Chapter 134 - Chapter 134: A Father’s Allegiance

"Bartholomew Kuma, accept my terms. I will chart our course directly to Punk Hazard and force Vegapunk to reconstruct your daughter's cells!"

Ace's booming voice vibrated across the wide timber clearing of the world tree.

The colossal, mountain-like figure standing opposite him trembled slightly, the frame of his shoulders shifting. Behind his round lenses, his unreadable gaze locked intensely onto the young captain standing on the boarding ramp.

"Why?" Kuma's voice was deep, gravelly, and stripped of volume. "The authority of the World Government cuts far deeper than your horizon can calculate. Is it tactically viable to anchor a permanent feud with the masters of the world for a child who shares no lineage with your crew?"

Ace didn't offer a rapid reply. Instead, he stepped smoothly down the brass suspension ladder, closing the distance until he stood directly before Kuma's massive build.

"Lineage?" Ace's tone was level, carrying an absolute, calcified certainty. "The microsecond your boots cross the threshold of this deck, she becomes family to the Eclipse Pirates. My people—the World Government can try to touch a single hair on their heads if they have the spine for it."

Ace paused, his eyes narrowing slightly. "As for anchoring a feud? The ledger was signed the moment I crushed three lineages of the World Nobles within the streets of Sabaody. I set sail with the explicit purpose of pulling those high and mighty masters down from their thrones anyway, so a few more debts on my account won't alter the trajectory."

Hearing the uninhibited, natural authority behind Ace's declaration, Kuma felt a heavy stone lift from his chest. He slowly closed his eyes. If it meant his daughter could walk beneath the natural light of the sun without her flesh calcifying into stone, he would gladly let his own soul descend into the deepest dark of hell.

"Understood."

Kuma opened his eyes, his expression solemn as he tucked his leather-bound Bible securely into his coat. Then, the legend whose name forced minor kings into a state of panic dropped onto one knee before Ace, lowering his silver-cropped head in total submission.

"If Bonney's cellular curse can be broken... from this hour, Bartholomew Kuma's steel belongs to your command, Captain."

Half a day later, the Eclipse cleared the upper canopy of the Torino Kingdom, leaving the primitive settlements behind. Having thoroughly cleared the shelves of the ancient botanical library, the black warship altered its altitude, cutting a direct, high-speed flight path toward the coastal perimeter of the Sorbet Kingdom.

Guided by the automated tracking arrays of the bridge, the vessel made a quiet, radar-shielded landing amidst the high weeds of an abandoned chapel on the outskirts of the Sorbet border.

Kuma stepped down into the damp, stone basement of the sanctuary, pushing open a reinforced timber door.

"Dad! Is that you back?!"

From a shadowed corner beside a series of large water barrels, a seven-year-old girl with long, vibrant pink hair bounded forward with immense energy. Had it not been for the glaring, blue-jade scale structures creeping along the margins of her pale arms and cheeks, anyone would have mistaken her for a healthy, mischievous child.

"Bonney..." Kuma's eyes grew rimmed with red as he stepped across the stones, his massive arms wrapping around her small frame to draw her against his chest.

"Dad, did you bring a specialist back this time? I'm going entirely crazy sitting in this dark room! And my stomach is completely empty!" Bonney snuggled into his coat, her voice bright despite the fatigue of her isolation.

"I found them," Kuma whispered, forcing the moisture back from his eyes. "I located the sharpest physician on the open sea, and a Captain with the mass to let us live beneath the sun."

Chopper trotted into the room, his large pupils shining with the gentle, professional focus of a master healer as he inspected the scale configurations. "Don't be frightened, Bonney! My name is Chopper, and I will systematically disassemble this disease for you!"

"A speaking reindeer?! It's adorable!" Bonney's eyes lit up instantly, her hooves reaching out to idly pinch Chopper's blue nose.

Because the Sapphire Scale mutation reacted violently to natural illumination, Kuma handled her transition with absolute, clinical caution. Bonney was secured within a heavily insulated, blackout wooden box designed to completely absorb the sun's rays before the party reboarded the Eclipse.

"Reset the matrix," Ace ordered, turning back toward the primary terminal. "Course: East Blue."

Boom!

The ventral vector thrusters erupted with white-hot intensity, driving the massive warship into the stratosphere above the Calm Belt.

A few days later, along a remote, unnamed coastline within the East Blue sectors.

A massive fragment of rock, sheared from the peaks of Merveille, lay embedded in the white sands of a secluded beach, its edges thoroughly broken by its impact with the surf.

"Cough... Jeno, is the catch processed yet? My stomach is completely hollow."

Along the sand line, Enel lay sprawled on his back, his entire sovereign frame bound in heavy linen bandages, his arrogant features swollen and bruised into an unreadable shape. Not far away, Sabo leaned heavily against a tidal rock, his body heavily score-marked, his alloy long staff snapped into two broken pieces of iron.

Leona, Shark, and Urouge were in an equally broken condition. Following their high-speed extraction from Garp's perimeter, Leona's physical reserves had completely failed, causing her gravity control over their island fragment to lapse. The rock mass had descended hard into the ocean, leaving them stranded on this deserted island for days, surviving strictly on whatever raw catch they could fish from the shallows.

Just as the vanguard reached the absolute limit of their physical endurance:

Hum.

The mental communication matrix woven deep within Carina's awareness suddenly chimed with absolute clarity.

"Hey, it looks like the vanguard took a decent bruising over the holidays. The old man didn't leave much meat on your bones, did he?"

Through the telepathic channel, Ace's familiar, dry voice carried a distinct edge of brotherly mockery.

"Captain?!"

The officers bolted upright from the sand as if their reserves had been instantly replenished.

"Captain! You arrogant bastard, how dare you find amusement in this ledger?!" Buggy shrieked through the link, his hands shaking. "If you had been in the yard, our ribs wouldn't be in pieces right now!"

"Stop crying and correct your line of sight," Ace said.

Accompanied by a thunderous, industrial roar from its core thrusters, a colossal, pitch-black warship sheared through the cloud layer ahead, its dark hull hovering steady and unyielding over the beach.

The boarding ramp descended.

Draped in his dark red trench coat, Ace stood at the edge of the deck, looking down at his battered, blood-stained officers with a trace of quiet satisfaction in his gaze. Though they had been thoroughly flattened, his perception could isolate the structural change within their systems; after being subjected to the weight of Garp's top-tier Haki, their individual foundations had grown remarkably deeper and more restrained.

As Sabo and the vanguard dragged their broken frames onto the main deck, their strides froze. Standing in the center of the iron plating was a figure as massive as a stone monument, clad in a black-and-white hooded coat. At his boots rested a large, light-sealed wooden box.

"Bartholomew Kuma..." Carina's purple eyes narrowed instantly, her hand moving toward her rifle as she recognized the profile from the global bounty registries.

"Stand down," Ace said, stepping over the threshold. "From this hour, his name is registered to our ledger. Bartholomew Kuma, former Revolutionary commander. And his daughter, Bonney, who is currently managing a terminal genetic curse that isolates her from the sun."

Ace mapped out their history for the crew, his voice level. As the details settled, the defensive hostility in the vanguard's eyes dissolved into a quiet, understanding stillness.

"Jeno," Ace looked toward the mechanic. "Reconfigure the mid-deck block into a specialized negative-light suite. Ensure the ventilation arrays are drawing the highest performance metrics."

"On it, Captain!"

Without a word of debate, Jeno's right arm reconfigured into a high-frequency cutting tool as he vanished into the interior corridors. Within minutes, a fully insulated, light-sealed cabin lined with comfortable fixtures was cleared for occupancy.

Kuma lifted the wooden crate, transferring his daughter into the dark suite. The moment the hinges cleared, Bonney bounced out into the room, her small frame skittering across the floorboards with excitement.

Carina followed the giant inside. Tracking the pink-haired girl as she waved her small hands through the absolute darkness of the cabin, a soft, rare look of sympathy softened her purple eyes.

"Little Bonney," Carina murmured, stepping into the room and extending her palm toward the child.

"Big sister, who are you?" Bonney asked, her head tilting in the dark.

"I'm Carina, the intelligence core for this ship," Carina said with a soft smile. "I happen to run the communication networks across the board."

She placed her fingers gently against Bonney's forehead, avoiding the jade scale configurations along her cheek. A faint, low-frequency radio wave cleared the space between them, establishing a stable sensory contract between their systems.

"Now, close your eyes, Bonney."

The child obediently dropped her eyelids.

The next microsecond, within the little girl's mind—a space that had known only the restrictive, pitch-black parameters of shuttered rooms—the darkness was violently blown away by a magnificent torrent of visual data.

She saw.

She saw giant sea raptors catching the thermals ten thousand meters in the air; she saw the immense, shimmering sapphire plains of the open ocean dancing beneath the noon sun; through Carina's shared perspective, she tracked the clean, imposing hull of the warship and the scarred, smiling faces of the outlaws standing along the brass rails above deck.

"Wow! The ocean! It's the real ocean! It's so blue! It's beautiful!" Bonney screamed with unmitigated delight, her small arms waving frantically through the dark cabin as she spun in circles.

Standing by the iron bulkheads, Kuma watched his daughter's uninhibited, radiant face.

The Tyrant, who had endured decades of warfare, slave chains, and global infamy without dropping a tear, had his eyes turn instantly red. Two heavy streams of hot moisture cut through the stone-cold lines of his expressionless face.

Kuma turned his boots away from the berth, walking out onto the sunlit deck where Ace stood trading rough jokes with Sabo and the vanguard. He stopped before the young captain, and with absolute, religious solemnity, dropped onto one knee once more.

If his initial compliance within the Bird Kingdom had been a desperate transaction born of survival metrics...

Now, listening to the echoes of his daughter's laughter vibrating through the steel walls of the warship, Bartholomew Kuma had completely and unconditionally sold his soul to the crew of the Eclipse.
