Chapter 14 - 13

The wind did not calm after the creature vanished, instead it carried a subtle weight, like a warning that had yet to reveal its true meaning, and standing in the quiet aftermath, Ichigo Kurosaki slowly lowered his sword, his eyes still fixed on Zed as if trying to understand something that refused to be understood.

"…That thing," Ichigo said, his voice low, "it wasn't a Hollow, wasn't an Arrancar… and it wasn't even stable."

Zed nodded faintly. "…It was a byproduct."

Rukia's gaze sharpened. "…A byproduct of what?"

Zed looked up at the sky again. "…Of me being here."

Silence followed.

Not disbelief.

Not denial.

Just a quiet realization settling in.

Ichigo exhaled slowly. "…So the longer you stay… the worse it gets."

Zed didn't answer directly.

Because he didn't need to.

The ground trembled again.

Stronger this time.

Deeper.

As if something beneath the surface of reality itself had begun to shift.

Rukia reacted instantly. "…Again?!"

Ichigo raised his sword. "…No… this feels different."

Zed's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…It's not random anymore."

The air tightened.

Not chaotic.

Not unstable.

But controlled.

Deliberate.

And then—

The space in front of them folded.

Not torn.

Not broken.

Folded.

Like a page being turned.

And from that fold—

A figure stepped out.

Tall.

Calm.

Composed.

Dressed in black.

His presence—

Heavy.

Not overwhelming.

But absolute.

Byakuya Kuchiki

The moment he appeared—

The atmosphere changed.

Not violently.

But completely.

Rukia's eyes widened instantly. "…Brother…"

Ichigo's expression hardened. "…Another captain…"

Byakuya's gaze moved once, briefly acknowledging Rukia, then shifted to Ichigo, and finally—

Stopped on Zed.

Silence stretched.

"…So you are the source of the disturbance," Byakuya said calmly.

Zed met his gaze without hesitation. "…I am part of it."

Byakuya's eyes narrowed slightly. "…Your presence has disrupted the balance of Soul Society, caused irregular manifestations, and interfered with the flow of reiryoku itself."

A pause.

"…That cannot be permitted."

Ichigo stepped forward immediately. "Oi, hold on—"

Byakuya didn't look at him.

"…Stand aside."

Ichigo's grip tightened. "…No."

For a moment—

Neither moved.

Zed watched quietly.

"…You don't need to fight him," he said.

Ichigo glanced at him. "…And let him attack you?"

Zed's expression didn't change. "…It won't matter."

Byakuya's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…Arrogance," he said.

In the next instant—

Petals filled the air.

Senbonzakura.

The blade had already been released.

Thousands of shimmering fragments surrounded the battlefield, each one carrying enough cutting power to slice through steel effortlessly, forming a storm that closed in from all directions.

Ichigo's eyes widened. "…Bankai already?!"

Rukia stepped back. "…He's not holding back…"

Zed remained still.

The petals reached him.

And then—

Stopped.

Not blocked.

Not deflected.

Stopped.

As if an invisible boundary had denied their existence.

Byakuya's eyes narrowed further.

"…I see."

The petals moved again.

Faster.

Sharper.

More concentrated.

They converged from all directions at once, compressing into a single point, enough force to erase anything caught within.

Zed raised his hand.

"…You're using the system efficiently," he said calmly.

His fingers moved slightly.

The petals—

Dispersed.

Not pushed away.

Not destroyed.

But disconnected.

Their structure breaking apart as if the control holding them together had been severed.

Byakuya's expression changed.

Just slightly.

"…You interfered with my Bankai."

Zed lowered his hand.

"…No," he replied, "I interfered with the rules it follows."

Silence.

Ichigo stared at the scene. "…He just… stopped Senbonzakura…"

Rukia's voice was barely audible. "…Even captains shouldn't be able to do that…"

Byakuya stepped forward.

Slow.

Measured.

"…Then I will remove the need for rules," he said.

His spiritual pressure rose.

Not wildly.

But deeply.

The petals around him changed, becoming heavier, more condensed, their presence sharper than before.

Zed watched.

"…You're adapting."

Byakuya didn't deny it.

"…It is necessary."

He moved.

Faster than before.

His blade appeared directly in front of Zed, striking with precise force, aiming not for overwhelming destruction, but for a clean, decisive cut.

Zed shifted slightly.

The blade missed.

Barely.

Byakuya followed immediately, his movements flawless, each strike calculated, each step controlled, pushing forward without hesitation.

For a brief moment—

It looked like a real fight.

Zed moved.

But minimally.

Each step perfectly timed, each motion just enough to avoid the attack, no wasted energy, no unnecessary movement.

Byakuya's eyes sharpened.

"…You are not countering."

Zed replied calmly. "…I don't need to."

Byakuya's next strike came faster.

Sharper.

Closer.

And this time—

Zed reached out.

Their blades didn't clash.

Zed's hand touched the flat of Byakuya's sword.

And in that instant—

Everything stopped.

Byakuya felt it immediately.

His control—

Faltered.

For the first time—

His Bankai's flow broke.

The petals around them froze mid-air, their movement halted as if something had interrupted the very command that guided them.

"…What…" Byakuya said quietly.

Zed looked at him.

"…You're strong," he said, "but still within the system."

Byakuya pulled back instantly, creating distance, his expression no longer calm, but focused, analyzing, recalculating.

"…You disrupt the foundation of techniques," he said.

Zed didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

Byakuya lowered his blade slightly.

"…I understand."

Ichigo blinked. "…Huh?"

Byakuya's gaze remained on Zed.

"…You are not an enemy that can be defeated by conventional means."

Zed remained silent.

Byakuya turned slightly.

"…This matter exceeds captain-level authority."

Rukia's eyes widened. "…Brother…?"

Byakuya looked back once more.

"…You will be dealt with by a higher order."

And then—

He vanished.

The petals disappeared.

The pressure lifted.

Silence returned once again.

Ichigo exhaled slowly. "…Higher order…? Don't tell me…"

Zed looked at the sky.

Calm.

Unchanged.

"…It's escalating," he said.

The wind rose again.

But now—

It carried something inevitable.

Because the world—

Was no longer just reacting.

It was preparing.
