Chapter 110: The Return of the Shadow

August 1835 – Lahore

The journey back from France had been long, but Nau Nihal Singh returned to Lahore with quiet triumph.

His delegation arrived at the capital under the cover of night to avoid drawing too much attention from the court factions. Only a small escort accompanied him — Gurbaaz Singh and a handful of trusted officers. The full details of the agreement with France would remain secret for now, known only to Maharaja Ranjit Singh and a few select advisors.

The next morning, Nau Nihal was summoned to a private audience with the Lion of Punjab.

Ranjit Singh sat in his private chambers, looking frailer than when Nau Nihal had left, but his one good eye still burned with sharp intelligence. He motioned for his grandson to sit.

"Tell me everything," the Maharaja said.

Nau Nihal spoke clearly and concisely, detailing the negotiations in Paris. He described the French interest in countering British power in India, the technical exchanges on weapons, and the preliminary agreement for military cooperation and trade privileges.

Ranjit Singh listened without interruption, then allowed a rare smile. "You have done what few could, my grandson. France as a counterweight to the Company… this changes the balance. The British will think twice before pressing Sindh too hard."

Nau Nihal bowed. "The agreement is secret for now. We will receive their technical experts and weapon designs within the year. In return, we offer favorable trade terms in Sindh and Punjab. It is not a full alliance, but it is a strong beginning."

The Maharaja nodded. "Keep it hidden from the Dogra and Sandhawalia factions for as long as possible. They would try to use it for their own gain. Continue your work on the new cavalry unit. The Khalsa must grow stronger in secret as well as in the open."

Later that day, Nau Nihal met with Gurbaaz Singh in a secure chamber.

"The research wing must accelerate," Nau Nihal ordered. "Incorporate whatever the French send us. Improve the revolvers. Develop better rifles and artillery. The new cavalry under Jawahar must be the best in the empire."

Gurbaaz bowed. "It will be done. The Raaz research wing is already expanding in secrecy. We have recruited several innovative armorers and engineers who are loyal only to you."

Nau Nihal placed a hand on his shoulder. "This is vital, Gurbaaz. The British will not stop. The court factions will continue their games. We must prepare the Khalsa for what is coming."

In the grand durbar hall the following week, the court gathered for a formal session.

Ranjit Singh announced the successful return of the delegation, praising Nau Nihal's efforts without revealing the full details of the French agreement.

"The Prince has strengthened our position in the world," the Maharaja said. "We will not yield Sindh to the British. We will hold what we have won."

The Dogra faction applauded loudly, seeing opportunity for expansion. The Sandhawalia Sardars were more cautious but offered measured support. Prince Kharak Singh watched Nau Nihal with a complex expression — part admiration, part calculation.

After the session, Raja Dhian Singh Dogra approached Nau Nihal privately.

"You have done great things for the empire," the Dogra leader said. "The Maharaja trusts you. Perhaps we can work together to strengthen the Khalsa's future."

Nau Nihal replied carefully. "I serve only the Khalsa, Raja ji. Not any one faction."

The Sandhawalia Sardars sent similar overtures later that day. Nau Nihal remained neutral, walking the delicate line between the two powerful groups.

That night, Nau Nihal stood on a balcony overlooking Lahore with Jawahar.

"The court is a battlefield of its own," Jawahar said. "The Dogras and Sandhawalias circle you like wolves."

Nau Nihal stared at the stars. "I know. But the real war is still on the frontier. Dost Mohammad Khan waits in Kabul. The British press on Sindh. We must prepare for both while navigating the court."

Jawahar grinned. "Then let the Shadow Blade do what he does best."

Nau Nihal touched the hilt of his sword.

The delegation to France had been a success.

The new cavalry unit was forming.

The empire was evolving.

But the greatest challenges still lay ahead.
