Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: The Starting News

The sun had already set by the time Alex Rivera walked through the front door of the family home in Inglewood. The streetlights were on, casting a soft orange glow on the familiar porch. He had come straight from the training facility after the coach's surprise announcement. His legs were still heavy from the intense session, but his heart felt lighter than it had in weeks. Number 33 on his back suddenly felt heavier in the best way possible.

He stepped inside and the smell of Lisa's home-cooked dinner hit him immediately — grilled chicken, rice, fresh vegetables, and the faint aroma of herbs. The TV was on low in the living room, showing the evening sports highlights, but the volume was turned down. This was family dinner night, the kind of normal, grounding evening he had come to cherish even more since his promotion to the first team.

Ben was already at the head of the table, reading something on his phone. Lisa was in the kitchen, finishing the last touches on the meal. Emma had come over early and was helping set the table, her long blonde hair tied back in a loose ponytail. She looked up when Alex entered and gave him a bright smile.

"You're home," she said softly, walking over to give him a quick hug. "How was training today? You look like you have something on your mind."

Alex hugged her back, then moved to the table and sat down. He waited until everyone was seated and Lisa had served the food before he spoke. The normal family rhythm felt comforting — plates being passed, glasses filled with water, the low hum of conversation about the day.

Ben took a bite and looked at Alex. "So, how was the session? The coach still pushing you hard?"

Alex took a deep breath, his voice steady but filled with quiet excitement. "It was intense. Team drills, 1v2 defending, full 11v11 with high press. Then Coach pulled me aside for individual free-kick practice. I must have taken thirty or forty free-kicks. The goalkeepers were diving full stretch, but I kept finding the top corner."

Lisa smiled proudly as she passed the salad bowl. "That's my boy. You've been working so hard on those set-pieces. We saw the highlights from the last match on TV. That free-kick you scored… the whole stadium went crazy."

Emma squeezed his thigh under the table, her eyes shining. "You looked so confident standing over the ball. Like you already knew you were going to score it. I was screaming at the TV."

The conversation stayed light for a few minutes — normal family talk about the day, Lisa's new training clients, Ben's work, and Emma's dance practice. But Alex could feel the big news bubbling inside him. He waited for a natural pause, then spoke.

"Coach Morales made an announcement at the end of the session today."

The table fell quiet. Everyone looked at him.

Alex continued, his voice calm but filled with pride. "He said I've been showing I belong. He said I'm starting the next game. Not on the bench. Starting in the first team. The away match this weekend. I'm in the starting XI."

For a moment, the room was completely silent. Then it erupted.

Lisa's eyes filled with tears. She stood up and pulled Alex into a tight hug, holding him for a long time. "My baby… starting in the first team. At 15 years old. I can't believe it. We're so proud of you, Alex. So proud."

Ben stood up next, his face beaming with emotion. He wrapped Alex in a strong, fatherly hug, clapping his back hard. "Starting. Not coming on late. Starting. You've worked so hard for this. From the backyard free-kicks to this. I'm so happy for you, son. This is huge."

Emma was the last to hug him. She threw her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek, then his lips, not caring that her parents were right there. "You did it, Ace. You're starting. The whole stadium is going to be watching you from the first minute. I'm so excited for you. I'll be there cheering louder than anyone."

The family sat back down, but the energy at the table had completely changed. The normal dinner had turned into a celebration. Plates were passed with extra enthusiasm. Lisa kept serving Alex more food, saying he needed to keep his strength up for the starting role. Ben raised his glass of water again.

"To Alex — starting in the first team. To number 33. And to helping the team stay in sixth place and push for the playoffs. We're barely surviving up there, one point above the line, but you're going to help them fight."

Emma leaned closer to Alex, her voice soft but full of pride. "You're going to start. The coach trusts you. The fans are going to chant your name from the first minute. I can't wait to watch you play from the beginning."

Alex smiled, taking it all in. The news felt real now that he had shared it with his family. He thought about the league table again — 6th place, one point above survival. The team was barely hanging on, and he had the chance to start and help them push higher.

The dinner continued with excited conversation. They talked about the upcoming away match, what it would feel like for Alex to start, how the family would watch it together, and how proud they all were. Lisa kept tearing up. Ben kept smiling. Emma kept squeezing his hand under the table, her eyes dark with pride and excitement.

As the meal wound down, Alex felt a deep sense of happiness. He had told his family the big news. They were overjoyed. The support from home was everything.

But he still had two more people to tell.

Emma and Sophia.

The night was young, and the arc of his rising career was only accelerating.
