Chapter 26 - Something in the blood

"Well," I said, scratching my head, "I used that word in the Prison Maze sometimes."

Everyone stared at me.

"Sometimes?" Yamato repeated.

"Only on the bigger monsters."

"The really strong ones."

Yamato pointed at the unconscious monsters lying on the floor.

"And you're telling me you have no idea how you did that?!"

I shrugged.

"I really don't."

Yamato looked ready to pull his hair out.

Before he could say anything, the assistant raised a hand.

"Mr. Yamato... I think I know what that word means."

The room fell silent.

"What?" Yamato asked.

The assistant adjusted his glasses.

"I think it means... 'Protect Blood.'"

Everyone blinked.

"How do you know that?" I asked.

"I heard something similar in an Indian movie called Thamma."

The doctor crossed his arms.

"Protect Blood?"

He frowned.

"That doesn't make any sense."

"Maybe their blood is special?" I suggested.

The doctor immediately pointed at me.

"Please shut up."

"Woah."

I raised both hands.

"You don't have to be so grumpy."

To my surprise, Yamato nodded.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"I think Kyoren might actually be right."

The doctor froze.

"Excuse me?"

"If that command somehow affects monsters..."

Yamato looked toward the unconscious creatures.

"...then maybe the answer really is in their blood."

The assistant immediately took a blood sample from one of the monsters.

Then he rushed over to a microscope.

The room became quiet.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Nobody spoke.

The assistant's expression slowly changed.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then complete disbelief.

"Guys..."

His voice sounded shaky.

"You need to see this."

Yamato stood up immediately.

"What is it?"

The assistant moved aside.

"Just look."

One by one, we peered into the microscope.

I looked first.

At first, I didn't understand what I was seeing.

Yamato pushed me aside and looked.

His jaw dropped.

The doctor grabbed the microscope next.

A few seconds later, he nearly fell backward.

"What?!"

Nobody could believe it.

Because mixed in with the monster's blood...

there was something that shouldn't have existed.
