Chapter 74 - Chapter 74: The Call That Shook Everything

The week after the dramatic 3-2 comeback victory was a rare and welcome break for the Galaxy first team.

Alex Rivera spent the first few days recovering at home, his body still sore from the intense physical battles in the senior squad. The league table had barely moved — Galaxy remained in 6th place in the Western Conference, just one single point above the playoff cut-off line. The team below them still had a game in hand. Every point mattered. The season was still a fight for survival, and the pressure never really left.

Tonight was family dinner — simple, normal, and grounding.

The table was set with Lisa's home-cooked meal: grilled chicken, rice, fresh vegetables, and a big bowl of salad. The TV was on low in the background, showing sports highlights, but no one was really watching. It was just a normal family evening after a whirlwind week.

Ben sat at the head of the table, looking relaxed for the first time in days. Lisa was serving everyone generous portions. Emma sat right next to Alex, her hand occasionally brushing his under the table. The atmosphere was warm and familiar — the kind of dinner they used to have before football took over Alex's life.

Ben raised his glass of water. "To a quiet week. No training, no matches, no media chaos. Just us. And to Alex — number 33. You came on at 65' when the team was 0-2 down and turned the game into a 3-2 win with a free-kick and two assists. We're all so proud of you, son."

Lisa smiled warmly, serving Alex an extra helping of chicken. "We watched every second of that match. The whole stadium chanting your name… 'Ace! Ace! Ace!' I still get goosebumps thinking about it. You're only 15 and you're already saving the team. How does it feel, baby?"

Alex took a bite, chewing slowly before answering. "It feels good. The team is still in sixth place — just one point above the playoff line. We're barely surviving, but that win gave us breathing room. I'm just happy I could help the team get the three points we needed."

Emma squeezed his thigh under the table, her eyes sparkling with pride and something more private. "You were incredible. The way you stood over that free-kick and told the senior players you would score it… then actually did it… that was so hot. The whole stadium went crazy for you."

The conversation stayed light and normal for a while. They talked about everyday things — Lisa's new training clients at the gym, Ben's latest project at work, Emma's upcoming dance competition, and even some old stories from when Alex was younger and played in the backyard with his father. No heavy football talk. No media questions. Just family.

Ben chuckled as he passed the salad bowl. "Remember when you were ten and you used to practice free-kicks against the garage door for hours? Now you're scoring them in front of 28,000 people. Life is crazy sometimes."

Lisa nodded, eyes soft. "And you're still the same boy who helps with the dishes after dinner. Fame hasn't changed you yet. We're lucky."

Emma leaned her head on Alex's shoulder for a moment. "I'm just happy you're home for a few days. No training, no matches. We can actually spend time together without you being exhausted."

The dinner continued at a relaxed pace. They laughed about old family memories, teased each other, and enjoyed the simple food. The league table reminder was there in the back of Alex's mind — 6th place, one point above survival — but for tonight it felt distant.

Then Alex's phone rang.

The number was unknown, but the area code was from another major MLS city. He excused himself and stepped into the hallway to answer.

"Hello?"

A confident, professional voice came through the line. "Alex Rivera? This is Mark Thompson, sporting director for [rival MLS club]. We've been watching your performances closely — especially that free-kick and the two assists last weekend. Impressive for a 15-year-old. We'd like to discuss a potential move. We can offer you a substantial first-team contract — significantly more money than what you're on now, guaranteed playing time, and a clear path to being a starter. We see you as a key part of our future."

Alex stood frozen in the hallway, phone pressed to his ear. His mind raced.

Another club. A good offer. More money. Guaranteed minutes.

He was confused. He had just broken into the Galaxy first team. He had just scored a free-kick and given two assists to win a match. The fans were chanting his name. The team was barely surviving in sixth place, and he felt loyal to the club that had given him the chance.

"I… I appreciate the call," Alex said carefully. "I'm still under contract with Galaxy. I need time to think about this."

The sporting director replied smoothly. "Of course. Take your time. But opportunities like this don't come often for a player your age. We can make you a very rich young man."

Alex hung up, heart pounding. He walked back to the dinner table, face slightly pale.

"Everything okay, son?" Ben asked, noticing the change.

Alex sat down slowly. "That was a sporting director from another MLS club. They want to sign me. Better money, guaranteed playing time. I'm confused. I just broke into the first team here. We're fighting to stay in sixth place — one point above the playoff line. I don't know if I should leave now."

The family fell silent for a moment.

Lisa reached across the table and took his hand. "You don't have to decide anything tonight. You're only 18. This is a big decision."

Emma squeezed his thigh again, her voice supportive. "Whatever you choose, I'm with you. But you earned your spot at Galaxy. They believed in you first."

Alex nodded, mind still spinning. The normal family dinner had suddenly become a turning point.

He had no idea that the phone call was only the beginning.
