Chapter 44 - Bro, what the fuck

The MHA building was in chaos.

Hunters were running through the corridors.

Weapons were being prepared.

Teams were being assembled.

And somewhere inside all that chaos...

Two people were talking quietly.

One of them was Yamato.

"You think he'll be coming?"

"I'm sure."

"But Yamato... the entire MHA is preparing to kill him. How can he possibly survive?"

The other person remained silent for a moment.

Then he smiled.

"I know that kid."

The first person looked confused.

"Oh yeah?"

"How?"

He looked toward the window.

"...Because I'm his sensei."

Meanwhile...

I was walking through the MHA corridors.

I didn't know where I was going.

I didn't care.

My mind was filled with questions.

The Siren.

The elders.

Yamato.

Raion Yubiwa.

And now...

The fact that the people I had trusted were trying to kill me.

I heard footsteps.

Hundreds of them.

I cracked my knuckles.

"Come on, baby."

The doors at the end of the corridor burst open.

An entire unit of hunters charged toward me.

"KYOREN HISACAGE!"

"You're coming with us!"

I smiled.

"No."

They attacked.

Fire.

Thunder.

Earth.

Water.

Techniques filled the hallway.

I moved between them.

One punch.

Another.

A kick.

A dodge.

One by one, the hunters fell.

Within seconds...

The entire unit was down.

Except one.

He was lying against the wall, trembling.

I grabbed him by his uniform and lifted him slightly.

"You're going to tell me everything."

He swallowed.

"I-I don't know anything!"

"Wrong answer."

I tightened my grip.

"Why is the MHA trying to kill me?"

"I..."

He looked terrified.

"Talk."

"Okay! Okay!"

He finally broke.

"We've been hiding something!"

"What?"

"The MHA..."

He hesitated.

"...doesn't only hunt monsters."

I frowned.

"Obviously. I already know you guys deal with humans too."

"No!"

He shook his head violently.

"You don't understand!"

"We've been killing them."

I froze.

"...What?"

"Humans."

His voice trembled.

"We've been killing humans along with the monsters."

The corridor suddenly felt silent.

"How many?"

"I don't know."

"How many?"

"I-I don't know the exact number!"

I stared at him.

"Then tell me how many people know."

He looked down.

"The people who knew..."

"...are dead."

My grip loosened.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Three months.

I'd been working for the MHA for three months.

Three months of missions.

Three months of following orders.

Three months of believing I was protecting people.

And all this time...

I had been working for a group that murdered innocent people.

"What the fuck..."

I whispered.

The hunter looked at me.

"Kyoren..."

I slowly released him.

Then I turned away.

I couldn't believe it.

The people I thought were protecting humanity...

Were doing the exact opposite.

Then I heard a noise behind me.

Click.

Click.

Click.

More hunters appeared at the other end of the corridor.

Another unit.

Dozens of them.

Weapons ready.

One of them shouted:

"KYOREN HISACAGE!"

"You are officially classified as a threat to the MHA!"

I looked at them.

A strange calm came over me.

"Three months..."

I muttered.

"Three months I spent killing monsters for you."

I slowly raised my fists.

"And you were killing humans too."

Nobody answered.

I looked at the hunters in front of me.

My eyes hardened.

"I think..."

I stepped forward.

"...you guys seriously deserve hell."

The hunters charged.

And this time...

I didn't hesitate.
