Kai was at his third food stall when he saw her.
He recognized the yukata before he recognized her — the dark blue fabric with white peonies, the cream obi, the long sleeves.
Things that in another context would have simply been familiar.
Then he looked up and processed that the person inside the yukata was Serah.
He stopped.
Not dramatically.
He just stopped what he was doing — which was bringing something to his mouth — and didn't continue the movement for approximately three seconds.
Okay.
That's...
Okay.
Serah's silver markings glowed with the light of the colored lanterns above — red, blue, yellow — casting onto the dark fabric and the dark skin and the hair with silver strands that now seemed part of the place's lighting.
Serah reached him.
Looked at him.
Waited.
Kai looked her up and down — not the usual tactical analysis, but something different that required an extra second of processing — and then looked her in the eyes.
"It looks good on you," he said.
Serah processed that.
The markings pulsed intensely for exactly one second.
Then stabilized into that warm glow that lately only appeared at specific moments.
"Just good?" she said.
"Really good."
Serah looked at him a moment longer.
"Alright," she said.

[GarcíaFTW: SERAH IN A YUKATA]
[NocheEterna99: "it looks good on you" "just good?" "really good" — KAI BEING KAI]
[StreamerHunter: the markings pulsed for ONE SECOND. Just one. But we all saw it.]
[xSorinx: Kai took three seconds to process the image. For Kai that's an eternity.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) really good ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)]

They walked through the fair together.
Not with mission purpose.
Just walking.
Kai took her to the stall where he'd tried something fried that he recognized from some summer fair — not identical but close enough — and gave it to her to try without explaining where the familiarity came from.
Serah chewed it with the concentration of someone evaluating a new experience.
"Is it from this world or yours?" she asked.
"In my world there's something similar." Kai took another. "In my world we called it churro."
"Churro?"
"With sugar."
Serah looked at hers. Took another bite.
"It's acceptable," she said.
"That's the best compliment you've given to something that isn't combat."
The markings pulsed.
"That's not true."
"When did you say something better?"
Serah looked at him.
"When I said your fur was comfortable."
Kai looked at her.
"That has nothing to do with food. Besides, I said that."
"About me."
Pause.
"That's logical," Kai said with a resigned smile.
---
[GarcíaFTW: SERAH COUNTED "YOUR FUR WAS COMFORTABLE" AS A COMPLIMENT SHE RECEIVED]
[NocheEterna99: technically not wrong]
[StreamerHunter: "that's logical" — Kai accepted the argument. Completely resigned.]
[xSorinx: they're eating churros at a fantasy fair. This is the world now.]
[Pedro_Sierra: (≧▽≦) Kai and Serah's first date (≧▽≦)]

The Ferris wheel was working.
Not empty like before — with people. Families from neighboring villages, some hunters, the women of Mirfeld who had decided the fair was still theirs even if it had been planned by someone who was no longer there.
Renne saw them approaching and gestured to the empty gondola with the motion of someone giving away something valuable.
They got on.
The wheel carried them slowly upward — the slow pace of these things, enough for the village to grow smaller below and the sky of Aethon, which had more stars than Kai had seen in any sky of his world, to become more present above.
Mirfeld at night from above was different from Mirfeld by day.
The colored lanterns from above were just light — red, blue, yellow mixing in the movement of people among the stalls.
The carousel turning.
The place where Jameson's house had been, still with embers dying slowly.
Serah looked down.
"The women who were pregnant," she said.
"They were talking among themselves before we left. About how they'll care for the babies. Who will help with which one. How they'll organize the village." She paused.
"They were giving each other advice."
Kai looked at her.
"And that made you think about something?"
Serah took a moment.
"That I'm urging you to have offspring — or rather, babies — but... I don't know anything about that," she said.
"About raising. About caring." The markings pulsed irregularly.
"What I know is surviving. Fighting. Assessing threats." She looked at her own hands.
"I don't know if that's enough to be... that."
Kai reached out his hand.
Took Serah's — both of them, his on top of hers — and waited for her to look at him.
"Don't worry about that," he said.
"It's a valid worry."
"It is. And when that time comes, we both learn." He paused.
"Besides, the first time it's not that easy to get pregnant. Or so I think."
Serah looked at him.
"You think?"
"I'm not an expert in primordial biology."
The markings pulsed.
And then Serah did something Kai hadn't seen her do since they'd been together.
She laughed.
Short.
Genuine.
The kind of sound that comes out when something is absurd in the right way.
And before Kai could fully register what was happening, Serah leaned in and kissed him — not the long, gradual kiss from the dungeon recovery room.
A shorter one.
More direct.
The kind of kiss you give when a specific phrase lands exactly where it needed to land.

[NocheEterna99: SERAH LAUGHED]
[GarcíaFTW: FIRST TIME SINCE I'VE BEEN WATCHING THE STREAM FROM DAY ONE.]
[StreamerHunter: and then she kissed him. NO WARNING.]
[xSorinx: on the Ferris wheel. With the lanterns below. With five million viewers.]

The wheel came down.
Serah looked at Kai when they touched the ground.
"I want to do it now," she said.
Kai looked at her for a second.
"Not here."
Serah looked at him.
"Where?"
Kai nodded toward the edge of the village — toward the houses Renne had mentioned before, the one they'd been offered to stay in.
Serah followed the direction.
Then looked back at Kai.
The silver markings flared.
