Chapter 56 - 56. The New King

Chapter 56: The New King – 2005–2006

King Alexander II was fifty‑five years old when he ascended the throne. He had spent decades preparing: studying economics at Cambridge, serving as ambassador to the United Nations, and overseeing the Future Trust's investments. He was calm, methodical, and deeply committed to his grandfather's vision.

His first act was to appoint a new cabinet. Dr. Anna Fischer became Prime Minister, the first woman to hold the office. Cornelis van der Berg VII remained as central bank governor. General Pieter van der Berg stayed as defense minister. Ambassador Johanna van der Heijden retired, replaced by Hendrik van Aerssen Jr. , the son of the former foreign minister.

Alexander also reached out to the younger generation. He appointed Lucas van der Heijden (founder of StreamSphere) as an advisor on technology policy. He invited Sophie van der Heijden (the activist) to serve on a civil liberties commission. He promoted Dr. Sarah van Dijk to lead the National AI Institute.

In July 2005, terrorists struck London. Four bombs exploded on the city's transport network, killing fifty‑two people. Alexander immediately offered Zeelandia's condolences and assistance.

"We stand with the United Kingdom," he said in a statement. "Terrorism will never defeat democracy."

Zeelandian intelligence agencies, led by Colonel Pieter van Rijn (now semi‑retired but still advising), shared information with British authorities. The cooperation helped prevent further attacks.

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The American response was widely criticized as slow and inadequate. Alexander offered Zeelandia's help. Within days, Zeelandian ships carrying supplies, medical teams, and engineers arrived in the Gulf Coast.

President George W. Bush thanked Alexander personally. "Your nation's generosity is unmatched," he said.

Alexander replied, "We are neighbors in the family of nations. Neighbors help each other."

The new king also focused on domestic issues. He pushed for increased investment in renewable energy, expanded broadband access to rural areas, and launched a national service program for young people.

In January 2006, Alexander visited India for the Republic Day celebrations. He met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed trade, technology, and climate change. The two leaders signed a comprehensive partnership agreement.

"Zeelandia and India are natural allies," Alexander said. "We are both democracies, both diverse, both committed to peace and prosperity."

Singh replied, "Your grandfather was a great friend of India. You are following in his footsteps."

Back in Koningstad, Alexander faced his first political crisis. The merchant guild, led by Jacob van Rijn's grandson, Hendrik van Rijn, demanded tax cuts and deregulation. "The state is too large," van Rijn argued in parliament. "Let the private sector lead."

Alexander responded in a televised address. "My grandfather believed that the state must be strong to protect the weak. I share that belief. We will cut taxes where it makes sense, but we will not abandon our responsibilities."

The debate continued for months, but Alexander's popularity remained high. Zeelandia was at peace, prosperous, and respected. The new king had passed his first test.
