Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 – Fractures

No one spoke for a long time after the creature left.

The inn felt smaller now.

Like the walls had moved closer when no one was looking.

Ben sat on the floor, back against the counter, staring at nothing.

Ronan stood near the door, silent, alert.

Lyra remained by the far wall, arms crossed, but her usual confidence had dulled.

Sera hadn't moved from the window.

Only Kael shifted.

Restless.

"…It didn't lose interest."

His voice cut through the silence.

"It paused."

No one argued.

Because they all felt it.

Pressure

Kael pressed his fingers against his temple.

The voices hadn't stopped.

They weren't whispers anymore.

They were… fragments.

"…too slow…"

"…ran the wrong way…"

"…don't let it see—"

"Enough."

The word came out sharper than he intended.

Ben flinched.

"…Sorry."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Not you."

He lowered his hand.

But the pressure stayed.

System Shift

A faint notification flickered.

[Skill Adaptation Complete]

Kael focused.

[Emotion Filter – Stabilized]

Reduces emotional interference from synced targets.

Does not eliminate memory bleed.

"…So I keep the memories," Kael muttered.

"…Just not the panic."

"Is that good?" Ben asked.

"…It's manageable."

"…That doesn't sound good."

"…It's not."

Fracture Point

Ronan finally spoke.

"We can't stay here."

Kael looked at him.

"…Agreed."

"That thing will come back."

"It already decided we're not worth the effort," Kael said.

"For now," Lyra added.

"…Exactly."

Silence stretched.

Then—

"We need to move before it changes its mind," Ronan said.

Sera nodded slightly.

"…There's movement patterns."

All eyes turned to her.

She pointed toward the street.

"…The corrupted units move in waves."

"…The larger entity moves slower. It circles."

"…So there are gaps," Kael said.

"…Small ones," Sera replied.

Kael's expression sharpened.

"…Then we move between them."

Planning Without Comfort

They gathered near the center of the room.

No table.

No map.

Just memory.

"Destination?" Lyra asked.

Kael thought.

Then—

"…Higher ground."

Ronan frowned.

"…Why?"

"Better visibility. Fewer blind corners. Easier escape routes."

"…And harder to reach," Sera added.

Kael nodded.

"…Exactly."

Ben looked between them.

"…So we're climbing again."

"…We never stopped," Kael said.

Exit

They moved toward the door.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Kael stopped just before stepping out.

"…Wait."

He focused.

[Partial Sync Activated]

[Skill Copied: Enhanced Hearing]

The city returned in layers.

Distant flames.

Faint movement.

Scraping… dragging… shifting.

"…Left side is clear," Kael said.

"…Right side has movement."

Ronan nodded.

"…We go left."

Back Into the City

The door opened with a soft creak.

They stepped out.

The air felt heavier than before.

Thicker.

Watching.

They moved as a group.

Tighter now.

More aware.

Step.

Step.

Step.

No one spoke.

Learning Movement

They passed through a narrow street.

Then another.

A corrupted unit appeared at the far end.

It twitched.

Kael raised a hand.

"Slow."

They adjusted instantly.

Movement reduced.

Presence lowered.

The creature paused.

Tilted its head.

Then turned away.

"…We're learning," Lyra whispered.

"…We have to," Kael replied.

Small Mistake

A loose stone shifted under Ben's foot.

Click.

The sound echoed louder than it should have.

The corrupted unit froze.

Then turned.

"…Run," Ben whispered.

"…No," Kael said.

The creature stepped closer.

"…Stay calm."

"…I am not calm."

"…Pretend."

The creature sniffed the air.

Moved closer.

Closer.

Kael didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

"…We are nothing."

He repeated it again.

"…not worth it…"

The creature twitched.

Paused.

Then—

It turned away.

Ben collapsed slightly.

"…I hate this strategy."

"…It works," Kael said.

"…I still hate it."

"…You can hate it while surviving."

Progress

They reached a wider section of the city.

At the far end—

A tall structure rose above the rest.

Partially broken.

But still standing.

"…There," Kael said.

Sera nodded.

"…Good line of sight."

Ronan adjusted his grip.

"…Then that's our target."

Internal Shift

As they moved—

Kael felt something change.

Not outside.

Inside.

The voices didn't stop.

But they… aligned.

Less chaotic.

More… distant.

"…Interesting."

A notification appeared.

[Echo of the Fallen – 3/?? Resonances]

Kael frowned.

"…Three now."

"…How many does it take?"

No answer.

Ending

They stopped at the base of the structure.

A broken stairway led upward.

Dark.

Narrow.

Unknown.

Kael looked up.

"…Higher ground."

He stepped forward.

"…Let's see what's waiting."

Behind them—

The city shifted again.

And far in the distance—

That massive presence paused.

Then slowly—

Turned back toward them.
