Marta Ironveil arrived precisely on time, carrying a leather portfolio that I recognized as a Mahakam commercial document case. The kind used for contracts and proposals rather than casual correspondence.
She didn't come to inspect. She came to negotiate.
Davan had arranged the planning room for a formal meeting—the survey maps moved to secondary positions, the central table cleared except for water and writing materials. Yarpen was present near the doorway, not participating but watching. Triss worked at her usual table in the corner, close enough to hear without being part of the discussion.
"Director Valaris." Marta set her portfolio on the table. "I'll be direct. Clan Ironveil has observed your colony's ore production for eight months. Your output figures are consistent, your quality is acceptable, and your location offers access to veins that Ironveil's current operations cannot efficiently reach."
"You want access to our ore."
"I want to propose a joint processing arrangement." She opened the portfolio and withdrew a document written in formal Mahakam commercial script. "Ironveil provides processing expertise—smelting capacity, refining techniques, quality certification for export markets. Your colony provides access to the northeast veins and raw ore extraction. Production is shared: seventy percent to the colony, thirty percent to Ironveil."
I read the document while she waited. The terms were comprehensive—extraction schedules, quality standards, dispute resolution procedures, termination clauses. Professional work, carefully drafted.
A better offer than I expected. But a dependency structure—Ironveil controls the processing bottleneck. If they decide to squeeze, we have no alternative.
"The production share creates a dependency," I said. "If Ironveil's processing capacity becomes unavailable, the colony loses access to export markets entirely."
"Processing capacity doesn't become unavailable without cause."
"Causes exist. Politics, clan disputes, market conditions. A thirty percent share gives Ironveil leverage that affects the entire colony operation."
Marta's expression didn't change. "What counter-proposal would you offer?"
"Technical exchange without production dependency. Ironveil shares processing expertise—training, technique documentation, equipment specifications. The colony compensates through ore sales at market rate, contract by contract. No permanent stake, no structural dependency."
A pause. Something shifted in her expression—not anger, closer to recalculation.
"I will consult my clan and return with a response."
She collected her portfolio and departed without additional discussion.
Yarpen spoke after the door closed.
"You misread that."
I turned toward him. "Explain."
"Marta wasn't trying to create dependency. She was offering partnership." He moved from the doorway to the table, looking at the space where the document had been. "Joint-ownership culture versus contract culture. In Mahakam commercial tradition, a production share isn't leverage—it's alignment. When Ironveil takes thirty percent, they're invested in the colony's success. Their reputation is tied to your output quality."
"And my counter-offer?"
"Technical exchange without shared stake is what you offer a tradesman. Someone you hire, not someone you work with." His voice was neutral, factual. "To a Mahakam clan, refusing the production share reads as refusing to treat them as equals."
I applied contract logic to a partnership proposal. Treated an offer between equals as a supplier's bid.
Wrong framework. Wrong cultural read. Wrong answer.
"What would a correct response have looked like?"
"A smaller share—maybe fifteen percent—with a sunset clause. After five years, the share converts to preferred supplier status. You accept the partnership frame while limiting the duration."
"You didn't say this before the meeting."
"You didn't ask." He picked up a survey tool from the equipment rack. "I'm not your advisor. I'm watching to see how you handle problems. This was one."
He walked toward the Level 2 tunnels, leaving me with the specific discomfort of a failure I hadn't anticipated.
Triss set down her pen.
"I've written the second version of the Brotherhood report."
I looked up from the working ledger where I'd been documenting the Ironveil error. Triss's expression was calm, settled—the look of someone who had made a decision and was informing me rather than seeking approval.
"What does it say?"
"The accurate version—the one that describes what I've actually observed—would trigger a formal investigation. Statistical anomalies, unexplained efficiencies, methodology that doesn't match any documented technique. The Brotherhood would send a senior operative with inquiry authority."
"And the version you're sending?"
"Describes the colony's results as consistent with advanced empirical engineering and exceptional systematic methodology. Characterizes you as a practitioner whose work is reproducible through documented technique." She met my eyes. "Not a single lie. But the truth arranged to suggest a conclusion that keeps them from looking closer."
She's protecting me. Protecting the colony. At professional cost she understands better than I do.
"You understand what you're risking."
"I understand exactly what I'm risking." Her voice was steady. "My standing with the Brotherhood. My future assignments. My professional reputation if they discover what the report omits."
"Why?"
"Because the alternative is worse. For you, for the colony, and for the work that's happening here." She picked up the sealed document. "I'm telling you because you should know, not because I need permission."
She sent the report that evening.
I added two entries to the working ledger.
Ironveil: joint-ownership vs. contract culture — relearn.
Brotherhood report: Triss — date — informative version sent.
The Ironveil error sat in my thoughts as I worked through the spring excavation adjustments. I'd applied the wrong framework to a negotiation that mattered—treated a potential partner as a potential threat. The cultural misread had cost something that couldn't be recovered by restating the counter-offer.
Study Mahakam joint-ownership culture through Yarpen before Marta returns. Prepare a revised counter that acknowledges the partnership frame. Wait for her to come back rather than sending a letter.
Letters are contract culture. Face-to-face meetings are partnership culture.
I have to learn the grammar before I can speak the language.
Triss's report decision sat alongside the Ironveil failure—a different kind of cost, freely chosen. She had weighed her professional standing against the colony's protection and decided the protection mattered more.
She named the risk explicitly. "I understand exactly what I'm risking."
That's not loyalty. That's judgment. She evaluated the situation and made a choice.
The spring tunnels advanced another twelve meters before dark. The Level 4 access shaft reached the fifteen-meter mark. The colony continued growing while I sat with the specific weight of being wrong about something that mattered.
The cost column updated itself without my permission.
