Chapter 42 : Phase Two
The gym was empty at 6 AM—just me and Sugar and the kind of silence that existed between people who'd moved past the need for constant conversation. He stood in the center of the ring, arms crossed, watching me warm up with the critical eye of someone who'd trained hundreds of fighters and could spot weakness from across a room.
"You're favoring your left," he said.
"Old habit."
"Bad habit. Fix it or I'll fix it for you."
I adjusted my stance, distributing weight evenly, and resumed the footwork drills he'd assigned. Three months of training had transformed my combat capabilities from theoretical knowledge into practical skill, but Sugar still saw things I missed. That was why I kept coming back.
[HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT: Level 9][Progress to Level 10: 73%][Note: Diminishing returns detected from repetitive training][Recommendation: Novel challenges required for continued advancement]
The system confirmed what Sugar had been telling me for weeks. I was hitting a ceiling—the point where controlled training couldn't push me further. Real growth would require real threats, real stakes, the kind of pressure that couldn't be simulated in a gym.
"You're fighting the limit," Sugar said, as if reading my thoughts. "I've seen it before. Fighters who plateau because they're too careful, too controlled. They learn to the edge of comfort and then they stop."
"What's the solution?"
"Fight something real. Put yourself in situations where failure isn't acceptable. Your body learns faster when your life depends on the lesson."
Easy for him to say. He didn't know about the conspiracy hunting Michael, the threat of Carla's arrival, the cascade of violence that Season 2 would bring. Real stakes were coming whether I wanted them or not.
But maybe that was the point. Maybe the system was preparing me for exactly what was ahead.
After training, I retreated to my apartment and pulled up the full Phase 2 interface for the first time since achieving calibration. The system had offered expanded capabilities as a reward for passing the threshold, but I'd been too focused on the intervention to explore them properly.
Now, with the immediate crisis resolved, it was time to understand what I'd unlocked.
[PHASE 2 STATUS: ACTIVE][Expanded Capabilities Available]
NETWORK UPGRADE:- Maximum Connections: 3 → 6- Range Extension: 1km → 2km- Duration Increase: 90sec → 180sec
TALENT SYSTEM UPGRADE:- Talent Slots: 1 → 4- Copy Efficiency: +15%- Partial Copy Available (reduced effectiveness, faster acquisition)
ARSENAL EXPANSION:- Third Item Slot: Available- Unlock Progress: 67%
The numbers were impressive. Six Network connections meant I could coordinate with the entire team simultaneously—Michael, Sam, Fiona, plus reserves. Four talent slots meant I could hold multiple copied abilities instead of choosing between them. The Arsenal expansion promised another tool I couldn't yet identify.
But numbers were just numbers. The real question was how to use them.
I started cataloging potential talent sources.
Michael Westen's tactical genius would require two slots—his ability was too complex to compress into a single copy. But having even a fraction of his strategic thinking would transform my operational capabilities. The challenge was observation time. Talent Copy required extended close proximity, watching the target use their ability under pressure. Michael didn't let people watch him think.
Sam Axe's networking intuition was more accessible. I'd seen him work rooms, build connections, extract information from people who didn't realize they were giving it. One slot would capture most of it. And Sam had already proven he'd work with me on operations Michael didn't know about.
Fiona's weapons intuition I already had. But the system noted that re-copying a talent at higher phases could improve effectiveness—60% might become 75% or 80% with a Phase 2 copy.
And then there was Carla.
The conspiracy's handler was coming to Miami—I remembered that much from the show, even if the details were degrading. She was a master manipulator, someone who could read people and situations with uncanny accuracy and bend them toward outcomes she wanted. Copying that ability would be dangerous—it would require getting close to her, staying close long enough for the system to work, and doing it without her realizing what I was.
But the payoff...
If I could copy Carla's manipulation instinct, I'd have a tool that worked on the conspiracy from the inside. A way to see their moves before they made them, to anticipate their tactics and prepare countermeasures. The most dangerous talent available was also potentially the most useful.
[TALENT CATALOG: Updated][Michael Westen — Tactical Genius: 2 slots required, high difficulty][Sam Axe — Networking Intuition: 1 slot, medium difficulty][Fiona Glenanne — Weapons Intuition (upgrade): 1 slot, low difficulty][Carla (unknown surname) — Manipulation Instinct: 2 slots, extreme difficulty]
Four slots. Four potential copies. Choices that would shape my capabilities for the rest of this conflict.
I didn't have to decide immediately. Carla hadn't arrived yet, and I didn't know how the changed timeline would affect her approach. Better to wait, gather information, and make informed decisions rather than rushing into copies I might regret.
Sugar found me in the gym's back office that afternoon, reviewing training schedules and pretending I wasn't deep in strategic planning.
"You're still here." It wasn't a question.
"Thinking."
"Dangerous habit." He settled into the chair across from me, groaning slightly as aging joints protested the motion. "I was the same way at your age. Always thinking three moves ahead, planning for contingencies that hadn't happened yet."
"Did it help?"
"Sometimes. Other times it made me miss what was right in front of me." He pulled out a water bottle and took a long drink. "Navy taught me to plan. Life taught me to adapt. You need both, but too much of either will kill you."
We sat in comfortable silence for a while. The gym was busier now—mid-afternoon regulars working through their routines, the rhythmic thump of punching bags and the clatter of weights providing ambient soundtrack.
"I was in Somalia in '93," Sugar said eventually. "Part of an operation that went sideways in ways no one predicted. We had plans—good plans, the kind that accounted for every variable we could imagine. Then reality happened, and the plans stopped mattering."
"What did you do?"
"Adapted. Improvised. Made decisions in the moment based on what was actually happening instead of what was supposed to happen." He looked at me with the direct intensity that made him such an effective trainer. "That's what you're going to need to do. Whatever you're planning for, whatever threat you're preparing to face—it won't go the way you expect. It never does."
"I'm starting to understand that."
"Good." He stood, wincing at his knees. "Now get back in the ring. You're not done for the day."
I followed him back to the training area, feeling the weight of the conversation settle into my understanding. Sugar didn't know about the system or the intervention or the timeline I'd changed. But his advice was exactly what I needed to hear.
Plans were useful. Preparations were necessary. But when the moment came, the only thing that mattered was the ability to adapt.
[SKILL PROGRESS UPDATE][Hand-to-Hand Combat: Level 9 → Level 9 (78% to 10)][Training session complete — novel challenge recommended]
The system echoed Sugar's assessment. I was approaching a ceiling that training alone couldn't break. Real stakes would be required to push through.
Carla was coming. The conspiracy was adapting. The timeline I remembered was dissolving into something unpredictable.
The stakes I needed were coming whether I wanted them or not.
That night, I reviewed my resources one final time.
Four talent slots, currently one occupied. Six Network connections, currently untested at full capacity. Three Arsenal items, with a third slot approaching unlock. Skills that had reached the point where only real combat could advance them further.
And a team that had accepted me—conditionally, suspiciously, but accepted nonetheless.
[SYSTEM STATUS: Phase 2 Active][Total Skill Levels: 94][Phase 3 Threshold: 100][Projected Timeline to Threshold: 2-3 weeks with active operations]
I was six skill levels away from Phase 3, whatever that would bring. The intervention had cost me my foreknowledge, but it had also accelerated my development—the high-stakes multiplier had pushed multiple skills forward simultaneously.
The trade-off was becoming clear. Certainty for capability. A roadmap for the strength to navigate without one.
I'd made the right choice. I believed that more with every passing day.
But the universe had a way of testing beliefs, and mine were about to face their greatest challenge yet.
Somewhere in Virginia, Carla was reading a file about Michael Westen's recent operations. Somewhere in that file was a note about an unknown associate who'd appeared in the team's orbit and demonstrated capabilities that didn't match his background.
She'd be curious. She'd be cautious. And eventually, she'd come to Miami to see for herself what kind of asset I might be—or what kind of threat I might represent.
When she arrived, I'd need every advantage Phase 2 could provide.
Four talent slots. The most dangerous copy I could imagine was also the most useful.
The question was whether I'd have the courage to attempt it when the moment came.
