Chapter 15 - This is only the beginning

There was no time to think. No time to hesitate. No space for doubt or fear or consequence. In that single, fractured instant where the world seemed to tilt off its axis, Axel's body moved before his mind could catch up, driven not by logic, but by something deeper—something instinctive, something ancient, something that had been waiting for this exact moment to awaken fully within him.

"Come into existence—FLYING CARPET!"

The words tore from him like a command etched into his very soul, not spoken but unleashed, resonating with a force that did not belong to the ordinary world. For a split second, nothing happened—and then everything did.

A golden radiance burst forth beneath Mira's falling form, erupting into existence with a brilliance that seemed to bend the night itself. Light gathered, condensed, and shaped itself into something tangible, something impossibly real—a vast, shimmering carpet woven from threads of luminous energy, its surface rippling like liquid sunlight. It materialized just beneath her, catching her body mid-fall with a softness that defied gravity, as though the very air had chosen to cradle her instead of letting her fall.

Mira gasped sharply, the sound ripped from her lungs as her descent was abruptly halted. Her fingers clawed instinctively at the surface beneath her, gripping the fabric as though anchoring herself to reality itself. The carpet hovered in the open air, suspended effortlessly against the backdrop of the city lights, its edges fluttering gently as if stirred by an unseen wind.

For a moment, everything slowed.

The music behind them continued to pulse.

Laughter echoed across the rooftop.

Voices overlapped in careless conversation.

And yet, here—at the very edge of the world—something impossible had just occurred, unnoticed by all but two.

Axel's heart hammered violently against his chest, each beat heavy, uneven, as adrenaline surged through his veins like wildfire. His breath came sharp and unsteady as he leaned over the railing, reaching out without hesitation. His fingers closed firmly around Mira's arm, grounding her, anchoring her to something real, something solid.

"Got you," he said, though the words came out strained, almost lost beneath the chaos of his own racing pulse.

With a controlled but urgent motion, he pulled her upward, guiding her back over the railing and onto the rooftop. Her feet stumbled against the concrete as she regained her balance, but he didn't let go—not immediately. Not until he was certain she was steady. Not until he was certain she was safe.

Mira's breathing was uneven, sharp inhales and shaky exhales as the reality of what had just happened began to settle into her bones. Her hands remained gripping his arms, fingers curled tightly as though letting go might send her falling all over again. For a brief moment, she didn't speak. She didn't move.

She just stared.

Then, slowly, her expression shifted.

Shock gave way to something else.

Something sharper.

Something deeper.

"What the hell was that?" she whispered, her voice low but intense, her emerald eyes locking onto his with a focus that cut through everything else around them.

Axel swallowed.

The weight of the moment pressed down on him, heavy and unavoidable. His mind raced—not with confusion, but with choice. He could lie. He could laugh it off, dismiss it, pretend it had been some strange trick of light or adrenaline-fueled hallucination. He could build a wall in that moment and hide everything behind it.

But the way she looked at him—

That wasn't the gaze of someone who would accept a lie.

That wasn't the gaze of someone who hadn't seen exactly what had happened.

And more than that—

Something inside him told him not to.

A quiet certainty, rising from the same place that had driven him to act seconds ago.

Trust her.

"I… I can explain," he said, his voice quieter now, steadier, though still carrying the remnants of everything that had just unfolded.

Mira's gaze flickered briefly, shifting past him toward the edge of the rooftop, where the golden carpet still hovered for a fleeting moment longer before dissolving into particles of fading light, scattering into the night like embers carried away by the wind. Her eyes tracked the last remnants of it before returning to him, her expression unreadable but far from dismissive.

"You better," she said.

Around them, the party continued untouched. Music pulsed, voices overlapped, laughter rose and fell in waves. No one noticed. No one questioned. The world moved forward as if reality itself hadn't just fractured at the edges.

Axel glanced around briefly, his awareness sharpening, scanning for any sign of attention, any indication that someone else had seen.

Nothing.

Good.

"Come on," he said quietly, motioning toward the far end of the rooftop, where shadows gathered more densely and the noise faded just enough to allow for something resembling privacy.

Mira didn't hesitate.

She followed.

The corner they moved to was quieter, partially shielded by a low structure that housed rooftop equipment, its dull metallic surface absorbing the glow of the nearby lights. The sounds of the party dulled slightly, no longer overwhelming, but still present enough to mask their conversation from wandering ears.

Axel ran a hand through his hair, exhaling slowly as he tried to organize thoughts that didn't want to be neatly arranged.

"This is gonna sound insane," he began, his voice low, measured, "but… I'm not just some regular kid."

Mira raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms loosely, though her posture remained attentive, grounded. "No kidding," she replied dryly.

Despite everything, Axel let out a faint breath of something almost like amusement.

Then he continued.

"My father," he said, the words carrying a subtle weight as he spoke them, "before he died… he told me something. About who I am. About what I can do." He paused briefly, searching for the right way to explain something that didn't belong in ordinary language. "It's… power. Not learned. Not trained. Passed down. Through generations."

Mira didn't interrupt.

Didn't question.

She just listened.

"That," Axel continued, glancing briefly toward where the carpet had been, "was the first time I used it like that. No thinking. No control. Just… instinct."

Silence settled between them.

Not empty.

Not awkward.

But heavy.

Measured.

Mira studied him, her gaze steady, searching not for flaws in his story, but for truth within it.

Then—

She moved.

Slowly, deliberately, she reached up to the collar of her shirt, her fingers slipping beneath the fabric. For a brief moment, Axel watched, unsure of what she was doing—until she pulled something free.

A small cross.

It caught the light immediately, its surface gleaming faintly, not just reflecting the rooftop glow, but almost holding its own.

Axel's breath caught.

"You—"

"I'm the Holder of Amplification," Mira said, her voice quiet, but unwavering, carrying a certainty that left no room for doubt. "And if you're who I think you are…"

She paused, her eyes locking onto his with a clarity that mirrored his own realization.

"Then we were meant to meet."

Silence followed.

But this time—

It was different.

Not uncertain.

Not questioning.

But complete.

Everything Axel had felt since arriving—the pull, the instinct, the quiet certainty that had guided him without explanation—suddenly aligned into something undeniable.

This wasn't chance.

This wasn't coincidence.

This was purpose.

He exhaled slowly, the tension in his shoulders easing just enough for something else to take its place.

Understanding.

And then—

A faint grin formed on his lips, subtle but real.

"Well," he said, his voice lighter now, though the weight behind it remained, "guess we've got a lot to talk about."

Mira smirked, tucking the cross back beneath her shirt, her expression shifting into something sharper, more alive, as though the night itself had just become more interesting.

"Yeah," she said. "And I've got a feeling…"

Her gaze drifted briefly toward the skyline, toward the vast stretch of the world beyond the rooftop, beyond the city, beyond everything they had known before this moment.

"…this is only the beginning."

The music continued.

The night carried on.

But for Axel—

Everything had changed.

Because the search was over.

And the real journey—

Had just begun.
