Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: Substitution at 65’ – Number 33

The fourth official raised the board high at exactly 65:00.

Number 33 — Alex Rivera ON

The stadium announcer's voice boomed across the 28,000-seat arena:

"Substitution for the LA Galaxy… coming on… number thirty-three… Alex Rivera!"

A loud ripple of applause and curiosity swept through the crowd. Many fans were still trying to figure out who this 15-year-old kid was, but the ones who had watched the previous match remembered the name. The giant screens flashed his name and number in massive white and blue: 33 – A. RIVERA. The score was 0–2. Galaxy were trailing badly and desperately needed points to stay alive in the Western Conference.

Alex Rivera sprinted down the sideline, heart hammering against his ribs. He high-fived the player coming off, then stepped onto the pitch for the second time in his senior career. The grass felt different under his boots — thicker, more alive, charged with the desperation of a team fighting for survival. The floodlights burned brighter. The roar of the crowd wrapped around him like a living thing.

He jogged straight into the No. 10 role, taking up position just behind the strikers. The referee blew the whistle to restart the game.

The score was 0–2.

Galaxy were in 6th place in the Western Conference — just one single point above the playoff cut-off line. A loss tonight would drop them into the danger zone. They needed at least a draw to stay safe. A win would be a miracle. The entire stadium knew the stakes.

Alex's first touch came almost immediately.

65:12

A Galaxy defender won the ball in midfield and played a simple pass into the centre circle. Alex dropped deep to receive it, calling loudly for the ball. The pass rolled toward him. He controlled it with God's First Touch — the ball stuck to his boot like it was magnetised. The visiting midfielder closed him down instantly, lunging in hard.

Alex didn't panic. He performed a quick step-over with his right foot, shifted the ball to his left, and used a sharp body feint to force the defender to commit. Then he exploded with Phantom Shadow Dribble. The after-image flickered for a split second, freezing the defender. Alex burst past him and played a crisp, weighted pass into the channel for the winger.

The crowd gave a loud ripple of applause — the first real recognition of the new No. 33.

The commentator's voice rose over the speakers:

"First touch for the 15-year-old Alex Rivera! Number 33 steps onto the pitch with Galaxy trailing 0-2. The young substitute has already shown his quality in previous appearances. The team desperately needs a spark if they want to stay in sixth place and keep their playoff hopes alive."

65:45

Alex dropped deeper again, demanding the ball. Captain Marco "El Rey" Delgado saw him and played a sharp pass. Alex received it under pressure from two visiting players. He killed the ball dead with God's First Touch, then used a rapid roulette to spin away from the first challenge. The second defender lunged in. Alex slipped the ball through his legs with a no-look pass and surged forward into the No. 10 pocket.

The crowd roared louder this time. "Ace! Ace!" started in one section and began spreading.

Alex felt the energy surge through him.

They're watching. Number 33. They don't know me yet… but they will. The team is 0-2 down. They need points to survive in sixth place. I will give them more than points. I will give them a comeback.

66:30

Galaxy built another attack. Alex received the ball 30 yards out. Three defenders closed him down. He performed a series of quick body feints, shifting his shoulders left then right, then triggered Phantom Shadow Dribble twice in succession. The after-images left two defenders completely wrong-footed. He burst into the box and squared a dangerous low cross. The striker stretched but couldn't quite reach it. The ball rolled just wide.

The stadium erupted in a massive groan followed by loud applause. The commentator shouted:

"Rivera with a brilliant piece of skill! That dribble from number 33 created the chance. The kid is already making an impact in his second senior appearance!"

67:10

The visitors tried to counter. Alex tracked back 35 yards at full sprint, made a perfectly timed sliding tackle, won the ball cleanly, and immediately launched the attack again. The crowd cheered loudly for the young substitute who was already putting his body on the line.

Delgado ran past him and shouted, "Keep going, 33! You're changing the game!"

Alex's confidence grew with every touch. He was no longer the unknown kid. He was number 33 — the one creating, the one fighting, the one the crowd was starting to notice.

68:20

Galaxy won a throw-in deep in the opposition half. Alex positioned himself perfectly. He received the ball, beat one man with a sharp change of direction, and played a no-look pass that split the defence. The striker took a touch and shot — saved by the keeper at full stretch for a corner.

The crowd was on its feet now, roaring. "Ace! Ace! Ace!" was growing louder in several sections.

Alex stood over the corner flag, eyes scanning the box. He delivered a dangerous inswinger. The header flashed just wide. The groan from the crowd was huge, but the applause for the young No. 33 was even louder.

69:45

The visitors were time-wasting now, but Galaxy kept pressing. Alex won the ball high up the pitch with a strong challenge. He surged forward, beat two players with quick touches, and was fouled hard from behind just outside the box.

Free-kick. 28 yards out. Slightly left of centre.

The stadium suddenly grew louder. The crowd sensed something special. The giant screens showed Alex's name and number 33 in massive letters. The commentator's voice rose with excitement:

"Free-kick for the Galaxy! Number 33, Alex Rivera, stands over the ball. The 15-year-old substitute has already changed the energy of this match. The crowd is on its feet!"

Alex placed the ball carefully. He took three steps back, eyes locked on the far post. The wall jumped. The keeper shifted. The entire stadium held its breath.

The moment was coming.
