Luna's Awakening
Her words trembled, barely beyond a whisper. What did he mean? The sound cracked like old wood.
Water clung to her hair as Lucas swept it aside. Softness lived in his fingers, slow like mist. As if one wrong move could shatter her.
"Five years ago, I didn't betray you," he said again. "Your father wanted you gone because of old blood ties. You carry the Luna line from your mother's side. The real power that my father feared. I pushed you away to keep the council from killing you."
Something shifted inside Scarlett as she looked his way. Her breath caught, sharp. The rage that once burned now sat like a stone too large to carry.
"You could have told me," she whispered.
That time I gave it a go. Off you went, though, before the words left my mouth, said Lucas. Tightness in his face showed how much it stuck with him.
A sharp sound bounced through Rachel's voice, but twisted. Gone was the warmth of old hugs, replaced by something cold. Nearby, maybe just around the corner, that laughter cut again. Once, she'd held on like family meant forever. Now it stung.
"Touching story," Rachel called out. "But it changes nothing. The Shadow Pack alpha is coming for both of you. And I get my cut of the territory."
Alex hovered slightly to the back of her. Dust clung to his crisp shirt, odd against the mess of grime and gore around them. Regret never touched his face. Quiet settled on him instead, steady as ever.
Tears stung Scarlett's eyes. Why had he done it? She wondered if Alex was, of all people, the one she'd counted on above anyone else.
"Orders," he said simply. "Lucas needed to protect the pack. And you."
Out of nowhere, laughter burst through the woods. Ethan's voice cracked the quiet. From between the trunks came the beta, moving slowly beside his alpha. A hunger sat in the large one's stance, sharp and restless. Yellow lit his gaze where the shadows stretched thin.
"Enough talk," the Shadow Pack alpha growled. "The girl dies. The future alpha dies. This territory becomes ours."
On unsteady limbs, Lucas pulled Scarlett upright. Leaning into his frame, she hated how much support she needed. The tremble in her muscles refused to fade, yet something deeper woke her up. Not just alive, fiercer.
Emily moved between them and the enemy. "Wait. Scarlett is the true Luna. Killing her means you break an ancient pack law. The moon won't forgive that."
A moment passed before the leader of the Shadow Pack spoke again. A trace of uncertainty showed in his expression.
Rachel stepped ahead, curls swaying with each move. A finger shot out toward Scarlett, voice sharp. Blood streaked down Scarlett's arm, fresh and red. "Weak," Rachel called, eyes locked. The air tightened. "End it," she said, not loud, but clear.
Into her lungs went air, slow and heavy. Fire lit in her shoulder, yet beneath it stirred a different feeling entirely. Toward Lucas, warmth rose unexpectedly, insistently. As if some hidden part of her, feral and sure, finally knew his name.
"You lied to me," she said to Rachel. Her voice grew steadier. "You used my pain for your own gain."
Rachel shrugged. "Family business. You were always too soft."
Holding her close, Lucas left his hand resting at Scarlett's side. Warmth came off him in steady waves, a quiet presence she couldn't ignore. Yet every part of that comfort made her want to pull away.
"We don't have to do this," Lucas said to the Shadow Pack alpha. "Walk away. No more blood today."
Fangs bared, the large wolf growled low. Peace has slipped away. There is no chance now
A blur of motion came first. Then the massive black shape lunged forward, closing the gap quickly. Its claws stretched ahead, sharp and open. Jaws tensed, built for ripping.
Back went Lucas, moving slowly, placing Scarlett aside. A shift began until her fingers curled round his wrist.
She shook her head. Not alone. Side by side, that way we move
Now the change felt smoother somehow. Pain faded when the wolf claimed her body. Fur sprouted, deep brown like wet earth. Eyes glowed sharp green under moonlight. Standing beside Lucas's large tanfurred wolf, she matched his stance without a sound.
A single motion carried them forward. As if every moment before had led to this exact second. The blow landed on Lucas first, yet Scarlett dropped fast, slicing into the alpha of the Shadow Pack at its flank.
Fresh howls cracked through the evening. Right there among them stood Emily, no longer watching. Her compact wolf darted like she thought itself. A slick twist from her sent one of Ethan's pack stumbling sideways.
Rachel started to flee, yet Alex grabbed her arm. "Finished," he said, voice low. "Wrong choice of allies."
A sudden shift in pace caught the air. Power surged in Scarlett's wolf, raw and sharp. Each meeting with the rival alpha lit a trail beneath her skin. It wasn't only fury burning there. A pull, older than thought. As if each snap of teeth, each narrow escape wove her fate tighter with Lucas, unseen threads tugging at time.
Side by side, Lucas watched where she couldn't see. He stayed close behind her when it mattered. Their wolves matched each step without thinking. Like breathing. Easy. Normal.
Staggering sideways, the Shadow Pack leader dropped to two legs again, air tearing from his lungs. A line of red crawled down his skin, tracing bone. That dual impact had knocked him loose from the fight.
"This isn't finished," he spat. "Your pack is still split. Ethan has plans of his own."
A snarl bent Ethan's features. His eyes locked on Lucas, burning. The words came out sharp: I was meant to lead. You took what's mine
Faster than a breath, Ethan moved the blade out, aimed at Lucas. No one had time to shout, let alone act.
Out of nowhere, Scarlett moved. Half a step backward, then straight into Ethan. Her arm got nicked by the knife anyway. Pain flared up fast, yet she kept going.
Down went Ethan, slammed by Lucas in a single hard hit. Rolling across the dirt, they twisted together. Punches came fast from both sides.
Out came Emily, stepping quickly, holding Ethan down. "Stop now," she said to the elderly man. "This ends here."
Backward he stepped, the big wolf from the Shadow Pack. Behind him trailed his group. Into the forest shadows they slipped, silent as breath.
A hush settled at the bridge. Breath came hard, loud. Nearby, the current pushed through the dark.
Down went Scarlett, onto her knees. Dizziness swirled back in, fueled by too much blood lost. Then Lucas suddenly closed. Into his arms she sank, lifted slowly, like something fragile.
"You are losing a lot of blood," he told her. His words came out tight, edged with fear.
Up above, her gaze met his. Wild strands of sandy hair fell across his forehead. Sharp blue eyes locked onto hers. That familiar face once sent her pulse leaping during childhood days.
"Why does it feel like this?" she whispered. "Even after everything."
Lucas brushed her cheek with his thumb. "Because you're my mate. My Luna. I've known since we were young. The bond never broke. I just tried to hide it to save you."
A quiet drop rolled down her cheek just then. Not everything stayed locked inside anymore, some of it began to split open. Beneath the weight sat something soft again. What once believed without question had been hidden too long.
Kneeling close, Emily ripped a cloth from her sleeve. A piece of fabric went straight onto Scarlett's cut.
"You two need to talk. Really talk," Emily said softly. "But first, we get you healed. The pack needs its Luna back."
Rachel stayed back, just steps off. Not close, but near enough. Alex kept hold of her arm light, like holding air. Her shape seemed narrower suddenly. Confidence had slipped out somehow.
Rachel spoke up, her words trembling like they had a mind of their own. A quiet fear slipped into her question: what would become of her?
Scarlett met her cousin's eyes. "You chose your path. Live with it."
Still holding on, Lucas lifted Scarlett to her feet. Around her shoulders his arm lingered, firm, unwilling to slip away. Something hummed in the air now brighter than before. Heat built where their bodies nearly touched. Even the ache, even the red stains can't dull it.
Back they moved, step by step, away from the edge. Quiet had settled again among the trunks and roots. Light slipped down in scattered bits where the leaves parted.
Out of nowhere, while they were walking, a noise cut through the air. Faroff howling. These weren't sounds that were welcomed.
Lucas tensed. "More trouble coming."
Over by his side stood Scarlett, close now. The green of her eyes tightened on what lay beyond the sky's edge.
Still, the battle for the pack pressed on without rest. Her heartbeat wavered, now unclear which name it beat for.
