~Salvatore's POV
I stayed still and Gianna's breathing got sharper, and she pushed her chair back slightly like she was getting more frustrated.
"I am marrying for love," she said loudly now. "And you cannot even ask me if I love someone? You just decide everything like that?"
I looked at her for a moment, then answered without raising my voice.
"It does not matter if you like someone or not," I said. "You will do what I say."
That made her freeze for half a second. The chair scraped slightly against the floor, and all attention shifted to her again.
"No," she said firmly, shaking her head. "I am not doing that."
And she did not stay after that. She stood there for a moment, breathing hard, then without saying another word, she turned and walked out of the dining room. No one spoke for a while.
Then my mother turned to me slowly.
"Why do you want to marry her off like that?" she asked, her voice low but clearly not happy. "She is still young."
I looked at her properly.
