that's not possible…"

Kanzaki spoke—

But her voice wasn't steady anymore.

"…If it can refine S-Rank output in real time…"

Pause.

"…then there's no upper limit."

No one argued.

Because they felt it.

That pressure.

Ryuzen moved again.

Faster.

Not attacking—

Closing distance.

"MOVE—!"

Yuna reacted first.

Too fast.

Too emotional.

She lunged.

Aether surged wildly around her.

"DON'T—"

Too late.

Ryuzen's head turned.

His body followed.

The movement—

Was already complete.

Yuna's attack—

Never reached him.

His hand was already there.

At her throat.

No force.

No struggle.

Just contact.

Her body lifted slightly.

Her eyes widened—

Air gone.

Movement locked.

"…Ca—"

Her voice failed.

Ryuzen stared at her.

Close.

Studying.

A faint distortion passed through his arm.

As if something was about to be—

Taken.

"NOW."

Kurose moved.

Not toward Ryuzen—

But toward Yuna.

A precise strike—

Not at the body—

At the arm.

Timing.

Perfect.

For a split second—

Ryuzen's grip loosened.

Not by force—

By interruption.

Yuna dropped.

Fushimi caught her instantly—

Pulling her back.

Everyone retreated.

Fast.

Controlled.

No one attacked.

No one tried.

Because now—

They understood.

Ryuzen didn't chase immediately.

He stood there.

Looking at his hand.

Where Yuna had been.

His fingers moved slightly.

As if recalling something.

Then—

A faint shift in his posture.

Processing.

Behind him—

The Abyss felt closer.

Alive.

Kurose didn't stop moving.

"Fall back."

No hesitation now.

No pride.

Only decision.

"We're not fighting it."

A pause.

"…We survive it."

No one argued.

Because Takahashi was gone.

And Yuna almost was.

Distance increased.

Step by step.

Controlled retreat.

Ryuzen watched.

Didn't rush.

Didn't react.

Just observed.

Then—

He raised his hand again.

Flame formed.

Stable.

Perfect.

Not distorted anymore.

Not incomplete.

Refined.

A whisper escaped his lips.

Broken.

Layered.

"…ad…apt…"

Silence swallowed the word.

And far behind—

For the first time—

The team truly understood—

This wasn't a battle.

It was evolution.

Further Ahead—

They didn't stop running.

Not immediately.

Even after the distance felt enough—

Even after the pressure faded—

No one said it.

But no one believed they were safe.

Only when Kurose raised his hand—

They stopped.

Silence returned.

But it wasn't the same silence.

This one—

Was heavy.

Yuna dropped to her knees.

Her breathing broke instantly.

Sharp.

Uneven.

Her hands clutched her throat—

As if it was still there.

"…I…"

Her voice didn't come out.

Fushimi stayed beside her.

Didn't speak.

Didn't try to comfort.

Because he didn't know how.

Kanzaki stood still.

Her eyes unfocused.

Not looking at anything—

But thinking.

Too much.

"…It wasn't replication…"

Her voice was low.

"…It was reconstruction."

No one responded.

Because Kurose wasn't listening.

He stood slightly ahead of them.

Back turned.

Looking into the darkness they came from.

His breathing was steady.

Too steady.

But inside—

Everything replayed.

Takahashi's attack.

Copied.

Improved.

Erased.

Yuna's mistake.

Her movement.

The timing.

And that moment—

When Ryuzen stopped.

Kurose's eyes narrowed slightly.

"That wasn't hesitation."

A pause.

"…That was interference."

Something inside him tightened.

Not fear.

Understanding.

He turned slightly.

Looking at the team.

Yuna still shaking.

Fushimi silent.

Kanzaki lost in thought.

"We lasted… because it allowed it."

The words were quiet.

But they landed heavily.

Kanzaki's head lifted.

"…Allowed?"

Kurose nodded once.

"If it wanted us dead…"

Pause.

"…we wouldn't be standing here."

Silence.

That truth settled deeper than fear.

Yuna's hands tightened.

"…Then what are we supposed to do…?"

No one had an answer.

For a moment—

Even Kurose didn't.

But hesitation didn't last.

It couldn't.

Because standing still meant death.

"…We move."

His voice was firm again.

Stable.

"Not randomly."

A step forward.

"We observe."

Another step.

"We survive."

His eyes hardened.

"And we don't make the same mistake twice."

Yuna slowly stood.

Still unstable—

But listening.

Kanzaki adjusted her glasses slightly.

Her mind already working again.

"…If it assimilated my device…"

Pause.

"…then it has enhanced perception now."

Fushimi exhaled slowly.

"…So hiding won't work either."

Kurose nodded.

"Then we stop thinking in terms of advantage."

Silence.

"…We think in terms of survival windows."

That changed everything.

Not how to win.

But how long to stay alive.

The team understood.

Without needing more explanation.

They began moving again.

Slower now.

More careful.

Every step measured.

Every sound controlled.

But something had changed.

Not just fear.

Awareness.

Far behind them—

Deep in the Abyss—

Something moved.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

But precise.

Ryuzen stood where they left him.

His gaze fixed in the direction they fled.

No emotion.

Only calculation.

His fingers moved slightly.

As if recalling a sensation.

Aether gathered again.

This time—

No distortion.

No instability.

A perfect flame formed.

Then—

It shifted.

Not just fire anymore.

Something deeper.

Refined.

A faint whisper escaped—

Layered.

Broken.

"…sur…vive…"

Silence consumed it.

And then—

He took a step forward.

Not chasing.

Following.
