The tunnel moved past him in sections. He clocked each piece of ceiling in sequence: water-stained limestone, a crack running left to right, moss thick in the grout. He registered all of it before he registered that he wasn't walking. His face was at Valen's hip height. His arm hung down, and the thing on his forearm pulsed cold with every step.
The HUD flickered back on.
[ SYSTEM REBOOT COMPLETE ]
[ PROCESSING DELAYED NOTIFICATIONS... ]
Three boxes stacked in the corner of his vision and held.
[ TOXIN NEUTRALIZED VIA EXTERNAL MANA FORGING ]
[ NEW STATUS ACQUIRED: CORRUPTED SHADOW MARK (DORMANT) ]
[Slayer_007]: HE'S ALIVE. ACTUAL MIRACLE.
[IsoldeSimp47]: wait he has a MARK now?? what does that even mean
[dudefromfloripa]: New skin unlocked lmaooo
[LMAO_cat]: bro got branded and passed out immediately 10/10 run
Eloy lifted his free arm. The sleeve had ridden up past the elbow. Where the cut had been was now a network of fine black veins branching across his forearm like frost on glass, pulsing in slow rhythm with his heartbeat. Cold, but not painful.
He stared at it for three steps.
"You're awake," Valen said, without looking down. He kept walking.
"How long was I out."
"Eight minutes." Valen exhaled through his nose. "Long enough to be dead if the Leader had wanted it." A pause. "He didn't."
At a rough section where the ceiling dropped and the floor turned to gravel, Valen set him down. Not gently. Eloy's legs bent and held, barely, and he stood there gripping the wall with one hand while his vision caught up to his body.
"Can you walk."
"Yes."
Valen looked at him for one second, clocked whatever he saw, and kept moving.
[ghostrunner_x]: 13% HP. No potion. Valen is already five meters ahead.
[coldfront44]: he can't take a potion right now anyway. the mark might interact with recovery items.
[IsoldeSimp47]: DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE MARK DOES
Eloy filed it. He had a more immediate problem.
Twenty feet ahead, Isolde was moving with Arthur on her left side. Arthur's boots dragged slightly on each step, but his head was up and his shoulders were back and he wore the expression of someone who had decided this was not a big deal. He had clearly been deciding it very hard for several minutes.
Eloy watched him for a moment. Then he pulled up the inspection command.
The status box appeared over Arthur's head the way they always did, clean and floating, completely indifferent to what it was about to say.
[ ARTHUR GILDHART ]
[ DUAL-AFFINITY PRODIGY ]
[ STATUS: MANA CORE — SHATTERED ]
[ RECOVERY: IMPOSSIBLE ]
Eloy dismissed the box. He kept walking.
[PraiseTheSun]: guys. GUYS.
[wo1flion]: no. no no no.
[LMAO_cat]: the run is cooked. straight up burned everything omg
He was reading it. He kept walking.
"Two weeks," Arthur said, to no one in particular. "The extraction pressure releases, the core recalibrates. That's standard affinity damage protocol. I'll be back to full power by the end of the month." He said it the way someone repeated a thing they'd been rehearsing since they woke up. Even spacing, careful pacing, just a little too flat.
Valen exhaled smoke toward the left wall and said nothing.
Isolde said nothing, which was different but worse.
Arthur felt the silence. His voice dropped half a register. "That's... how it works, right? They said it themselves... I think."
"Yeah," Eloy said.
He heard how flat it came out and didn't fix it. The alternative was saying what the inspection box had told him, which was a different kind of problem. He chose flat.
The passage narrowed at a sheer section where a limestone shoulder had sheared loose and come to rest against the far wall. It left a gap. Narrow. Fit a person sideways, slower with Arthur still unsteady on his feet.
Arthur looked at it. Then at his hands.
"Hold on," he said. "I've got this. I can still be useful even like this, y'know."
He stepped away from Isolde, planted his feet wide, and pressed both palms toward the obstruction. He closed his eyes. He breathed out long and slow.
Three sparks cracked from his fingertips and died in the dark.
Nothing.
Arthur opened his eyes. Stared at his palms. Closed and opened his fingers like resetting a connection. "Oh. That's... huh... The block is stronger than I thought! Give me one second." He tried again. Two sparks, shorter than the first. The sound ate itself against wet stone.
"Arthur." Isolde stepped past him. Her right hand lit blue-white, a controlled static discharge held open in her palm like a lantern, casting their shadows long and crooked down the tunnel walls. "Watch the overhang."
She went through the gap sideways, the light moving with her.
Arthur stood with his palms still raised and watched her go. His arms came down slowly.
Eloy looked at the wall, and went through the gap, gravel grinding under his boots. On the other side, the tunnel angled up at a slope that implied exit, and his HP bar sat at thirteen percent.
The mark on his forearm went white, pulsing a signal.
[ PASSIVE TRIGGER: HOSTILE MANA DETECTED ]
[ SOURCE: OVERHEAD. THREE TARGETS. ]
[ MANA DRAINED: -10 MP ]
He shoved Arthur backward with both hands and dropped.
Three blades hit the floor in a tight line where Arthur's feet had been. Stone sparked. One handle stood upright, still quivering.
Three figures dropped from the ceiling. Their gear was Mugen-Za black, but the clan emblem on each left shoulder had been slashed through with a single diagonal cut. Crossed out.
[Slayer_007]: CEILING NINJAS OUT OF NOWHERE
[nachtfalter]: I SAID the mark was a radar. I literally said that forty seconds ago.
[IsoldeSimp47]: @nachtfalter no you didn't
Valen was already moving. Two short blades drawn, positioning to Eloy's right without a word.
The lead dissident straightened. The mask was smooth and black with no features and no seam, just a flat surface that caught Isolde's light and gave nothing back.
"The Chained God's daughter." No direction in the voice. No inflection. Just presence. "The Leader offered you an escort out. We canceled it."
Isolde's light didn't waver.
"He's gone soft, letting Academy filth walk away with our secrets," the dissident said, stepping forward. "True Mugen-Za don't leave loose ends. Your Director sent you into this forest to disappear. We are just making sure his trash is properly disposed of."
Thirteen percent HP. Ten less mana. Arthur without an affinity behind him. One exit blocked by three bodies, and Valen was already angling wide to create a gap that didn't exist yet.
The blank mask tilted toward Isolde in the blue light, slow and certain, like something with no eyes that still knew exactly where to look.
