The editor's name was Naveen Oberoi, and he had run Commerce India for six years out of a fourth-floor office on Nariman Point with a staff of eleven and a printing budget that forced him to choose, every fortnight, between a longer feature and a shorter one. The ninth letter, the one now sitting on his desk, was two pages instead of the usual one, and it ended with a sentence Oberoi had read perhaps a dozen times since it arrived: You publish quarterly results and call it journalism. I am asking you to publish the truth, and I do not believe you have the courage to go and find it.
He was fifty-one years old and had spent thirty of those years in newsrooms, and he did not, as a rule, allow an anonymous reader's insult to determine his editorial calendar. But numbers were not proof against a feeling, and the feeling — Oberoi understood this, because he shared a version of it himself, on the days when he was tired and the mail brought another letter — was that a country could produce eighty-one thousand new companies and still, somehow, belong to one family. That was the specific fear underneath the Concerned Citizen's anger, and underneath the anger of the readers who wrote shorter, calmer letters saying much the same thing, and underneath, Oberoi suspected, a meaningful fraction of the country that did not write letters at all but held the feeling privately, the way people held feelings about things too large to argue about at dinner.
He called his best reporter into his office on Wednesday morning.
The reporter's name was Ravi Malhotra. He was thirty-four, had covered industrial policy for Commerce India since 1973, had a economics degree from Delhi School of Economics that he rarely mentioned and a reporter's notebook that he filled at a rate his editor found faintly alarming, and he had, in six years at the paper, developed the specific reputation of a man who did not write the story his editor wanted written unless the facts happened to agree with it.
"I want you to go find out if it's true," Oberoi said, and slid the letter across the desk.
Malhotra read it standing up. "Find out if what's true. That one family controls the country?"
"Find out how much of the new economy exists because of them, and how much exists in spite of them, and how much exists without them ever having heard of it." Oberoi leaned back. "I don't want a defense. I don't want an attack. I want you to go to the places where things are actually being built and write down what you see. If it turns out the letter's right, we run that. If it turns out the letter's wrong, we run that instead. But I want it to be true either way, and right now I don't know which one it is, and neither do you."
"How long do I have?"
"Six weeks. Go everywhere. I'll clear the travel budget." Oberoi paused. "And Ravi — no interviews with them. Not the family, not the holding company, not the group's press office. If this story becomes about them, we've written the same story everyone else writes. I want the story about everyone else."
Malhotra had been a journalist long enough to recognize an assignment that was actually an argument his editor was having with himself, dressed as a reporting trip. He took it anyway, because the argument was one he wanted to have too.
"Six weeks is not very long for eleven cities," Malhotra said, doing the arithmetic out loud.
"It is not meant to be comfortable. If it were comfortable you would spend four days in each place being shown the polished version of the story by whoever answers the telephone first. I want you moving fast enough that you are talking to the third person in every town, not the first. The first person always has a prepared answer. The third person is usually still telling you the truth by accident, before they remember they are supposed to have an opinion."
Malhotra had heard variations of this instruction from Oberoi before, on smaller assignments, and had come, over six years, to trust it more than he trusted most of the formal methodology taught in the journalism courses he had briefly attended before deciding the newsroom taught faster. "And if what I find is exactly what the letter says? If I go to eleven cities and every single business I visit turns out to be downstream of the same institution in one way or another?"
Oberoi was quiet for a moment. "Then we publish that, and I will be the first person in this building to say I was wrong to doubt it, and we will have done something considerably more useful than what the last nine letters from Kanpur have managed to do alone, which is to make one angry man feel unheard while changing nothing at all. I am not sending you out to defend anyone, Ravi. I am sending you out because I have read every quarterly filing this magazine has published for six years and I genuinely do not know, at the level of an actual factory floor, whether the picture those filings paint is the whole economy or a very large photograph of one corner of it, blown up until it looks like the whole room."

Coimbatore

"We each put in a fixed amount every month," Harbhajan explained. Not through any government export promotion office, though I will say those offices have become considerably more useful in the last two years than they were when I started. "Bombay financed one machine," Gurmeet said again, as if the repetition mattered to him. "Herr Voss financed, indirectly, through his orders, everything that machine has produced since. I do not forget which relationship actually built this business."
Ludhiana, Malhotra wrote in the train back toward Delhi, was not a single story. It was several hundred workshops running several hundred separate experiments in how a small manufacturer in Punjab could finance its own transformation, and the experiments that worked kept running, and the ones that didn't closed, and none of it required a single point of control to function, because the actual mechanism — he was beginning to see this clearly now, four cities into a six-week assignment — was not a mechanism at all. If you write a story that says Sona dal exists because of Bombay, you will be writing a story that erases my father, and my cousins, and a cooperative bank manager named Deshpande who approved our loan against the specific written objection of his own regional office, and who I still visit every Diwali because without his stubbornness this company does not exist. Bombay gave us the last piece. The last piece is not the whole picture. That is what a market actually is, when it is working — thousands of people who have never met, will never meet, and do not need to meet, each making a private judgment about what a distant, unseen factory is worth, and the sum of all those private judgments becoming, somehow, without anyone directing it, a number on a board that the entire country trusts more than it trusts almost any single person's opinion, including, I would guess, the opinion of the man from Kanpur whose letter you have been carrying around in your coat pocket for six weeks."

The broker laughed. "You are not the first journalist Oberoi has sent down here this year with that particular expression on his face. I did not know the specific letter.
