Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – Shadows of the Palace

The palace was alive. Every corridor echoed with whispers, footsteps that didn't belong, and eyes that followed me from the shadows. I should have been terrified. I should have run.

But I couldn't.

The king's presence lingered everywhere I went. Even in my private chamber, the memory of his gaze burned into my skin. My pulse raced at every creak of the floorboards, every flicker of candlelight.

"You are far too curious," he said suddenly, appearing in the doorway as if he had materialized from the shadows themselves. His eyes darkened, reading my thoughts, my fears… my desires.

"I—" I faltered. "I just… I'm trying to understand this place."

He stepped closer, and the air between us grew heavy, charged. "Understanding is dangerous. Curiosity is dangerous. And yet… I see the way your eyes follow me."

My cheeks burned. My heart thumped against my ribs, betraying me. "I—I don't mean to—"

"You do." His voice was low, silk over steel, and it wrapped around me like a noose. "You can't help it. You want me. Just as I want you. And that… terrifies you, doesn't it?"

I swallowed hard. His words were truths I hadn't admitted to myself. My body responded before my mind could protest.

He leaned in closer. Close enough for his breath to ghost over my lips. "I could take you right here," he whispered, "and you wouldn't resist. And yet…"

He pulled back, letting the tension linger like a knife. "I want you to understand. I want you to want me because you choose it. Not because fear drives you."

I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling my heartbeat hammer against my ribs. He was impossible—dangerous, intoxicating, and utterly… consuming.

Then, without warning, he placed something on the desk: a silver ring etched with symbols I didn't recognize. His gaze lingered on me, sharp and intimate. "Keep it," he said. "It will protect you… for now."

And with that, he vanished into the shadows, leaving me alone with my racing thoughts and the undeniable truth: I was no longer just a Chosen. I was his obsession.

• Why did the king give her the ring? • What does the palace hide from her? • Is his obsession protective—or dangerous beyond imagination?
