Chapter 20 - Transformation

The rain had not stopped.

It fell in a steady, cold rhythm over the broken campus, washing away blood, dirt, and whatever remained of the old world. The storm no longer felt like weather—it felt like a curtain separating what used to be from what now existed.

Inside the gymnasium, most people were trying to rest. Some slept. Others cried quietly. A few just stared into nothingness, their minds unable to process everything that had happened in a single day.

But Ash Dante Corleone wasn't inside.

He stood just outside the building, beneath a broken overhang that shielded him slightly from the rain. His dark coat clung lightly to his body, damp at the edges, while his sharp eyes scanned the silent campus.

The air had changed.

It wasn't just the smell of blood or death anymore.

It was something deeper.

Something heavier.

Ash had felt it the moment he stepped outside.

The world… was evolving.

And so was he.

Behind him, a small group of people stood at a distance. They didn't dare get too close, but they also didn't leave. These were the ones who had chosen—consciously or not—to stay near him.

Not because he asked them to.

But because they believed he could keep them alive.

Fear created followers faster than trust ever could.

Ash didn't turn around, but he knew they were there.

He could hear their breathing.

Their shifting footsteps.

Their hesitation.

And among them—

One presence stood out.

A girl stepped forward slowly, her shoes lightly splashing against shallow puddles as she approached him.

Her name was Elena Carter.

She wasn't the strongest among the survivors. Not even close. But unlike many others, she hadn't run when things got bad. She hadn't hidden behind others either.

She stayed.

Even when she was scared.

Ash finally spoke, his voice calm, steady.

"You're still here."

Elena swallowed before answering.

"Yes."

Her voice trembled slightly, but she didn't back away.

"I said I'd follow you."

Ash turned his head slightly, just enough to glance at her.

Her clothes were still damp. Her hair clung to her face. Her eyes showed fear—but also something else.

Determination.

That was rare.

Ash faced forward again.

"Do you trust me?"

The question came out simple.

Direct.

But its weight was heavy.

Elena froze for a moment.

In this new world, trust wasn't something you gave easily.

Trust could get you killed.

But after everything she had seen—after watching Ash fight, watching him survive, watching him move like someone completely different from everyone else—

She nodded.

"Yes."

Ash didn't react immediately.

Instead, he raised his hand slowly.

"Then don't resist."

Before she could ask anything—

Ash bit into his thumb.

Blood surfaced instantly.

But it wasn't normal.

It was darker.

Thicker.

Almost… alive.

Elena's eyes widened slightly.

"What are you—"

Ash stepped forward and pressed his bleeding thumb against her forehead.

"Blood Oath."

For a split second—

Nothing happened.

Then—

Everything changed.

Elena's body stiffened violently.

Her eyes snapped wide open.

And then she screamed.

"AHHH—!"

Her body collapsed to her knees as a violent surge of energy exploded through her system.

The people behind them panicked.

Some stepped back immediately.

Others stared in horror.

But Ash didn't move.

Didn't help.

Didn't stop it.

He simply watched.

Because this wasn't something that could be interrupted.

This was transformation.

A faint crimson glow spread across Elena's skin.

Her veins became visible, pulsing with unnatural intensity.

Her breathing turned chaotic—fast, uneven, desperate.

Her hands clawed at the ground as if trying to hold onto something real.

The pain—

It was overwhelming.

It felt like her entire body was being torn apart and rebuilt at the same time.

Her mind screamed for it to stop.

But something deeper inside her…

Accepted it.

Then suddenly—

Silence.

The glow faded.

Her breathing slowed.

And for a moment, everything was still.

Slowly…

Elena lifted her head.

Her eyes—

Had changed.

A faint red shimmer lingered within them.

Not bright.

Not obvious.

But there.

Permanent.

She looked at Ash.

And without thinking—

"Master…"

The word slipped out naturally.

Instinctively.

Ash's eyes narrowed slightly.

He felt it.

A connection.

A thread linking them together.

It wasn't control.

It wasn't force.

It was… alignment.

Ash exhaled slowly.

"So that's how it works…"

He could feel her presence now.

Not physically.

But internally.

Like a faint signal always there.

Elena stood up slowly.

Her movements were different now.

Sharper.

More controlled.

More… efficient.

"I feel… stronger," she said quietly, looking at her hands.

Ash nodded.

"You are."

Then he turned away.

"Get used to it."

Behind them, the others watched in silence.

No one spoke.

No one questioned.

Because what they had just witnessed—

Wasn't normal.

Ash didn't just fight monsters.

He created something new.

And that terrified them.
