The SGC briefing room at 0834 had the specific quality of pre-brief stillness the room acquired only when Hammond had cleared his calendar for ninety minutes and the room was waiting for a conversation Hammond had not been told the agenda of.
I had selected the SGC briefing register deliberately.
The SRD office would have produced a different conversation. The SRD office was my room. The SGC briefing room was the room where Earth conducted its formal diplomatic intake. Bra'tac would deliver in a register the room called for, and the room I had chosen was the room that called for the elder's formal Jaffa register.
The table was the original 1996 conference table — Hammond's father-in-law's table, donated to the SGC at Hammond's establishment of formal-protocol architecture in 1997. The wood-grain ran east-to-west. The table caught the overhead fluorescents at the angle the architectural-millwright had built into the surface.
Walter at the recording console at the table's foot. The console was on. The archive was active.
Bra'tac entered at 0856 in formal Jaffa dress.
Teal'c followed two steps behind in formal Jaffa observation register and took his position at the east wall without speaking. Daniel entered at 0858 in his standard SGC science-division attire with his reading glasses on his forehead and his small leather notebook in his left hand.
I sat at the head of the table at 0900.
Bra'tac sat at the right. Daniel at the left.
The medical-channel earpiece in my right ear, the one I had authorized at 0612 this morning after Janet and I had spoken about the briefing's architecture, was on at the low setting. Janet was in the medical office monitoring. Her presence in my interior at this distance was the witness's-register operating remotely.
I opened at 0903.
"Master Bra'tac. You have observed Earth's expansion. You have seen the Replicator war's close. You have heard, through Teal'c, the briefings on the Ba'al coalition. I have asked you here because the Jaffa carry knowledge older than the Tok'ra council. I am going to ask you a question that may not have a clean answer. Tell me what the Jaffa know about the one who walks the threshold."
Bra'tac held his eyes on me for four seconds.
He did not look at Daniel.
He did not look at Teal'c.
He spoke at 0907:18 in his formal Jaffa-elder register.
"Drew Ramsey of the Tau'ri. The Jaffa do not speak this name aloud. We speak the threshold instead. The one who walks the threshold is the half-thing — neither Goa'uld nor ascended Other. He was punished for crossing the seam, denied the full ascension, kept in the half-light by the Others' law. He has been silent for centuries. The Jaffa have always known he is silent the way a predator is silent. He is moving again. The young ones do not yet know. The old ones have begun to whisper."
Daniel set his notebook on the table at 0908:11.
He held his hands flat on the wood.
He said at 0911, in his archaeologist's register: "Master Bra'tac, the Jaffa terms — the seam, the half-light — these are Ancient theological terms in Jaffa-adapted register. The Jaffa learned these from the early Goa'uld who studied Ancient theology. The threshold is the boundary between ascension and embodiment. The one who walks the threshold is the figure who exists in both states."
Bra'tac turned his head to Daniel.
The turn was slow.
"Daniel Jackson. You speak the words correctly. The young ones could not have spoken them. You have begun to walk close to the threshold yourself. I have watched your hands during the wedding ceremony at Drew Ramsey's vow. The light in your fingers. The old ones know that light. Be careful with it."
Daniel at 0913:18 did not respond verbally.
Janet's earpiece at 0913:31, in my right ear, at the medical-officer register:
"Drew. Steady. Watch his hands."
I watched.
Daniel's hands had not moved from the table. His left index finger at 0913:44 carried a faint luminescence the table's overhead fluorescent had been masking but that Bra'tac's naming had brought into Drew's visual field at a registered presence. The luminescence was faint but it was sustained, not the half-second flicker of the wedding ceremony AURORA-7 had catalogued and I had not seen. The light against the wood-grain was its own small geometry.
I saw it for nine seconds.
I did not speak.
AURORA-7 in private interior at 0913:51 in her cool register:
Spectral signature consistent with pre-ascension energetic register. Janet's metabolic readings are correlated.
I let the silence hold.
Daniel at 0915:02 closed his left hand into a loose fist on the table. The luminescence dimmed under the skin but did not extinguish. He looked at me. He did not say anything.
The conversation continued.
Bra'tac, in the next two hours, provided three additional intelligence items.
First: the substrate of the one who walks the threshold operated by silence-as-pressure. The Goa'uld coalition under Ba'al that had not engaged in thirteen days was operating under the substrate's pressure-of-silence. The silence was not coincidence. The silence was the substrate's signature mode. Bra'tac said: "The young Goa'uld speak of strategic regrouping. The old Jaffa elders have known the silence-of-the-threshold for thirty-eight generations. The silence is the substrate's hand on the coalition's shoulder. It is the substrate measuring the room. When it stops measuring, it will move."
Second: the Asgard archive contained, in its Ancient-theology section, a sealed file the Asgard council had marked centuries ago as the seam. The file would be released only on direct request from a recognized partner-of-record through Thor's personal authorization. The Asgard had not opened the file in eight hundred years. Bra'tac: "The Jaffa elders know the Asgard hold the file. We do not know what is in it. We know it has been waiting for the partner who would ask."
Third: the Jaffa elder rebellion was preparing for a generational shift. Bra'tac: "We will rise. The rising will require a place to rise toward. Drew Ramsey of the Tau'ri, your empire will be asked to choose. Will it become a refuge for the Jaffa who will throw off the false gods, or will it become a threat that the Jaffa will need to overcome on their way to becoming free. I will not yet say which I would have you choose. The choice is the next decade's. I will ask it then."
The brief closed at 1117.
Bra'tac and Teal'c left the briefing room together. Daniel stayed at the table. He did not look at his hand. He did not say anything for a count of forty. He stood at 1119. He left without speaking.
Walter at the recording console turned the archive off at 1120 and removed the storage crystal. He set it in the small secure case Drew had authorized. He filed the case in the briefing room's wall safe. He left.
I sat at the table alone for sixteen minutes.
Hammond received the briefing summary at 1300.
He read it in eleven minutes at his desk. He set the document on the blotter. He looked at me.
"Mr. Ramsey. The umbrella has just gotten heavier. I will hold."
"Yes sir."
He nodded.
I left at 1307.
I went to Daniel's archive at 2117.
He was at the small desk in the corner where he did his late-evening translation work. The desk lamp was on at the warm low setting. He was reading a Tok'ra theological scroll Martouf had brought him three weeks ago. His left hand was resting on the desk's wood surface palm-down.
I sat in the chair across from him.
He did not look up.
I said: "Bra'tac saw something in your hands at the wedding. He saw it again today. The pattern is consistent with Ancient theological precedent. Janet has been watching your metabolic register for fourteen days. The pattern is the same pattern."
He nodded once.
He set the scroll down.
At 2127 he said, in the register he had used at the briefing's silent reception at 0913:18: "Drew. I have been seeing the pattern in dreams. I do not yet know the woman's face. I am not afraid yet. When I am afraid I will tell you and Janet."
I nodded.
I did not speak.
He picked up the scroll. He resumed reading.
I sat with him for another nine minutes without speaking.
I left at 2138.
Walter was at the SRD office territory map at 2347 when I came through the door.
He had not gone home. He had stayed at the recording-console handoff position. He had the small folder under his arm. The folder was the green-tabbed one Walter used for accounting reconciliations.
I came to the map.
The map showed nine territories holding. The SOURCE UNKNOWN signature glyph was at the lower right of the screen now at 0.62. The Replicator residual sweep was in pale green at the outer survey corridor. The Ba'al coalition map was quiet in the upper left, the silence in its thirteenth flagged day.
Walter said at 2349: "Sir. Your three-percent territory accounting has been holding the same shape since Day 113. The shape is consistent. The shape is not random. I am preparing the file for your review at your authorization."
I held the map's edge with my left hand.
I counted three seconds.
"Walter. Hold the file. I will authorize when I am ready."
"Sir."
He did not move.
He stood at the map beside me for another forty seconds. The folder was under his arm. The clock on the wall above the territory map's frame moved from 2349 to 2350 with the small electromechanical click the clock had been making since 1989.
Walter walked back to his console at 2350:14.
He set the folder in the locked lower drawer.
He turned the key.
