Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: LEVEL TWO

Chapter 11: LEVEL TWO

The notification came at 3:47 AM ship time.

I was alone in my quarters—had been for hours, practicing absorption on the trace residue from our temporal jumps. The Waverider leaked chronal energy the way old houses leaked heat, and most of it pooled in the spaces no one used. Storage compartments. Maintenance corridors. The gap between my wall and the hull.

[XP THRESHOLD REACHED]

[LEVEL UP: 1 → 2]

[TITLE UPDATED: TEMPORAL ANOMALY → CHRONO-INITIATE]

[+3 STAT POINTS AVAILABLE]

[NEW ABILITIES UNLOCKED]

The words hung in the darkness of my quarters, blue light painting the ceiling. I sat on the edge of my bed, breathing slowly, letting the moment settle.

Level 2. Finally.

It had taken—what, eight days? Ten? Time moved strangely when you were jumping between centuries. But the progression felt earned. Every scrap of residual energy. Every trace left behind by temporal friction. Every moment I'd carved out for quiet practice.

[DISPLAYING ABILITY UNLOCKS...]

[CHECKPOINT ESTABLISHMENT (ACTIVE)]

[— COST: 50 ✧]

[— CREATES PERSONAL RESPAWN POINT]

[— MAXIMUM CHECKPOINTS: 2 (WITH CURRENT CS)]

[— NOTE: ORIGIN CHECKPOINT DOES NOT COUNT AGAINST LIMIT]

[MINOR TEMPORAL MANIPULATION (ACTIVE)]

[— COST: 25 ✧ PER USE]

[— ALLOWS SMALL TIMELINE ADJUSTMENTS]

[— LIMITED TO PERSONAL SCOPE]

[— COOLDOWN: 24 HOURS]

The checkpoint ability was the prize. The Origin point—1975 Norway, the storage room where I'd died—was useful but dangerous. Respawning there meant arriving two hours after my first death, in an active combat zone, with no guarantee the team would find me before Savage's forces did.

A second checkpoint changed everything. A safe location. A fallback position. The difference between "I can survive death" and "I can survive death and actually recover."

[STAT POINT ALLOCATION RECOMMENDED]

[CURRENT STATS:]

[— TEMPORAL AUTHORITY: 10]

[— CHRONO-STABILITY: 5]

[— ANACHRONISM AFFINITY: 5]

[— ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITY: 3]

[— TEMPORAL PRESENCE: 5]

Three points. Multiple options.

I could dump everything into Temporal Authority—push toward the threshold for Territory Annexation. But that was thinking too far ahead. I didn't have a territory to annex yet, and the resources for annexation were measured in hundreds of credits I hadn't earned.

Chrono-Stability mattered more right now. Each point increased my respawn limit and improved my resistance to timeline rejection. The meta-knowledge I carried made me an aberration—a consciousness that didn't belong in this reality. Higher stability meant lower risk of the universe eventually deciding to delete me.

[ALLOCATING STAT POINTS...]

[— +1 TEMPORAL AUTHORITY (10 → 11)]

[— +2 CHRONO-STABILITY (5 → 7)]

[ALLOCATION COMPLETE]

[DERIVED STATS UPDATED:]

[— TERRITORY SLOTS: 1]

[— RESPAWN POINTS: 1 → 2 (ROUNDED FROM 1.4)]

[— DETECTION RADIUS: 500 → 550 YEARS]

Two respawn points. The checkpoint ability was immediately relevant now.

I pulled up the absorption practice log. The efficiency had been climbing steadily—47% in my last session, then 49%, now showing 52% as my base rate. Level 2 included a passive boost to Anachronism Affinity processing, apparently.

[ABSORPTION EFFICIENCY: 52% (BASE) + 8% (LEVEL BONUS) = 60%]

Sixty percent. I was capturing more than half of everything I touched now. The waste was still significant, but manageable. Sustainable.

This is what progress looks like, I thought. Not dramatic battles or clever schemes. Just incremental improvement, session after session, until the numbers add up to something real.

The interface displayed my progression path—a roadmap of future unlocks.

[LEVEL 3: TERRITORY PREVIEW — Scan anomaly sites for annexation viability]

[LEVEL 4: AGENT CONTRACTS — Bind willing subjects to Host authority]

[LEVEL 5: TIMELINE ANNEXATION — Claim resolved anomalies as territories]

[LEVEL 7: CHECKPOINT NETWORK — Establish linked checkpoint systems]

[LEVEL 10: BUREAU INTERFACE BASIC — Access Time Bureau equivalent systems]

Level 5 was the real milestone. Annexation would let me claim the aftermath of the Vandal Savage resolution—transform the end of Season 1 into my first territory. From there, everything else became possible.

But Level 5 required 5,000 XP. I had 500. The math was depressing but not impossible.

Ten times what I've earned so far. Maybe twenty more missions, if the yields stay consistent. Forty if they don't.

Patience. The same lesson the system kept teaching, the same approach I'd been using since the first death.

I stood, stretched, felt the new stats settle into whatever metaphysical framework made the system function. The air in my quarters tasted slightly different—charged, like the moment before a thunderstorm. My connection to the timeline had deepened. I could sense the Waverider's position in the temporal zone as a faint pressure against my awareness.

[SYSTEM NOTE: SENSORY ENHANCEMENT PROPORTIONAL TO HOST LEVEL]

[CURRENT PERCEPTION: BASIC TEMPORAL AWARENESS]

[ENHANCED PERCEPTION UNLOCKS: LEVEL 10]

More carrots. More reasons to keep climbing.

I sat back down, pulled up my resource totals, and started planning.

[CURRENT RESOURCES:]

[— TEMPORAL CREDITS: 0 ⧖]

[— CHRONO-ESSENCE: 43 ✧]

[— AUTHORITY POINTS: 0 ♔]

Forty-three essence. The checkpoint would cost fifty. I needed seven more—maybe two sessions of careful absorption, or one lucky proximity event.

The Norway mission had taught me something about the system's resource model. Death-adjacent situations generated more energy. Combat. Danger. The moments when timelines hung in the balance.

Ironic. The more I risk, the faster I grow. But if I grow fast enough, the risks become manageable.

The circular logic was almost elegant.

Gideon's voice broke through my planning: "All crew members, Captain Hunter requests your presence on the bridge. A significant temporal anomaly has been detected."

Another mission. Another opportunity.

I dismissed the interface, checked my appearance in the wall's reflective surface, and headed for the door.

[SYSTEM STATUS:]

[LEVEL: 2 — CHRONO-INITIATE]

[XP: 0/1,000 (NEW THRESHOLD)]

[STAT POINTS: 0]

[NEXT UNLOCK: LEVEL 3 — TERRITORY PREVIEW]

Level 2. Real progress.

Now to turn progress into infrastructure.
