Chapter 4 - world...part 2

Silence.

But this time—

I'll do better.

The words left me quietly.

he jests steered at me

My brother didn't respond immediately.

Instead—

He stood.

Slow.

Unhurried.

His chair slid back with a soft sound against the floor.

He turned, walking toward the cabinet behind him.

Every movement precise.

Familiar.

He opened it.

Reached inside.

Glass.

A bottle.

Dark.

He poured himself a drink.

The soft sound of liquid filling the glass broke the silence.

Then—

He picked up a second glass.

Paused.

Just for a second.

Before pouring again.

I watched.

Didn't speak.

Didn't move.

He turned back toward me.

Walked over.

And placed the glass in front of me.

"Drink."

Not an order.

Not quite.

I looked at the glass.

Then at him.

My fingers moved.

Slowly—

I picked up the glass and I took a small sip.

Bitter.

Warm.

It spread slowly.

Settling.

He watched me.

Then—

He took a sip of his own.

"You said you'll do better."

His voice was calm.

"But don't rush it."

A pause.

"Rushing gets you killed."

I leaned back slightly.

I don't rush.

"You did today."

The reply came instantly.

Then—

"You noticed the tracer."

Yes.

"You removed it cleanly."

Yes.

A slight nod from him.

Approval.

Subtle.

But there.

"Good."

He set his glass down.

"Then you're improving."

Not praise.

Not comfort.

Just fact.

Then—

His eyes sharpened slightly.

"But next time—"

"Notice sooner."

My grip on the glass tightened just a fraction.

"…Understood."

Silence.

Then—

He leaned back, more relaxed now.

Then he said to me,

"Did you read the document?"

I said: "No."

I reached for the documents on the table and started reading.

The first document I read.

The title was: "What is the world?"

~~~
what is a world??
A world is the manifestation of life. A world is the birthplace of civilizations —A sacred storehouse of every dream ever dreamed, And the fading echoes of all that was lost to time, The quiet promise that slipped away.
It is the only place where you journey, where you struggle… Where you build, and break, and begin again and where you finally come to rest in peace.
Yet shadows strangle that dying world, its memory devoured by time, its hope dissolved into mist. Swayed by silence, it drifts forgotten Through the ruins of all it once became.
A fragile refuge was carved Upon a poisoned shore marked in twilight, A fleeting sanctuary trembling on the edge of oblivion.
Now they journey toward the unknown exchange, Toward the silent grave where meaning erodes— Where their purpose is weighed by strangers, there worth mocked by the nameless, and every dream is bartered…
 —form your friend
The words settled heavily in the air.
My fingers tightened slightly on the page.
"…Promotion."
The word left me quietly.
But this time—
It didn't feel like one.
I lowered the document.
Placed it on the table.
Slowly.
"They're satisfied."
I said.
Flat.
But even as I said it—
I knew.
My brother didn't respond immediately.
He just watched me.
Carefully.
"…Read it again."
A pause.
"…Properly."
My eyes narrowed slightly.
But I didn't argue.
I picked up the document again.
Read the last lines.
"Where their purpose is weighed by strangers…"
"…every dream is bartered…"
"…From your friend."
Silence.
My fingers stilled.
"…This isn't approval."
I said.
Quiet.
Sharp.
My brother nodded once.
"…No."
A pause.
"…It's acknowledgment."
That made me look up.
"…Of what?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Then—
"Of our betrayal of the organisation"
Silence.
Cold.
Heavy.
My grip tightened slightly.
"For the solar system."
I spoke.
He didn't deny it.
"Yes."
The room fell into Silence.
and he spoke
"And now they know."
Heavy.
I leaned back slightly.
How?
My voice was low.
Controlled.
My brother didn't answer immediately
and he spoke.
"Because I stop the tractor when we collated the reward"
again, the room fell into Silence.
I leaned back slightly.
"…How?"
My voice was low.
Controlled.
For a moment—
he said nothing.
Then—
"Because I stopped the tracer."
My eyes narrowed slightly.
"When?"
"When we collected the reward."
Silence.
That landed harder than anything else.
You cut their signal
"Yes."
You let them think it was not working
"Yes."
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
"But they noticed."
"Eventually."
A pause.
then I spoke
They always do.
Silence.
Then—
he turned.
Toward the wall.
Touched the panel.
It flickered to life.
Light spread across the room.
Cold.
Sharp.
The wall dissolved—
becoming a display.
Space.
Endless.
And filled.
Thousands of ships.
Ours.
And filled.
Thousands of ships.
Ours.
My brother's voice was calm.
Steady.
"Full spread."
he commander all of the space ship
My eyes moved past them.
Searching.
Looking for it.
For the system.
For the stars.
For anything.
There was nothing.
No planets.
No orbit.
No debris.
No light.
Just—
empty space.
Clean.
Still.
Wrong.
My breath slowed.
My eyes narrowed.
No
The word left me before I could stop it.
I stepped forward slightly.
That's not possible.
Silence.
This is the location.
"Yes."
this is where it should be.
"Yes."
My voice dropped.
Colder now.
Sharper.
"…Then where is it?"
A pause.
My brother didn't answer.
Because he didn't need to.
I stared at the space again.
At the emptiness.
At the place where something should have been.
I saw it.
Not clearly.
Not at first.
Space… was breaking.
Not tearing.
Not shattering.
But folding inward.
Collapsing into itself.
Slow.
Silent.
Wrong.
The emptiness wasn't empty anymore.
It was sinking.
Caving in—like something unseen was pulling it inward.
My breath slowed.
That's not possible.
I spoke
The distortion deepened.
Space curved.
and
Compressed into a point that shouldn't exist.
And inside—
There was something.
Not light.
Not shadow.
Something else.
