King pushed open the heavy front door of the Victorian manor and stepped inside. Eli followed close behind him. The hallway stretched quiet and dark. No lights burned in the main rooms. No voices carried from the corridors. King didn't look worried. He simply moved toward the private rooms.
"I'll check Vi's room," he said.
Eli gave a short bow. "I'll look in on Maya."
They split up. King took a right. He reached Vi's door, turned the handle, and stepped in. The bed was made, but the room sat empty. No sign of her.
He came back out into the corridor at the same time Eli did.
"The child is fine," Eli reported. "Still sleeping. But her breathing is as healthy as can be."
King rubbed the back of his neck. "Then where the hell is Vi?"
His eyes moved down the hallway and stopped at his own bedroom door. A thin line of warm light leaked out from underneath it.
